WOW. This sounds amazing, Deb!
Overview
White Horse is the first book in an absolutely unique debut trilogy—a post-apocalyptic thriller chronicling one woman’s quest to nurture those she holds dear against the backdrop of a shocking, new world.Thirty-year-old Zoe wants to go back to college. That’s why she cleans cages and floors at GeneTech. If she can keep her head down, do her job, and avoid naming the mice she’ll be fine. Her life is calm, maybe even boring, until the end of the world when the President of the United States announces that humans are no longer a viable species.
Zoe starts running the moment she realizes everyone she loves is gone. Her boyfriend Nick, fearing he’s contracted...
Paul, let's just say that it will take a lot for this not to end up on my best of 2012 list and it's only February.
in my review I called it McCarthy's The Road on the steroids of hope.

Last night I finished a truly atmospheric and captivating historical mystery/thriller/horror fantasy entitled
The Edinburgh Dead. The overall pace in the first part of the book is leisurely with an attention to detail that I have rarely found in a fantasy book. But descriptions alone did not sustain my interest. Rather, the deeply sympathetic main character, Adam Quire, succeeded at drawing me into the narrative. Quire is a grizzled veteran of the Napoleonic wars who found new life within the parameters of his job as an officer in the newly created Edinburgh police. I was attracted to his strengths and faults, but, most of all, I sympathized with his insistence on brining justice to a presumably indigent man found savagely murdered in a slum neighborhood of Edinburgh.
The book starts with Quire's investigation of aforesaid murder which leads him to become suspicious of an upper-class gentleman named John Ruthven. Slowly the mystery becomes bizarre and leads to confrontations with men and giant dogs who do not bleed and feel no pain. Quire's career and life are targeted, and he reverts to a resourceful and efficient killer/survivor.
The gritty murder investigation evolves into a thrilling conflict enhanced by an ominous atmosphere and superb horror. On rare occasions the prose becomes a bit too refined, but as a whole the narrative flows effortlessly. The pace gradually increases; and, in the last third of the book, the story has wings. Note, the secondary characters are not really developed in the story. IMO, it's a minor flaw because Quire's character is strong/vibrant enough to carry the narrative.
I recommend this book to all lovers of historical fantasy and to anyone looking for an excellent blend of hard-boiled mystery, fantasy thriller and gothic horror.

I have never read J. R. R. Tolkien at all, and I felt some regret in not having read Lord of the Rings before seeing the movies. So in light of the fact that The Hobbit is coming to theatres next Christmas, I am reading The Hobbit.

I am currently reading The King's Bastard by Rowena Cory Daniells. Kind of a tough slog, but only 100 pages or so to go!

Finally it was my turn at the library for:
And I'm find it tough to put down to...work, sleep, eat, well---just about anything. It's been awhile since I found a book so obsessively good/awesome.

Almost finished with the thousand page tomb REAMDE ( no that's not a typo) Not really science fiction, but not main stream, it's whatever you call the stuff that Neal Stephenson writes. Not very realistic, but thought provoking and certainly a page turner. Stephenson takes the modern world and through a few interesting ideas makes you totally engrossed from beginning to end. Keeps you on the edge of your seat for almost all 1000 pages.
