Re: Introduce Yourself!

Hi. I'm Norm from a small town in New Hampshire. I bought a Nook a couple of years ago mainly because my apartment was getting a little cluttered with all my books laying around. Just got the Nook tablet a couple of weeks ago and so far so good. I mainly read fantasy with the occasional non-fiction purchase about World War I or II. I didn't even know until today that these boards existed. What a great find.

Hello,

I'm new to the forum (but have read many posts for years). Why have I decided to come here now? Well previously I felt uncomfortable as I was a new unknown author whose books were put out by small pressess (AMI and Ridan - which was owned by my wife). My Riyria Revelations series has now been picked up by Orbit and I feel more like "a real boy". So I think it's okay for me to come out and play nowadays.

I fell in love with fantasy, as many have, because of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. I tend to like traditional fantasy and love books with humor (such as Good Omens). I'm pleased to find so many people here talking about fantasy that they love.

Re: Introduce Yourself!

Hi I'm Michelle and I just received a nook for Christmas! So far so good, I was pleased to find that the older books are so reasonably priced. At last I no longer have to give books away just to find living space in my house! We only had about 6-7 thousand paperbacks when we last moved (those were just the keepers, not the read-once onlies). Alas they are doomd to live out their papyral lives in storage. But now there is hope! Instead of searching (and searching...and searching...) I can keep a version on my Nook for pennies on the storage prices!

Really, we've been collecting Science Fiction books for...I'll say forty years to be fair. Our collection starts from the mid-nineteenth century and continues to the present. For those who didn't realize, yes, SciFi started in the nineteenth century right along with the novel as a genre.

Fantasy has always been with us.

I am an MFA student and I am currently working on a third novel..well, a couple of them, actually.

Yes, I am a Science-Fiction Geek, but my pet was NOT named in honor of LOTR. He was named in honor of Star Trek, the first one, not the imitations, and so was his brother.

Re: Introduce Yourself!

Hello, I just joined. I like to read more of the fantasy than science fiction. My favorite authors include: Anne McCaffrey and her son Todd. I also like Mercedes Lackey. There are others too. I like to read other genres also but sci/fi fantasy is my first love.

Re: Introduce Yourself!

Hello I am a 31 year old, who just moved to Texas from Missouri with my husband and two kids. I love reading fantasy romance books but I also like romance and mystery books too. My favorite series are the Anita Blake, Meredith Gentry, Sookie Stackhouse, Mercy Thompson, and Stephanie Plum.

I have read many posts about different series so this year I am expanding my reading; I have just started reading The Blood Books by Tanya Huff and I love it. After this book I am going to try the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. So any suggestions for any good series would be appreciated.

Hey Bound2review

Come on over to the Paranormal & Urban Fantasy board. A lot of people there read the same kind of books as you do.

If you're looking for supernatural books that combine investigative/action plots with a bit of romance, I suggest that you check out the Rachel Morgan series which starts with Dead Witch Walking (Rachel Morgan Series #1); the Greywalker series books which starts with Greywalker (Greywalker Series #1) ; the October Daye series by Seanan McGuire which starts with Rosemary and Rue (October Daye Series #1); the Sabina Kane series that begins with Red-Headed Stepchild (Sabina Kane Series #1); the Jane True series which begins with Tempest Rising (Jane True Series #1); the Makers Song books which begin with A Rush of Wings (Maker's Song Series #1); the Jane Yellowrock books that begin with Skinwalker (Jane Yellowrock Series #1); the Stormwalker books that begin with Shadow Walker (Stormwalker Series #3); and the Bloodhound Files books that begin with Dying Bites (Bloodhound Files Series #1).

Note, the books/series I've listed are just that ones that come immediately to mind right now. There are many more out there which I've read and enjoyed.

P.S.

Here are some new/newer series openers that seemingly fit your parameters:

Kindling the Moon

The Shadow Reader

Blood Bound

Under Wraps

Re: Introduce Yourself!

