Re: The Best of 2006

Anybody else read Claudel's By a Slow River? That was my vote for the year's best. It's something of a murder mystery set in France during World War I, but that's only part of it. Basically follows a policeman in a small town during the war, trying to get to the bottom of some mysterious deaths which may or may not be related. It didn't get a whole lot of attention but it was really beautiful, sad, mysterious, and surprising. And it seemed just to fly by -- a lot of emotional power packed into a few pages.
