Re: All Spoilers Welcome Thread

You are not alone. I did not like the book at all. It would have been a huge benefit to the flow of the plot if we learned more about Patch and the mythology of the fallen angels sooner or through out the course of reading. All of the information is meshed between a hundred or so pages. The book did not become interesting until page 250. Many events within the novel were completely not believable and ridiculous. The way the police simply appeared at her house and begin questioning Nora is all wrong. She is a minor and they had no right to ask her those questions. Mrs. Greene the school psychologist asks the most peculiar questions and is always warning Nora to stay way from Patch. She knows things she shouldn’t know like that Patch gave Nora a ride home and she invited him in her house. Nora doesn’t question any of it the way a normal person would. Nora simply asked how did you know that and Mrs. Greene states part of my job is to give you guidance. What the hell!!!

The chemistry between Patch and Nora is evident. Nevertheless the back and forth cat and mouse game became very irritating after 200 pages of it. I yearned for him talk to her like a normal person have a real conversation and stop all the foolishness. His story about why he has fallen is completely underplayed. He saw a beautiful human and just flew down to earth. Did they interact, did they fall in love or did he just see a pretty face. It seemed completely shallow and appalling that the story of an Angel falling would be so trivial and not better explained.

Re: All Spoilers Welcome Thread

I really enjoyed Hush, Hush!  I thought it had a nice blend of action, suspense, mystery and romance.  It kept me interested and was a fast read.  I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel.  I think there were lots of things left open for the sequel, but I would have liked to have a few more things fleshed out in this one (Nora's father's murder for one).

I did like Vee-in some ways she reminded me of my high school self-bubbly, loud, outspoken, doesn't care what others think and is always playing matchmaker.  She also reminded me of some of my friends.  I think many teens (and adults) can relate to having a friend like that.

I liked the relationship between Nora and Patch. I didn't feel like it was "love at first sight" and that it had time to build, which I liked.  Plus, the tension between them was wonderful and I could feel why she was so drawn to Patch.

I adored Patch!  I loved his bad boy turned good personality.  Although there were times I got annoyed at Nora (like when she went to Portland in search for Vee and talked to the homeless woman) I thought back to when I was a teen and probably would have done the same thing.  I never did think that Patch was the bad guy, and Elliot and Jules gave me the creeps from the start.  The plot twist surprised me and I enjoyed it.

Overall, I thought this was a fun read and I will be recommending it the teens at my library, as well as my co-workers.

The thing that bugs me about all paranormal books now is the comparision to Twilight.  This one did not have vampires, so there should be no comparisions. It's a different story.  Plus, authors start writing books years before they get published, so it's not as though every author says "I will write a story exactly like Twilight"  One type of book gets big and other publishers want to jump on that and get books in the same genre published.  That's why we're seeing so many paranormal published right now, NOT because authors are trying to be the next Twilight.  And let's remember that Stephenie Meyer's books are not that original-paranormal romance has been around long before Twilight and vampires have been around even longer.  So lets stop comparing every paranormal read to Twilight and enjoy Hush, Hush for what it is-a great love story with a mystery and a parnormal aspect.

I really enjoyed this book! I couldn't help but compare it with Twilight at times. Both Patch and Edward have a "bad boy" vibe about them, though in different ways, and they have both wanted to kill the person that they love.

[ Edited ]

I just finished it tonight and I will say for the most part I am very happy with the book. I was a little disappointed that the thickness of the plot didn't come around until 3/4 of the way through the book. Not to say I didn't enjoy the first 300 pages because I did. I think I would of like to have had a bit more back story on Patch, but hey there's a sequel so maybe we will.

Now that I have that tiny gripe out of the way, I just want to say I loved Patch! I liked not knowing until the end is he or isn't he a bad guy. Vee annoyed me until I realized it might not have been always Vee speaking. Elliot creeped me out and I never was quite sure what to think of him. Mrs. Greene, I knew something was up but could never put a finger on it. Jules was the surprise for me, I didn't even put two and two together. He was in the book but I just forgot about him until I couldn't forget about him. Totally caught me off guard. I loved that!

