Hi, I'm Wylee, and I'm enjoying the Nook Color I got for Christmas.
I've come up with an idea for a new genre: Informative Fiction.
I think it's rather self explanatory: a fictional story, where the reader learns
something of value. For example: Still Alice by Lisa Genova.

I learned a lot about Alzheimer's disease by reading this book.
What books can you all suggest for me that would fit into my made-up genre??
PS. I dislike any romance books, and I'm tired of murder mysteries.
THANKS ALL

Hi Wylee, and welcome to the forum. hmmm Informative Fiction, I think really all fiction could be put under that umbrella, romance, drama, mystery etc..
but I think I know what you're saying and here is my contribution
In the Novel
I learned more about the legend of Robin Hood and how 11th Century England really was
in
learned about all the military dogs that were left in Vietnam after the war
and in
Outlander (Outlander Series #1)
I learned a lot about Scotish history and early American history as well and a great love story too.
Thanks for visiting and I hope to see you more often

This is an older book, but a wonderful primer on the flora and fauna of the back woods and bogs of the Michigan swamps. It is also a story of the fight between the landowners and the great logging barons of the early 20th century that were clear foresting the forests of that area and the Appalacian Mountains.
A story that gives a unique picture into ancient Mid-eastern history and a wonderful first hand view of the life and work of archeology.
I'll keep thinking on it. I know I have read many novels that center around a theme about a special subject. But I need to think on it for a bit.

BTW, welcome to the boards, and welcome to General Fiction. Join in and get to know us. Our reading is broad in it's scope and the conversation can be brisk and lifting.

Gosh I have a LONG list but I'll try to trim it down. You can learn a lot via historical fiction and books set in other cultures. Here are some of my faves:
Moloka'i The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
East Wind, Rain Sarah's Key Loving Frank
Black Englishman The Help The Good Earth
When the Emperor Was Divine Cutting for Stone
A Conspiracy of Paper (Benjamin Weaver Series #1) The White Tiger
Pearl of China A Young Man's Guide to Late Capitalism
Another one of Lisa Genova's novels that is informative is Left Neglected
Hope you find something that piques your interest.![]()

Hi Wyle,
You might want to consider alternate history books. They cover historical fiction and a timeline of disastrous historical events. These are two authors I really enjoy on this subject. ![]()
