Re: Joy for Beginners Week Three Questions

I really liked Ava’s story.  Ava and Kate have essentially known each other their whole lives, so I know that a lot in the relationship goes without saying and may be incomprehensible to people.  I thought the reason that Ava did not go to help Kate was very straight forward and very logical --- “the possibility of the smell of death on her best friend was more than she could stand.”  (pg. 196)  Fear.  I think Kate knew this.  Kate clearly stated the reason for giving Ava her challenge on page 218 --- Kate wanted Ava to come home.  Kate wanted Ava to come back to being her friend without fear.  What a wonderful challenge!  And reward!

I knew that Kate would go skinny dipping at the time it was presented to her on the trip.  We learn on page 245 that she had gotten rid of the full-length mirror when her husband had moved out, and he had taken her sex life with him.  She was just getting ready to begin dating again when she received her diagnosis.  On the raft trip, she was on a journey of acceptance of herself.   Skinny dipping and seeing the rattlesnakes mating were two milestones on the journey.  The final milestone was jumping off the cliff.  For the record, I would not take the raft trip, but if I did, I would definitely jump!

I had to laugh about the impact of the water on tampons!  I had one flushed out of me once when I fell while waterskiing!  Water is a powerful force!

The quote on page 262, in which Kate refers to herself as a river means that taking care of Kate was as therapeutic for the women as it was for Kate to go on the rafting trip.  This speaks to the interconnectedness of the group of friends and the symbiotic relationships that exist between everyone.

One thing that I don’t think we mentioned was the times in the book where cooking and food were mentioned --- I noticed and enjoyed them all!

Laura, thank you for your thoughts and comments and OH my yes, why wasn't the food mentioned, it was often a catalyst in the book for getting together, for sharing, for love.

I remember how Dan commented about the food they were getting after Sara came home from her trip, and how sexy Henry made bread baking and how it was used as a celebration for Kate

Re: Joy for Beginners Week Three Questions

Wow!  There is nothing like coming to the party late when everyone else has already sampled the food and told their best stories. I wanted to wait until I had finished the novel to read the questions--so here I am.  (Better late than never?)

Having read all the wonderful answers and stories from Muse, Patti, April, and Laura, (and Deb and Erica, too!) I'm not sure I have much to add.  I will say that as I was reading, I took what Kate said about challenging Ava to do the walk at face value--I felt Kate's most conscious motive was simply to get Ava home again, to share some time with with her. Later, during  Kate's chapter, when Kate speaks of having been the river, having learned deep secrets from all her friends, I realized how much time she had had to think about the fears and problems her friends faced before she set up the challenges. At that point, I felt, perhaps, Kate had also thought about Ava's fears and set up this specific challenge. I, however, found myself returning to my first thought:  Kate simply wanted to spend time with Ava, have her home, and the motives about facing the big C--was secondary.   Then I also thought about how Ava had kept well-meaning friends out of her mother's room, fearing that they would burden her mother with their own fears and problems.  I wondered if Ava would have, perhaps, become overly protective of Kate also, if she had been around more, if Kate would have wanted that.    I also wondered if another reason Ava did not come more often during Kate's illness is that she was afraid that she, too, would let her guard down and tell more than she wanted Kate to know.

I, too, can relate to the smell of life idea--White Shoulders perfume/powder is my mom, dressed for church--purse, shoes, and gloves all matching--my mom prior to the strokes and 16 years in the nursing home.

Two aspects of the book I really enjoyed:  I was pulled into the interweaving of the characters' lives and stories, all the rich details and subtlties of the layering.  And I loved the fact that most of the character stories necessitated a great deal of flashback, but Kate's final chapter (and, of course, it had some flashback) was mostly present tense and looking forward (complete with all the rebirth/baptism imagery).

Re: Joy for Beginners Week Three Questions

whiteginger, thanks for sharing and please never feel like you've come to the party too late, even if you have the same thoughts as others we want to know.

I remember reading that Kate just wanted Ava to come home and I wondered about that at the time, I wondered what she meant by bringing Ava home, did she mean just location wise or was she more metaphorical than that.

Something else you said touched me and made me remember the novel, was about most of the sections were about looking back as well as forward where Kate's was mostly in the present tense.

And one more thing, would you have jumped?

Ginger,

I loved your viewpoint on the book, especially the part about Kate and the rebirth and baptism.  I didn't see that...DUH.  It's there and you are right.  Good catch.

I am glad you mentioned the tenses!  I remember noticing it when I read the book, but it is good to be reminded of the author's use of tense to create a feeling as we come to the end of the discussion.
