Haven't read the Swan Thief yet, but I read a review that seemed to think she dragged it out a bit. And I totally get what you mean about the parts its hard to get through. I'm stuck at one at the moment. And I need to get out because its due back at the library soon!

Hi all!! As far as YA, I have also read the first two Hunger Games books and LOVED them....I have the release date for the third on my calendar!! I have bought the Percy Jackson series as well as the House of Night series - but haven't started them yet. And yes, I read the Twilight series and thought it was fabulous! Recently, I have read Eternal on the Water (for the First Look group), the first two Sookie Stackhouse books, a random booked called "Meeting Evil" that I picked up browsing through a bookstore and right now am reading "My First Five Husbands, and the Ones Who Got Away" from Rue McClanahan. That was another book I found in my random browsing and being a huge fan of the "Golden Girls" I couldn't help myself. It is delightful! Like reading "Blanche" instead of watching her!
As you can see - my reading goes with which ever way the wind blows!! There are few books that I won't give a try!
Can't wait to get this one and start on it---my person goal is 100 books this year. Right now, I'm falling a little behind - only logging 4.5 for January so far---but this is one goal I will enjoy working hard on!

Wow! 100 books! I'm aiming for 82 this year (a book and a half a week) and I'm not doing to bad. So far I'm at 5 books and almost done with the newest book I'm reading. Good luck hitting your goal!

I just finished reading Cloud Chamber by Joyce Maynard. A 7th grade student brought this in from a local library and said it was her favorite book. It was a really good book! It deals with the struggles a 14 year-old boy deals with when his father tries to attempt suicide. I was really shocked to find out at the end of the book it took place back in the late 1960's! The book was very well written!
Before that I read Looking for Alaska by John Green. I thought this book was amazing although I wish I could take just a very small scene out of the books so I could leave it out for my 8th graders to read!
I am really looking forward to reading this book!

I read The Swan Thieves and enjoyed the story, it wasn't as good as The Historian. BUT, I am not sure anything can measure up to The Historian because it was such a great book. If I hadn't been expecting the new story to be like The Historian, I might have liked it even more. She definitely gets you wrapped up into the story so that you are trying to figure it all out. I say give it a try!

I recently read The Swan Thieves, which is her second book. It's very different from The Historian. Instead of retelling the Dracula story, it focuses on uncovering the reasons behind an artist's apparent mental illness (he attacks a painting at the National Gallery of Art)--reasons that are rooted in a mystery at the heart of French Impressionism. I didn't like it quite as much as The Historian, but it was well-written, and it shares the same method of assembling bits of a hidden story. I would recommend checking it out of the library (or reading the first few pages in the bookstore) to see if you like it before you buy it.
spaz_k7 wrote:I love The Historian as well. It is very well written with a lot of in depth detail. I love how many legends and myths the writer includes in the story. I found a few parts difficult to get through but I plan to reread it this summer. Has anyone read Elizabeth Kostova's second book? I haven't read it yet but would like to know what you think of it before I buy it.
Rebz wrote:I'm currently reading Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian with my school's book club. I didn't think I'd like it, but I absolutely LOVE it, its up on my favorites list! It's a little lengthy, but a very easy and fast read. It sucks you in and you don't even realize its so long---you don't mind it AT ALL! If you like history and different cultures, this is the book for you because of the vivid descriptions of countries like Turkey. And of course, this book is mainly about VAMPIRES. So if you are a vampire fan...this one is DEFINITELY for you!

I also loved the Historian, a few of my friends found it a little too wordy at times and that part is true. But the story itself was definitely worth the read.
I'm waiting until my budget allows for The Swan Thieves but I'm sure I'll like it too and reading about it here makes me want to get it now.
If you liked The Historian and Stoker's Dracula, Stoker's grand-nephew and a writing partner just published a few months ago Dracula The Un-Dead. It's a great novel too.

I've been reading the Hunger Games series (The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and a third due out September 2010) and they're very well done. I also like Harry Potter a lot (although the epilogue to the last one was a bit overdone and contrived, I thought). The Octavian Nothing books were great historical fiction, set around the time of the American Revolution. I've been looking at Leviathan in bookstores for a while and have it on request at the library.
I listened to the Hunger Games on CD and loved it. I am definitely planning on reading Catching Fire. Did you like it as well as the Hunger Games?

That's cool! I just finished reading If I Stay by Gayle Forman, and it was the shortest but most entertaining adventure I've ever read. ![]()
It's a story of love, accomplishments, and learning new things. I think anyone, any age (above 12 so they understand) would enjoy how this book turns out. If you don't like reading about death though, this isn't the book for you.

Ghosts of War I have also read the Hunger Games series, and it was excellent. I can't wait until the next book comes out this fall. I have started a book called Ghosts of War. It is a true story and a 19 year old boy who went to Iraq after 9/11. He felt it was his obligation to go fight the war. It seems like a great book so far. I highly recommend it.

I am currently reading Willow. At first it was a little slow, and I was going to stop reading it. However now I'm glad I stuck with it because it's getting really good! I definitely recommend this book.
