As I read, I kept picturing Uma Thurman as Mary.

Re: Casting Call!

[ Edited ]

I find it interesting that race doesn't seem to be factored in with some of the suggestions here. (ie. Mekhi Pheifer as Freddy).... I'm not saying it couldn't work, but Northern New England is very white and to cast anyone other than Francis as black would change the dynamic between Francis and everyone else in the novel. It might not be a bad thing, but it would change Francis' story of an inner city young black male going to a wealthy prep school in New Hampshire surrounded by white kids who can't understand the suicide pact he made with his friends from home.

oooh I love Hilary Swank as Mary! I have yet to see (or think of) my perfect Cobb, though.

How old DO you think Cobb and Mary are?

Re: Casting Call!

This is a great game to play, but I'm not so good at it.

How about: Mary -Ellen Page ( Juno )

                  Cobb- I dunno

Freddy- the actor who plays Sawyer on Lost

or     Mary- Doris Day

        Cobb-Rock Hudson

Were there rules about the stars actually still being available? HA!

I see them in their early thirties maybe just a tad older, which is why when I said Daine Lane or Meg Ryan I mentioned the actors were older than I imagined the characters. I really see the younger version of either one of those as Mary, or a younger actresses with thier qualities.

Cobb - Eric Bana
Mary - Amy Adams (Julie & Julia, Sunshine Cleaning)

John and Annie - George Clooney and Vera Fermiga
Wally - Kathy Bates
Freddy - Matthew McConaughey

Francis- Mekhi Pfeiffer

Mary's Mother-Helen Mirren

Cobb's Dad-James Garner

Matthew McConaughey as Freddy is a great choice.  He wouldn't even have to "get into character" - he already is!

Re: Casting Call!

I must have missed the description of Freddy as having extra weight, people keep commenting on it but that didn't stand out to me when I was reading.  Wouldn't it be neat if one of these First Looks actually ended up being a movie?  Has that ever happened?

What a wonderful novel for all of our armchair directors to take on!

It is your job to cast the film version of Eternal on the Water. Who is Cobb? Who is Mary? Wally? Francis? Please cast your favorite characters for us!

Mary - Natalie Portman. She is the only one I had a clear picture of who I would cast.  The whole time I was reading (especially at the beginning) I kept thinking of Portman's character in "Garden State. The roles are very similar... almost too similar, I may be guilty of type-casting but I think she would be perfect for the part.  She does quirky and adorable very well.

Wally - I agree with Meryl Streep or possibly even Susan Sarandon... though I did picture someone a little heftier for the role... just not quite sure who.

Freddy - I definitely agree with other posters about Matthew McConaughey.  He's such a hippie!

Francis - Tristan Wilds, from "The Secret Life of Bees" and "The Wire."  He was excellent in both and I think could pull off aging from young highschooler to post grad.

Cobb - I still cannot think of the perfect cobb and it's really bothering me! I'll have to think about this one a little more. OR maybe since I can't pick a celeb I would go with a newcomer. I also just thought about James Mcavoy.... he could pull off the tweed-jacket professor look.

Re: Casting Call!

Mary....Anna Paquin

Cobb...Stephen Moyer

Francis....somebody new, it would be a great part for an up and comer

Wally......Jennifer Coolidge, the actress from Legally Blonde.  I pictured a tall, strong, blonde.

Freddy...James Gandolfini

Yep, thems my picks!

Re: Casting Call!

Mary- Rachel Adams or Jennifer Garner

Cobb - Ryan Gosling (he can definitely pull off the outdoorsy type)

Francis - Rob Brown (Actor in Take the Lead movie)

Wally - Kathy Bates

Freddy - Matthew McConaughey

Some other cast lists were also great!
