Lovely review TWJ, so glad you liked Bereft, it really touched me in ways that so few books do, it won't be a forgotten tomb on a shelf.

Not sure if this is a spoiler, but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the relationship between Sadie and Quinn. Is it brother/sisterly? Is it parent/child? Or, is it something a little bit incestuous?

I felt that it was a bit parent/child but also that she filled the empty space and became his little sister again and he, her brother. The thing that concerned me was their "spooning" in the bed. Was that simply offering each other emotional comfort, like a parent and a child or was it more? When they go off, do they go off and become brother and sister, parent and child, something else entirely as time passes? What would their relationship turn into as time passed and she grew up?

While I was initially concerned about the spooning, I kept an open mind.  Upon completion of the book, I felt that their relationship was like brother/sister and like parent/child.  Quinn even went so far as to call Sadie Sarah twice!  More on that in the week three thread.  Quinn was also protector of Sadie, so in that sense he was like a parent.  The physical closeness they enjoyed was in response to the normal human desire for physical comfort and interaction with other humans.

So much of Bereft includes illusions. I was wondering about Sadie, and did she have some physic training or ability? She told Quinn that she prayed him here and she brought him here. While in London, Quinn generates some attention from Mrs. Crenshaw, the manager of the seance sisters. Also, Marguerite, one of the sisters, risks giving Quinn a message in a note and places it in his pocket where he finds it later. In the note, Quinn is asked to "save her", and Quinn hasn't even met Sadie yet. Sadie also tells Quinn that he must kill Dalton for the others, not just to avenge Sara's death.

Some of this information, Sadie has gotten from breaking into homes and taking things, and by spying and eavesdropping. But, there seems to be more to it.

I thought that Sadie had some physic abilities.  Part of what made the book fascinating for me was that I couldn't quite state for certain that this was true.  There was enough ambiguity to keep the seed of doubt alive.

Now this is very interesting!  I got the impression from the epilogue that Sadie and Quinn didn't have many years together, so I wouldn't have expected to hear about them again.

I can't imagine your next book having any difficulites in the publishing process, Chris!  Bereft is outstanding!

I also liked the ambiguity surrounding Sadie. At one point I thought she might be a ghost or just part of Quinn's imagination because of his attachment to his sister.

I keep thinking yes she is real and then changing to no she is not, it's all in Quinn's mind. When Quinn starts to tell her about the day she was born, he is talking about Sarah. Sadie just accepts this and doesn't correct him. I had the feeling that they were replacing what they both had loved and lost. In the end I did think Sadie was a real girl.

But she was a bit more then that. When she tells Quinn he needs to ware a leather satchel that contains charms and a gold ring so that Gacies dogs won't hear him it worked. Gracie was surprised that his many dogs did not alert him to Quinn at his door.

I have 2 large dogs and that would surprise me also !

Re: I've finished Bereft and I want to spill spoilers

At first, I thought that Sadie was a spirit conjured up by Quinn's imagination. When it became apparent that she was real, I wondered if the message he received, that said "save her", applied to both Sarah and Sadie. Maybe Sarah wanted her murderers brought to justice so she could rest. Maybe she had posessed Sadie so he could save them both, ultimately, setting both of them free. Of course, you would have to believe in spirits to even entertain this possibility!

Ah ah!  Sarah possessing Sadie!  Makes sense to me!  And maybe Sarah was only with Sadie sometimes, not all the time, which would help explain why Quinn only called her Sarah at times.  I like this theory!

I love this theory TWJ! And if Sarah only possessed Sadie part of the time like Fozzie suggested, many of my questions surrounding Sadie would be answered. Maybe I'm wrong, but I couldn't remember Quinn telling Sadie about Sarah's special nickname for him, Pim. At the beginning of Chapter 21, when Sadie is leading Quinn and the lamb through the bush toward the Cave of Hands, he hesitates. "Pim," she whispers. "You have to trust me." Since I don't remember Quinn telling Sadie about this nickname, I couldn't figure out how she came to use it. These theories have really opened my eyes! Thanks!

I don't think that Quinn told Sadie about that nickname either.  That, to me, was further evidence of Sadie's powers, or now, with the new theory, maybe a time when Sarah was with Sadie.
