I agree about the name: I had to read it a few times to make sure of the spelling and such. I also thought it was 'Halloween' and was bothered by it at first - looked it over again and realized it said, 'Hallowen' - confusing, but a minor detail.

I bwish I would have liked this one as much as everyone else seems to. For some reason, I just couldn't really "get into" the story. I will pass this book on to a good friend who really enjoys this style/genre of book.
Thank you for the opportunity to read it!!

I have read the commericalism comments and I don't get it. I have tried to remember brand products and I just can't. I must have read right over them and dismissed them as not important.
I gave it 4 stars. Very touching story of a man and woman who meet on a river. Cobb finds Mary to be his soul mate and yet he loses her to a terrible disease. There is lots about nature in this book, but it is not over done or boring. Mary is a very different kind of character and minor characters add a lot to the story also. Good, easy to read writing style. Would have given this book 5 stars, but just way too much naming of brand products - too much commercialism.I

Posted 01/30/10:
Joseph Monninger strikes a balance in crafting this tale of love and loss. His connection to the natural world is apparent from the start and his ability to describe the beautiful landscapes of Maine in fall, Yellowstone in summer and Indonesia in winter bring the story to life.
The language, especially the dialogue, is somewhat monotone. Everyone gets along so well in the story, there's no conflict or discord to make the complications of character development more compelling. The style used in the telling of folk tales throughout the novel is well-conceived and delightful. If you like stories such as "Love Story" or "The English Patient," I recommend this novel to you.

It is so fun to read a book before others get to. Now, I just wish we could all meet in person to discuss the book. It is so challenging to read all the comments and keep up with them. Thanks for the opportunity to read this book before my friends are able to. I hung on every word and wanted to savor the book. I didn't want it to end. But, all good things must come to an end.

I am another that couldn't get past the beginning chapters. Maybe I just didn't make it far enough. I will have to pick it back up and see if it picks up for me after Maine.

I posted my review on the product page, but I don't know how to post the link.
I found this book to be a moving story of love and loss. The beginning of the book really grabbed my attention. Cobb was by far my favorite character and I think the author did an excellent job of showing how Cobb came out of his shell and changed as a result of knowing Mary. Some parts of the books I found a little unrealisti, such as the Chungamunga Girls. Although the ending was a little over dramatic for my taste, I still enjoyed reading the book. Mary and Cobb's love story is one that I will long remember.
