Pjpick -- I saw your pick from Custer State Park bookstand!  You bring back memories.  I worked in the Hills the summer I was 21 -- there were four of us who went out there together from college.  Lots of memories, including a car breakdown out in the middle of Custer State Park about sundown, the lone old buffalo roaming away from his herd, the Forest Rangers who rescued us.  Also, few sights are any more engraved in my memory than the beauty and grandeur of Mount Rushmore and surrounding trees in the early morning light (~4 a.m.), even though it was carved for maximum effect of the shadows late morning, about 10 a.m. CST if I recall correctly.

It is a beautiful place, isn't it? I think you're right. regarding the morning light. The faces were a little too light to see from Iron Mtn Rd in the afternoon.  They have built up quite the area around it. LOTS of granite! LOL! We didn't get to see the donkeys though, the motorcycles scared them up into the hills (we were there the week after Sturgis Week and there were still many motorcycles (harleys) around). I really enjoyed the area. It isn't as overrun as Yellowstone or the Tetons. THe locals were extremely nice as well. I bet it was a lot of fun working there for a summer.

The Madonnas of Leningrad

Hi Everyone - and Debbie - Many thanks for recommending The Madonnas of Leningrad. I finished the book this morning and it was indeed a wonderful book. Parts of it are disturbing yet parts are beautiful. It made me glad that I read it, but sorry that it ended. I guess that's what a good book should do. Thanks again & Happy Reading...

I just finished Daddy's Little Girl , and I was planning to go to finish The Devil in the White City  & start

Two Little Girls in Blue   ,

but once again I got sidetracked and started

The Air We Breathe  , that I have wanted to read for awhile.  Now there's no telling which one I'll finish first.

Re: What are you reading? - Off Topic tour

[ Edited ]

Hi Pepper, thanks for your, and PJ's, talk and tour of Mt. Rushmore.  I've never been there!  Maybe our train should head in that direction next?  (although, I was thinking of getting there by way of Carlsbad Caverns, and up into Colorado, MM's old haunt?)  But, we can discuss this by the campfire, on the other thread.  I'm sure there are tales to tell along the trail on this one!  :smileyhappy:  And Nancy, you gotta drive a wagon, or ride on a horse now, not a hog! lol

Kathy, the Caverns are amazing! All other caves won't compare after you see them. Of course, I'm biased, I am a NM girl.  If you go, you have to stay for the bat show. Otherwise, it's a one hit wonder in the area so don't expect to take in other sites when you're there (possibly a nice evening float on the river in Carlsbad).  If you all come up through Colorado let me know, maybe I can meet you! LOL! By train were you meaning Amtrak?

No, we're in a wagon train over on the -  What If I could only own six novels, thread.... :smileyvery-happy:...we're hauling books around the country.  I think by know Pepper has started a lending library out of her Conestoga wagon...as we pass through small towns.  Yes, I've been to the caverns, as a kid, and they were an amazing sight...scary, too!  We were in Yosemite last night, not sure where we are headed after that.  Come and join us.  LOL

Yes, do come and join us!  That ole lending library may have to leave some books behind on the trail, but it is always looking for more.  (I have not seen either Yosemite or the Caverns. :smileysad: )

Not for the Conestoga, but I started a "new" novel yesterday (mine is a library copy):

The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope

Sixteen chapters into this 100 chapter novel (they are short), I think it will hold my attention enough to stay with it -- good old Victorian novels from before the days of so many media to grab our time. The characters seem capable of capturing one's interest, from the once-abused, novelist widow Mrs. Carbury to her spoiled grown son Sir Felix to the dubious American stock-seller Mr. Fisker, plus a handful of other potentially significant and secondary characters.

The following is not particularly relevant to the plot line, but may amuse and certainly is indicative of the edge of satire with which Trollope comments on society:

"...He would not probably say that the book was accurate, but he would be able to declare that it was delightful reading, that the feminine characteristics of the queens had been touched with a masterly hand, and that the work was one which would certainly make its way into all drawing-rooms. He was an adept at this sort of work, and knew well how to review such a book as Lady Carbury's 'Criminal Queens,' without bestowing much trouble on the reading. He could almost do it without cutting the book, so that its value for purposes of after sale might not be injured...."   Chapter I, "Three Editors"

"Seize the moments of happiness, love and be loved! That is the only reality in the world, all else is folly. It is the one thing we are interested in here." -- Leo Tolstoy
