Looking for something along the lines of Foundation Series

[ Edited ]

Looking for Series along the lines of Space & Empires kind of thing. Old or New? Finished the Fondation Series, And loved fantasy world of "Wheel of Time" by robert jordan.

Something now Scifi with intricate plots, histories with strong and surprising characters.

Ask here as can't seem to find a way to really search a plug-in database where you can plug in themes and genre and get recomedations. Seems all kind of labor intensive to find specific themes within a genre.

Your suggestions greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Try David Weber's Honor Harrington series and related novels in the same universe. His Prince Roger tetralogy (March Upcountry, March to the Sea, March to Space, We Few) is very good too. These don't really have empires but do have good strong characters and intricate plots: Piers Anthony's "Bio of a Space Tyrant" Gordon Dickson's Dorsai series Jerry Pournelle's Janissaries series and Warworld series
Currently reading: Destiny of the Republic, Speaker for the Dead, Flag in Exile

This may sound a bit out of left field but I think I have the perfect series – it's Ken Schole's Psalms of Isaak series (Lamentation, Canticle, Antiphon, et. al.).  This just may be my all-time favorite series – it begins as epic fantasy but as the grand scale storyline unfolds, you begin to realize that – hey – this just may be apocalyptic fiction! It's awesome. Here is a link to a blog I wrote about the first few releases:

Re: Looking for something along the lines of Foundation Series

How about Sharon Lee & Steve Miller's Liaden novels.  The first four in order of publication are: Agent of Change, Conflict of Honors, Carpe Diem, Plan B.  These are Space Opera and I've really enjoyed the ones I've read.  Somehow I stopped looking for new ones and now I have a few I need to pick up.
