The founder Sarah Burningham and Katie Olsen another publicist working for her will be here for you to talk to about what a publicist does, what role they play before during and after the release of a novel and just to answer any questions you might have for them.
You may also like to know all the different authors they represent.
So without further ado I'll turn this over to Sarah.
Welcome to the forum Sarah!!!!
We're so excited to have you here for the month.

Thrilled to be here! I'm really looking forward to chatting about PARIS NOIRE and getting views from the other book club members. It's going to be a great month.

Hello Sara,
I am sorry that I was not able to be here earlier this morning, but been out and about. What all does a publicist do to get a book ready for release? What is your role?

Hi Muse,
A publicist helps with media, events, and generally spreading the buzz about a book. We usually start months before a book is available in stores and online, arranging interviews and reviews, and coordinating the media coverage so that readers are seeing it when the book actually goes on sale. It's a really fun, creative job. You get to work with so many talented authors, the hard-working teams in-house at publishers, dedicated booksellers, thoughtful editors, bloggers and reviewers, and of couse, readers!

What a wonderful job.
What makes Paris Noire a special read and sets this story apart from the mass of books that are released every month?

One of my favorite aspects of PARIS NOIRE is that it shares a piece of Paris you don't often see. Francine Thomas Howard explores the immigrant and African American communities just after the end of WWII, weaving their stories in with a history many of us are familiar with. And what stories they are! I particularly love the spunky jazz singer Glovia. A great character. I could feel her passion for life practically bursting off the page.

Thank you for joining us this month! I'm sorry I'm a bit behind here, trying to recover from a seemingly endless bout of bronchitis.....
I'm very much enjoying Paris Noire, kind of in spite of myself. I start to feel kind of anxious when characters put themselves in precarious positions, which then makes me close the book and walk away. Alas, they're still waiting there when I return. Sigh, this just happens over and over in this book, and I just need to grow up and read on! ![]()
I am curious as to the other authors you represent, and if you have a variety of genres under your umbrella. Thanks again!!

Hi there,
I represent authors from across the literary spectrum - fiction AND nonfiction, genre and debuts. You can check out some of my clients here: http://littlebirdpublicity.com/clients-campaigns/. One of my favorite parts of being a publicist is being exposed to new ideas and experts in all different fields. How many people are lucky enough to get to read as part of their job?!

It really is a great job - I learn so much with every book! And getting to work with writers? You can't ask for anything better than that.

Hi Sarah and thank you so much for taking the time to comment and chat with our members who appear to be really silent, maybe they don't know what to ask, so I've given every one enough time so these questions are for those of my flock who are too shy to ask questions. I know you're out there because this thread has had 90 hits.
here goes
Sarah,
do publicity agents travel with authors on tour, signings etc...

It's a good question! Sometimes I travel with authors and sometimes they travel by themselves. It depends how comfortable they are, which cities they are going to, and what the schedules are like. Touring can be really exhausting and most of the authors I work with like to have someone with them to help navigate and make sure they stay on schedule. And to be honest, I love traveling with people. You really get to know them and there can be some really fun moments. I hate the airports (and the security lines) but otherwise it's an adventure.
Overall. authors are touring less than they used to, because thanks to technology (and book chats like this one) there's a lot more online connection.
