Week Two
Sara
On page 105 in the HB version Sara wonders --- “at what point in her life she had ceased to be Gulliver and had become the strings holding him to the ground.”
And then on page 125 when she describes herself as being the tide pool
What does this say about who she was and what’s she’s becoming – or does it say anything at all.
Sara and Henry are twins and yet they seem so different, or do they
Tell us if you think they are different or not
How did you feel about how Henry went about deciding where Sara went
What did you make of the email Sara sent to her dad and at the end of week two’s read how we found out that her dad is spending the summer with her
Hadley
Is an enigma, she was a very unassuming presence at first and yet was a important part of this circle, she was the one I least remembered from the first time reading the novel and yet when I re-read her story it was the one that most spoke to my heart. I think the reason for that is very personal to me because I also lost my dad in a car accident and so the cognitive part of me put her story on the back burner. So I’m glad that I re-read the novel to rediscover her once more.
Give us a one word description of Hadley
Were you surprised by Hadley walking over to help Sara
On page 149 in the midst of completing her challenge she tells us that “I needed a porch”
did she find her porch, why or why not
Marion
Marion seems to be the one who has it all together – so why do you think Kate challenged her to get a tattoo
On page 173 Marion describes herself as a journalist “she was satisfied being a thought in someone’s day if it left room for her to grow into the next one. She was a chronicler of life as it was lived in that moment.”
What does this tell you about her-do you think it’s an accurate description
What do you think Marion had tattooed on her wrist – why
In finishing this second part the question of friendship kept coming up in my head, these women probably in a different situation would never have been friends, but because of circumstance, similarities and necessities they became a force. In my own life this is also the case.
Do you have a similar story – tell us
Sara
Gulliver and Strings - "Tipple Points", or points of "epiphany" when you realize that you have passed through a tipple point in life can be scary, because it is at that point you have passed the point of no return. I can remember that point when my kids were growing up and I realized that there "would be no career on stage in music" that my focus in life had shifted and family was more important that what it was earlier. But I couldn't put a finger on when, where, or how. I found the key or epiphany to sanity and not being swallowed whole was to refocus and re-direct my enegies and use those same strengths and talents that involved and supported my kids. I think this trip may possibly be that Tipple point for Sara. But she had the support and encouragement of her friends and family. Bravo!
I think Sara's dad's story is yet to come. ![]()
Hadley
One word - observant
Hadley grabbed my heart from the start. I love the Secret Garden. It was a favorite story from my childhood. I have always wanted one, and she found it. But in her pain, loneliness, and withdrawal, she saw another's need and did not think about herself before reaching out to meet the need. She saw, she cared, she did without a second agenda. In doing so, she met her own need to love again.
Marion
It is interesting how life throughs un-alikes together through a common thread. Yes, there is a story. It resides within our own community. Even though most of us have never had the opportunity to meet each other face-to-face, we have become connected. We care dearly about each other. A good many communicate on and off the board and listen and share our life's joys and trials. We are their for each other's challenges and sorrows, and celebrate together our joys and accomplishments.
Many pass through this site, but the steady who stay and become a part of the community are welcomed within the fold and come to know the fellowship that resides on this board. It is the one thing, I feel, that sets this board apart and makes it the success that it is becoming. And just like in the book, our group has personalities, and leaders, and each one contributes their strengths to make a whole.
Wouldn't that make an interesting book?

I've loved reading these comments -- they are all so insightful!
I think April nailed it when she saw a connection between Marion's writing and the tattoo. And I don't think it's coincidental that I was writing Marion's story during that first year that the School of Essential Ingredients was out in the public eye. All of a sudden I was a public author (who still, incidentally, always wishes she could go back and edit things in her books!). As authors we are always growing older, and hopefully better at our craft -- and yet, our words stay the age we were, just like tattoos...
BTW -- I love the comment about Marion getting the tattoo on her wrist because Terry had kissed her there. I'm going to be honest and say I hadn't even thought of that -- and yet, part of my brain must have, mustn't it? Because that's a pretty big connection...
On whether or not Kate was right in assigning Marion a tattoo -- it has amazed me how many people have written to me to comment on that. My thought was always that Marion had mentioned it to Kate at one point, and thus she knew, but I think it's really fascinating what a hot topic it has become among readers. There's something about one person telling another to mark their body that really sparks conversation!
Sorry that I've been a bit out of the loop this week. We had some rather interesting weather here and I was snowbound out in our house in Port Townsend. Great for revising the next book, but not so much for the internet conversations...
