I never had trouble getting through all of the Gabaldon novels.  They certainly are long and wordy in their descriptions.  Really, I think we know Jamie is tall and big and has bright red hair... do we need to hear it every time Claire looks at him?  LOL  Just kidding...

Mistress of the Art of Death  is fairly far down on my to-be-read list, but if you can, let us know what you think and whether I should move it up further.

Hi Fellow Readers!  I just finished reading two books: The Giver by Lois Lowry, which I read out loud to my husband on our way back from Illinois.  It was fascinating! Actually a teen book, but the story sounded so interesting, I bought it on a whim at B&N while I was shopping for a few other books.  I also just finished reading "a big little life: A Memoir of a Joyful Dog" by Dean Koontz, (whose writing I LOVE!).  "a big little life" was fantastic!  I couldn't put it down! It made me laugh out loud and cry at the end! I highly recommend it!

After reading some of your posts, I have these fears that I don't read as voraciously as some of you do and hope I can keep up with all the posts!

Re: Community Room

Bridge of Sighs  This book is for my southern book group. I have about 125 pages to go and have a feeling the ending will surprise me. I am enjoying it but there are some times when it feels a bit disjointed because of interchanging time lines and abrupt locale changes. It is 500+ pages and I do not find it a quick read but certain unexpected common themes connect the characters so well that it makes the book very interesting and holds my interest! You may not be drawn immediately into it, but be patient. The characters are developed slowly and deeply so that you really feel you are experiencing their emotions with them. It depicts small town life so realistically that I can almost visualize the place in which it takes place. I do recommend it as a book you will enjoy reading slowly, almost as if it is a good friend you pick up and sit with when you want to relax.

The Secret River  This is my next read for my northern book group. When I am down south, I write a review and email it to them. Most of the books this group picks are excellent so I fully expect this one to be good, as well.

The Reluctant Fundamentalist  I am rereading this for a couple's group. I think it will be a great discussion because I remember being deeply affected by my first read...it is really thought provoking.

Re: Community Room

I just finished Hotel Transylvania by Chelsea Quinn Yabro. Its a very interesting book, and gives good descriptions about the society of that time. Its about vampires but in my opinion its very different from the usual vampire stories. I really recommend it if you like terror books.

Re: Community Room

For those of you who liked the

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, I would recommend the book I just finished,

Maisie Dobbs (Maisie Dobbs Series #1). Although this book is set during WWI instead of WWII and has a mystery tied up in the story, I thought it evoked the wartime ambiance nicely and that the characters were well done. If you happen to like mysteries and reading multiple books by the same author, all the better, because Jacqueline Winspear has written five additional books about Maisie (although I have yet to read them).

Now, while I'm waiting for the new First Look, I'm re-reading the Simarillion, the Hobbit, and the Lord of the Rings (as I always do around this time of year). I'm also looking into doing a lot of Melville and Hawthorne this winter, as well as A.S. Byatt's The Children's Book and Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall.

A couple of weeks ago I finished reading "Her Fearful Symmetry"     It is a strange ghost story - but I enjoyed it.   The book leaves you guessing and wondering at the end.

Re: Community Room

Someone recently lent me two books by Jonathan Tropper. The first I read was This Is Where I Leave You which had me laughing out loud and my cat thinking I had lost my mind. Now I'm reading The Book of Joe which isn't quite as comical, but is a very fun read.

I just picked up "Her Fearful Symmetry" from the library since I've heard so many things about it. I'm excited to read it, along with 6 other books I picked up.

Re: Community Room

With the Outlander books, I never had trouble with getting into them until the last two.  Ikeep putting the 7th one down when it gets to parts with the British Army because I'm not as interested, I really wish it were more Claire and Jamie and less of the other characters.

I just finished A Highlander Christmas by Janet Chapman, I love her books- they are fun, quick reads.  I'm almost done with The Christmas Jars by Wright which is a nice story but I am not totally sold on the writing style.  I stopped halfway through the 3rd Vampire Diaries to do the Christmas books books but will be back with them soon.

I won Her Fearful Symmetry on a Facebook contest last month but haven't started it yet.  I;ve heard mixed reviews about it.

Re: Community Room

I just finished The Time Traveler's Wife as well. I thought it was great. At first I didn't like it and couldn't understand all the hype but I really fell in love with it by the end. Do you plan to read her second book as well?

I have recently read Tempted too. I didn't like it as much as previous books in the series. I really like Stark and I used to think Eric was a good character but they really changed him in this book.

I also finished the sixth book in the House of Night series: Tempted. Oh it's a fascinating series, I couldn't put it down.

The 3rd book is my favorite so far so be sure you get a chance to read it!

I have read the first, second and forth books of the Outlander series. I did not intentionally skip book 3. When I was younger I bought the 4th book because I liked the cover. I know, don't judge a book by its cover. My defense is that I was a young teen at that time. I loved the book and before I was half way through I noticed I had been missing some background information on many of the characters. That is when I read the covers and saw it was a series. Well this past year I finally got around to reading the first 2 and have the 3rd on but am waiting for a good time to read it. I have school and a demanding family that makes reading long books difficult.

I am working on it. I think I am going to read it during Christmas break, if the kids give me some quiet time, lol. I have 2 weeks off from my classes so I will have more spare time.

This one is a good book.  Yes, it's a tough topic, but handled very beautifully.

Re: Community Room

I am currently listening to An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon.  I highly recommend the audio version.  Davina Porter IS Claire, Jamie, Brianna, Roger and the rest of the characters to my ear.  She does an amazing job throughout the entire series.  Keep reading, it gets better.  I always feel a little overwhelmed when I begin one of the Outlander series, but I always get sucked in and then feel sad when the book is finished.:smileysad:

Ann,

Isn't it great?  I almost didn't pick it up, due to bad reviews, but I'm so glad I ignored the reviews and bought it anyway.
