Re: Questions for Lauren Oliver?

Hi Lauren, first off I loved you book. Once I got to the end I was really wondering about the other characters. How and IF they change as well, once Sam does what she does (I don't want to give away spoilers) do her friends change, particularly Lindsey? And how do they cope afterwards?

Lauren, thank you so much for your time and your book. While I am not a YA, I do enjoy good YA literature and am enjoying your book. I am sticking to the reading schedule, so will save any questions that might be answered in the book until later. My question for you right now is this. What is your hope for this book? What impact would you like it to make?

Hi Lauren,

Thanks for sharing your amazing book with us and being here!! I loved it, I read it in about two days. I probably should've slowed down but it was so good I couldn't put it down. I felt like I could relate to Sam because I was a bit like her during my sophmore year in High School. I'm glad I changed. I think all of the questions that I wanted to ask were already answered but I have this silly question: When you were writing the book did you know that this year's February 12 would land on a Friday?

Ha--no, I didn't! I was totally freaked out on Friday, actually. I was just praying my day would turn out better than Sam's... (It did.)

Hmmm. Right now I feel very, very anxious, because the book is so close to its release and I have such high hopes for its success! But in general I felt the same way I always feel after writing and completing a book--both a rush of exhilaration for having finished, for having brought the book and its characters "home," and also a tremendous sense of loss. Usually I cry right after I finish books.

Hi Lauren!(;

Everyone on here says they are staying on schedule with the chapters, but once i started reading i had to find out how Sam lived every single last seven days, and read it really quick. I think before i fall is amazing, and that you are a talented young author. My question is about the writing process. When you were writing this, what were some of the harder scenes to write? The easiest? And did you ever get stuck on some parts?

Also, i loved all of your characters by the end. In the beginning i was shocked by the girl's behavior, but by the end really cared for Sam, and i felt really sorry for Lindsay, and hope she too could eventually change. Was it hard creating these dynamic characters? Who did you find was easier to write about in situations, and who took more time and thought?

Thank you for this amazing novel and i wish you luck in your future!(:

Thanks so much for reading, and for your generous words! I am so glad you connected to the novel. In terms of characterizations: no, it wasn't hard for me to write these characters, as I felt I really understood them all. I'm a very character-driven person; plotting is actually what is most difficult for me. (I agonize over my outlines--that's definitely the hardest part of my writing process. I could quite happily write a book in which absolutely nothing happens, and fear that some day I will!) I understood from the start that Sam and Lindsay were driven by fears and anxieties and veiled insecurities; I knew people like that, and I am like that to some degree. And I also understood their fierce love for and loyalty to one another, since I have three very best friends who are like my family.

Hmmm. I'm not sure, actually. That is for you to determine! One of the things I like best about books is that each reader can imagine their continuation for him or herself...you can create the post-book world on your own. But I like to think that at the heart of BEFORE I FALL is a message about change and allowing yourself to change--so I would hope that there is change ahead for Lindsay, yes.

Oh, man. Right now I am really, really just hoping that some people actually buy the book, so my publishers don't give up on me and I can keep writing! On a deeper level, I hope that people will connect to it on a truly personal level. I've received some incredible responses from people who have read and been moved by the book, who have felt it inspired them to be better, or to reach out to their families, etc. That is the kind of response a writer can work his or her whole life to achieve, and I am grateful and humbled by the opportunity to have written a book that has touched a few people that way. To do that on a larger scale would be, of course, unbelievable and wonderful.

Re: Questions for Lauren Oliver?

Hello Lauren Oliver, I just wanted to let you know that you made me feel really special because I've never read an advanced copy before; so thank you.

Also I wanted to ask you how you came up with the characters in your book; were you one of the popular girls in high school? If not was this how people in your school acted? And why seven days?

Hey, Lauren!

First of all, I have to say that I love the book so far! I'm only on chapter five, but it's very addicting in the best way.

I only have one question: When you started writing the book, did you decide early on that you would have Sam begin as a "mean girl"?

People in my high school were not as mean, necessarily, as the girls in this book, although there was definitely some cruelty there and to be honest I probably was not privy to the worst of what went on--my friends and I were somewhat inured from it, as we were decently popular. (We were not, however, the mean girls, although I certainly did some things in high school I'm not proud of.) But people taunted one another, and started rumors about one another, and humiliated one another, and labeled people sluts and freaks and fat and ugly. That was just the reality of my experience. My classmates also drank, smoked, bought weed, cut class, and had sex--not all of them, but some certainly did. That was also a reality for me.

The seven days was not necessarily deliberate; that was just the quantity of time it took for me to complete Sam's character arc. I was pleased that it took seven days, however, as that time frame obviously has lots of significance.

Ha. Thanks so much. And yes, absolutely. Sam's meanness--and her evolution throughout the book--was at the heart and core of the book. She needed to be terrible, so I could make her change.

Re: Questions for Lauren Oliver?

Hi,

In your research for the book, did you come across any evidence pointing to the causes of such "mean" behavior or to any reasons as to why this behavior seems to be beginning at younger ages, even in grade school?

Re: Questions for Lauren Oliver?

Hi Lauren, welcome! I finished Before I Fall pretty quickly, and I loved it. From the beginning, we know Sam is going to die. I was wondering was it hard to write about a character who you knew had to die and dies seven times? Also, I'm wondering if you ever thought of writing a sequel maybe based off another character? I really want to know how Sam's friends, Kent, and Juliet think about her final act! Thanks : )

What inspired you to write this book? And how much of it did you have planned, as in....what direction were you going when you initially started, and how much changed as you neared the end?

Do you think your book will be on an e-book reader or just a hard copy? Actually, how does it get on an e-book reader?

It's already available on B&N as an ebook
