You're a producer and money doesn't matter...

With the advances in SFX & CGI visual effects, we're quickly approaching a point (if we're not already there) where you're only limited by imagination and budget. Between movies and TV outlets (especially cable) sc-fi/fantasy is becoming, conceptually, something that more studios/networks are willing to take a risk on. So, let's take budget out of the formula for a second.

With that as a given, what book/series would you most like to see translated to the large and/or small screen?

With GoT making grittier fantasy popular for TV audiences, I think someone should adapt the Thieves' World concept for TV. As far as movies, I think the Pern books would be interesting.

Would like to see Robert Jordans "Wheel of Time" series or Terry Goodkinds "Sword of Truth" series. And R. A. Salvadore's Dark Elf series would be fun.

That is if it was done by serious producers and not like drive-thru $1 menu Syfy channel that is :smileysurprised:

Re: You're a producer and money doesn't matter...

I agree that SyFy's movies are TERRIBLE!!!  But they do have some good series, and their recent Peter Pan miniseries was great.

Once he's done with Tolkien, I would love to see Peter Jackson tackle the Shannara series, starting with the first trilogy, like he did with LoTR.  Of course, that's only MHO, as he may be sick of it by then and want to do something different.  I realize that Shannara is very similar to Tolkien, but fans of the genre could be hungry for more, and there is only limited Tolkien left after the Hobbit is done.  If the first trilogy is a success, there are plenty more Shannara books.

I think that Pern could make a great TV series.

I would like to see "The Dragonriders of Pern", the Ringworld series, The Mote in God's Eye, Footfall, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (no more Verhoeven treatments please) and the Honor Harrington series done.

I agree!

I'd say Pern, Moorcock's Elric, and Salvatore's Drizzt. All three of these have the potential to be just mind blowing!

Oh, wow! Where to begin? ...

- "The Riftwar Saga" series by Raymond E Feist

- "The Heechee Saga" series by Frederik Pohl

- "The Ringworkd Series" by Larry Niven

- "The Giants Series" by James P Hogan

- "The Xanth series" by Piers Anthony (or maybe just the first 12 books)

- "The Foundation Series" by Isaac Asimov

And then someone needs to turn "Battlefield Earth" into an epic mini-series instead of the movie abomination that it was. And then we can start in on PTerry's "Discworld" :smileyhappy:

I would LOVE to see Feist's Midkemia novels on the big screen! There are so many storylines, you could make a long series out of it!

The first Mistborn book could make a truly superb movie if you had the budget to do the setting and special effects right. I believe Paloppa Pictures LLC actually optioned the rights on it, but (a) who knows if that will ever result in a movie, and (b) despite the hopeful commentary in the thread-starter, scifi budgets can still be very large if you really want to get everything carefully done (there was a little movie called Avatar not so long ago...)

Just finished Sanderson's The Alloy of Law, and I think it has the potential to be a blockbuster movie.

I would agree Ringworld seems an obvious choice. Avatar is half way to Dragonriders, so if cost is no object it would seem doable. Young people fuel movies and I think Dragonriders would appeal, dragons, romance, potential for humor and snappy dialogue in a screenplay is high.

I also think Rob Thurman brothers series because of the reliance on dialogue could be adapted easily. Sort of like supernatural would appeal to YA. Action for the guys, sexy guys for gals and humorous dialogue and characters for both.

It occurred to me that I neglected to mention A Wrinkle in Time, the Dorsai series, the first six books of Xanth, and Heinlein's Star Beast and Between Planets (as long as Verhoeven isn't directing).

A Wrinkle in Time was done (TV movie I think) with hardly any special effects.  I thought the adaptation was spotty but the girl in the lead role was quite good.

Verhoeven.  <spits>
As soon as I achieve minor godhood (I'm taking night classes) I will resurrect Mr. Heinlein and let him punch Verhoeven right in the pie-hole (more than once if he so desires).

Re: You're a producer and money doesn't matter...

I'd remake Relic (by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child) into the propper terror flick it should be.  Actually, maybe I wouldn't.  I think if it's done right, you wouldn't need hardly any special effects, as it would be much scarier if you barely catch glimpses of the creature while it's running in the shadows.

Perhaps a better choice would be the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy (The Dragonbone Chair, The Stone of Farewell and To Green Angel Tower) by Tad Williams.  With music by Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Mark Knopfler.

I'd like to see at least one Pip and Flinx movie just to see how they'd do Pip, the Thranx and the AAnns.

Neuromancer seems like an obvious choice.

Or maybe hire Coen brothers to make American Gods?

But really, I just want to reissue Matrix 2 and 3 and make them right.

Still wondering how they're going to screw up the bathroom fight scene in order to get it past the censors. No way it's going to get onto the big screen in 'as written' condition.

I'll believe it when I see it in theaters.  I've been teased too many times before.

+1 kamas  They've claimed a movie so many times.

I knew one was supposed to be on its way next year, and the cast seems to be pretty well chosen, but I'll believe it when I'm sitting in a cushy chair with some popcorn and a Coke.
