Mistborn 2: The Well of Ascension

[ Edited ]

I have not even finished the first book of the series but I know some of you have moved on to the second book. We won't be starting our discussion of this one until April 26 but I thought those of you who have moved on might be interested in Sanderson's commentaries on this book and his alternate endings. I'm posing this link virtually sight unseen because I don't want to spoil any surprises in the first book.

If you are still reading the first book beware SPOILERS AHEAD::

Great book. I like them when they are full of surprises. I am up to Chapter 21 which seems like an important chapter because we get some information that fills out some things in Kelsier's past (while adding a few more puzzles about Mare) plus we start to discover that the evil Lord Ruler, who is god-like and imortal, may be just a regular nice guy and "beloved leader"!

Okay, I am around page 200.  I am really liking the book.  It is pretty attention holding.  I keep taking notes and have ideas already on a few people, things, and Lord Ruler.  I can't wait for the discussion.  I think I am running out of paper in my house from the notes.  LOL!!

Got to keep reading...

I have not read Elantris yet.  Mistborn is actually the first one by Brandon I am reading.  I do think after this series Elantris and War, ummm (I am drawing a complete blank sorry), but anyway both will be added to the list to purchase.  I just have to many books and not enough time...  What to do, what to read...

Yes, definitely but down the line a bit. I'm getting hopelessly behind! In fact I was going to ask the Misborn thread if they wouldn't mind extending the discussion for Mistborn 1: The Final Empire for two weeks istead of the original one. I think I can get it finished before or shortly after the 19th but there is no way I'm going to get Mistborn 2: The Well of Ascension read by the 26th. But I don't want to hold the group up if everyone else is caught up and ready to start. So if I'm the only one, then let's stay with the schedule. I know a lot of you are anxious to get to The Hero of Ages.

Carmen you are sure buying up a storm! I haven't finished One Second After yet either (about halfway through it) so so I should be fresh for that discussion when you get to it on that thread. And as far as The Children of Hurin, I would like to do that one too but lets save that for June, our Tolkien rediscovered month. Maybe we can do Elantris then too. As for Gaiman's The Graveyard, I have that on audio so I can pick that up for my "ear only" free time after I finish listening to One Second After. Good grief! How do you do it!

Oh my!!!  I am having a hard time keeping up.  Whew (wiping sweat from my brow).  I am still working on Mistborn.  I am hoping to be done with it by the 19th or shortly after.  I am glad to hear Nadine asking to move the 2nd book.  I was starting to worry about getting it done in time for the second discussion.  Then there is the 3rd book.  Oh My!!  I am okay with moving the books back.

I have a few books I would like to read in May and June of what Paul picked out too.  And I have a few books from April I would like to read too.

I would love to read Elantris also.  But if we could wait just a little bit?  That would be great for me to try to get caught up just a little.

I just don't know what to do....  I am.. I am..

I am glad I started visiting the bookclubs!!  I am excited to have so many books to read.  (Just would like more time to read though.)

Maybe we should be realistic here. We all have many books to read and threads of discussions we want to participate in. I don't think any of us are in a rush. How about a more spread out schedule for the Mistborn series so we can fit in other book discussions and have time to read these.

Start Mistborn #1: The Final Empire - April 19.

Start Mistborn #2: The Well of Ascension - May 10

Start Mistborn #3: The Hero of Ages - May 31

This will also give Toni more time to get them from the library and Brad more time to perfect his masterpiece doodles.

Re: Mistborn Schedule:

I loved Elantris, by the way, guys, and enjoyed it just as much if not more than Mistborn. It may have been because Elantris was Sanderson's debut and I was just surprised and overwhelmed by his storytelling and world-building mastery.

This has nothing to do with Mistborn but the Publishers Weekly review for

Warbreaker was just released this morning and – wow – it got an amazing review (although the review said that Warbreaker was a standalone novel and I thought it was the first installment of a new series...) Either way, it's definitely going to be our #1 title for July so hopefully we can have a discussion a la Scholes' Lamentations this summer...

Paul

Warbreaker Brandon Sanderson. Tor, $27.95 (592p) ISBN 978-0-7653-2030-8

Epic fantasy heavyweight Sanderson (the Mistborn series) pens a powerful stand-alone tale of unpredictable loyalties, dark intrigue and dangerous magic. To keep a treaty made long ago, the king of Idris must send his daughter to marry Susebron, the God King of Hallandren. Loath to part with his eldest daughter, Vivenna, King Dedelin instead sends his youngest daughter, tomboyish 17-year-old Siri, who struggles to make sense of the schemers and spies in Susebron's court. Hoping to rescue her sister, Vivenna joins a group of Idrian operatives with questionable motives. As Vivenna comes to terms with her magical abilities, resurrected hero Lightsong questions the role of the undead Returned Gods, who command Hallandren's mighty army of zombie soldiers. Sanderson melds complex, believable characters, a marvelous world and thoughtful, ironic humor into an extraordinary and highly entertaining story. (June)

Re: Mistborn Schedule:

I don't know how this guy does it! Warbreaker to be released in June and then the last installment (Part 1) of the Wheel of Time, The Gathering Storm in November!
OK, how about if we pick up Elantris after we finish Mistborn #3: The Hero of Ages the first part of June, and then Warbreaker (HTML online version) as an official discussion in July.
Now if you want to get started with Warbreaker before it is published, Brandon Sanderson has put the whole thing online. However, read his introductory notes first.
This guy deserves a lot of support so I will buy the hard copy book when it comes out. Actually the cost of the paper, ink and binders to put the freebee in exceeds the cost of the actual book! And that isn't even considering the shelf space. The book is 608 pages!

I think it would be a wonderful discussion.  Glad to hear it will be in July.  It is officially on my calander.  I read one book so far and if the rest are that way, from what I hear they are., I will definitely be there.

I am very into doing the whole series together then to the next.
