What are your recent book purchases?

A while back, someone started a thread, "What are your recent book purchases?"  I found it a very handy thread to browse for new book choices. I enjoyed it so much that I'm going to start it again. Here are my recent purchases:

Fortunate Sons

My Name Is Mary Sutter

The Forest People

Biting the Dust

Educating Alice

The True and Authentic History of Jenny Dorset

It's a little bit of an eclectic bunch but it was a good day at the swap!

Thanks pj for the new and interesting thread, I'll wait until tomorrow at work to fill it out seeing as dial up here at home takes a loooooong time to download anything.

Good to see you here Stephanie, how's school going?

School is done for me for now, my summer semester begins in May.  I am just relaxing and taking the downtime to get ready for school in summer.  Have a good day Debbie

Deb & Shadowcat:  Thanks Ladies!  I'm more nervous about taking classes the second time around than I was the first.  I've decided I'm not cut out for corporate America and have decided that I want to work with the hearing impaired.  I'll be working towards this while working full time, so who knows how long it will take me...............................

That's great, I always love those who work with disabillities.  I have a cousin who has cerebal palsy.  He's pretty smart but, a lot of people don't see it.  They see his wheelchair, they think because his speech is not perfect, that he's helpless and dumb and that just breaks my heart.  So anyone that wants to help people who are disabled, I think are very honorable.

My major is journalism with a minor in photojournalism as well.  Though my advisor is urging me to pursue the photojournalism because I have "a good eye" to quote him.  I am actually considering it but, haven't made a change yet.

Sarah, I'm sure there will be ups and downs on your road, hopefully many more ups. It takes courage to follow your heart especially after you thought you were done with school. And I'll quote my daughter here who is classically trained in Opera and teaches as an adjunct at three colleges with no healthcare and no full time available to those without doctorates when she explains to her father why she won't get a "real" job. She always tells him that at least when she retires she can say she did what she loved and not just what paid the bills.

I hope you'll update us often as to how it's all going for you.

I totally agree with your daughter Debbie! I say the same thing..If you're not happy with what you do then you have to find something that makes you happy, that makes you feel you are contributing to something. I know sometimes there are challenges and we can't always find the job we would like to have. I worked many years in different restaurans trying to pay for my school and my bills and even though I don't work there anymore and I've been working closer to my field of study for the past 3 years, I am still not where I want to be but I am working hard to get there. I see so many miserable people around me every day, especially at work. They don't enjoy the day, they don't like what they do and the irony of it is they've been doing it for 20-30 years!!! I think that if we're going to spend half of our day in one place working,it better be something that we enjoy doing!

Hi Sarah, High five to ya! I've gone back twice. This last time was about 11 years in between (much harder than the 4 or 5 in between from the first time).  I think you'll find the "helping people" careers very rewarding--they can be stressful but the rewards are instantaneous and fantastic!

Re: What are your recent book purchases?

Oath Betrayed

The Violets of March

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Lost in Shangri-La

Freedom Riders

The Oracle of Stamboul

Like Sarah, I'm not quite sure when I'll find time to read either but somehow I just can't help myself from buying new reading material. Here are my more recent purchases:

Re: What are your recent book purchases?

Thanks pj, I won a signed copy of this book from the author and I've been dying to read it, but as soon as I think I have time I get another fed ex, ups or the mail carrier drops off a huge box for me to review. I hope to get to this very soon, but if you read it first I'd love to hear what you think

Re: What are your recent book purchases?

A friend on goodreads read it as an ARC and gave it really good reviews. She reviews books honestly (i.e. won't give it a good review just because it is free) so I feel pretty good about it. I imagine you might get to it long before I do! LOL!

Re: What are your recent book purchases?

The Art of Racing in the Rain

This had been on my eWishList forever, and suddenly the price dropped to $5.99 (from $9.99).  I was in total shock!  (Nothing on my eWishList ever drops in price!)  The next thing I knew, I had an email confirmation of purchase!  (I honestly don't remember clicking the BUY button--but as I said, I was in total shock!)

NOTE:  Obviously, shock activates my "use exclamation points lavishly" mode!