Been around here awhile, but really never took the time to post an intro. So here goes.

I'll be 42 (the magic number!) next month. Love all types of books and, in the past have worked for both Borders and B&N for a cumulative total of over 10 years.

Big fan of sci-fi and fantasy, including Tolkien, Steven Brust, Ursula LeGuin, Roger Zelazney, Harlan Ellison, and Frank Herbert. Also a fan of shared world anthologies that seemed all the rage back in the 80s: Thieves World, Wild Cards, etc. Biggest favorites (by # of books): Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, and Michael Moorcock.

On the media side, fan of: Doctor Who, Babylon 5, Smallville, LotR movies, Heroes, Homicide, The Tomorrow People, Red Dwarf, Buffy.

I now make my living as a professional writer, mostly at my day job which involves online content and search engine marketing. Working on a novel or two, the primary one, oddly enough, being a mystery. Go figure.

Have lived many different places: New Jersey, Virginia, upstate New York, southern California, Pennsylvania (both east & west), and North Carolina.

Re: Introduce Yourself!

I have read Science Fiction and some Fantasy stuff.  Stopped reading it for quite a few years and now have picked up a few things for Nook.  But I read everything:  straight fiction, classics, westerns, sci-fi, mysteries.  Don't particularly like Horror stuff or romance.  I rotate around what I read.  I'll read a mystery then a western, then a contemporary fiction, then a non fiction.  I like a bit of everything.

In the past I have read the Burroughs and RE Howard stuff.  OK for pulp fiction.  Very readable. Did the whole Tolkein thing.  Liked the Hobbit pretty well but struggled through the trilogy.  It got too long for me, found myself skimming.

When I read Science Fiction I like the straight stuff.  Heinlein, Anderson, Asimov, those kinds of authors.  Any new author suggestions are welcome.

Welcome HoosierJoe,

Hope you enjoy your time here on the Fantasy and Sci Fi board. :smileyhappy: And hope you get to check out all the other genre boards you read as well.  Sounds like you really enjoy a lot. :smileyhappy:

Look forward to seeing you around the boards.

Re: Introduce Yourself!

[ Edited ]

Hi there. My name is Pavel. Sci Fi is definitely my favorite of the fiction genres. I've been reading it ever since I got my hands on Soviet Science Fiction Collection back in second grade (someone really should translate more of that stuff into English). Though I read (and otherwise absorbed) a lot of sci fi over the years, several things crystallized lately as the unquestionable favorites: Author: Philip K Dick.; Movie: The Matrix; TV Show: Battlestar Galactica. Book (oddly): The Illuminatus! by R.A. Wilson. Just to clarify, there is a LOT of sci fi I consider great, even brilliant, but these are the pillars in my head no one managed to approach.

As a p.s. I didn't see any board rules as to self-promotion, so I'll just mention my book Project Antichrist. It's available for Nook, if anybody wanted to check it out. I think it's sci fi.

Cheers,

Pavel

And "you think" your novel is SF? :smileyindifferent:

I definitely do. But someone might read it and say, "That's actually an adventure novel set in the future," or "Fantasy," or "Action" or who knows what. And that's OK. I wouldn't want to impose my opinion on strangers :smileywink:

One thing you might want to do, Pavel, if you want to promote your book, is post a link to it, say like this:

Project Antichrist

Oh, and by the way, welcome.

Re: Introduce Yourself!

Actually I have been around for quite a while but only now got time to introduce myself. I have been reading and writing SF/F for many years. My Children of The Dragon vampire series which is epic science fiction, myth and history, romance, tragedy and triumph; linked together by the theme of the vampire as hero. I have 8 books out on Barnes & Noble; just search my author name for a complete list. They are also published on Nook. I also write nonfiction on related subjects.

Some of my influences include Fred Saberhagen, Isaac Asimov, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Chelsea Q Yarbro, PN Elrod, and others. I am also a fan of film and television and write in a cinematic style. My latest to come out is Written in Blood

I hope you find my books worth the read. Thanks.