Re: All Spoilers Welcome Thread

I really liked this book a lot, but I am a huge fan of YA fiction.  It was a quick read, and I am rereading now so that I can be on track w/ the discussions here.  Of course it had some similarities to Twilight, but I think many YA romances would have some to the same similarities.  I will say that I agree with the previous poster about the last 40 pages seemed rushed.  I wish the author had delved deeper into Patch and Dabria's relationship.  I knew that Jules was a creepy guy, but I didn't put it together that he was Chauncey. I thought that was a great twist.

Also did anyone else think that one of the officers that came to Nora's house might be another fallen angel?  There was something strange about him, too.

One of the previous posters mentioned that she would like a prequel.  I had not thought of that, but man, it would be great.  I would love to know more about Patches history.

All in all, I loved this book and I am really bummed that I have to wait until October 2010.  I also think that it would make a really great movie.  Of course, the movie folks would probably ruin it for me because the movies are never as good as the books.

I say,  'Becca Fitzpatrick,  thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this book with us."  I am recommending it to my teenage nieces and adult friends.

I just got my copy in the mail yesterday and so far I love the book.  Thank you for saying that not all paranormal teen books should be compared to Twilight.  Each one is different, and certainly this one did not have vampires.  The only comparison I would make in regards to Twilight is the tension between the two main characters I have seen so far and the knowledge that there is something going on that is just a little paranormal or at least interesting.

Looking forward to reading further.

Re: All Spoilers Welcome Thread

I too loved the fact that Patch was a bad but good bad guy. He accepted who and what he was and the choices he made good or bad without guilt.

I was sure from the start that Elliot was bad news and Jules would come into play as being worse.

Vee is just that friend that you would be better off not having but somehow you can't give up.

Oh and of course there was the new school psychologist who was just way too weird to begin with and I got the impression early on that she somehow wanted Patch.

All in all a great book and I really look forward to more.

I thought so too!  I'm so glad I'm not the only one that caught that.  At first I didn't think anything of it, but once they came back (and especially at the end) I know something has to be up!!  I liked that and saw it as a wink and nudge for those that were in on the joke.  I'm eager to see what happens in the sequel with them-I know they've got to make another appearance!:smileyhappy:

I enjoyed this book too and it was a perfect summer read! So many of these paranormal books have the same formula but as others have said, that's what's popular now and that's what sells. At first I was afraid it was going to follow other books (like Twilight) too closely but I was very happy when it branched off in it's own direction. The fallen angels were a great theme and it's something that I haven't read much about so it was a nice change of pace.

I was able to figure out most of the ending but there were a few surprises. I was also bothered by the iron pills and am curious to hear Becca's explanation. There were other bits and pieces that got my attention and will be fun to discuss.  I also thought Miss Greene's questions were out of bounds for a guidance counselor and knew she was involved. And the scene where the cops came to investigate a burglary and left a teenage girl home alone at night under suspicious circumstances made me crazy! But that was the protective parent part of me protesting!

All in all I really enjoyed it. It wasn't perfect but I wasn't expecting a masterpiece. It was a fun experience. I like this genre, I was engrossed in the story and I really look forward to the sequel. Great debut!

Re: All Spoilers Welcome Thread

Let me just say, I am out of the demographic for this novel, a 28 yr old female college educated computer programmer. But here's my opinion anyway.

Overall, I was unimpressed.

The first 20 chapters left me just begging for SOMETHING to happen! We already knew there was a fallen angel (evident from the cover and the teaser on the back of the book), but the book takes too long to get to the point. The last chapters had me flying through them though, I couldn't wait to hear more about the fallen and the nephilim relationship and what happened to lead to the situation.

Pet peeve - a guy named Patch? That was just distracting, made me think more of a spotted dog's name than a multi-faceted character. And I've always thought Jules was a nick-name for a girl named Julie, not a guy.

I too would have enjoyed more back story on Patch, and a bit more character development on Nora.

Why did Elliot show up on the doorstep drunk? It seemed "thrown in" and out of character. Maybe just an attempt to confused the reader?

I was left with a lot of questions, though I don't know if it will be enough to prompt me to read the sequel.
- How are Chauncey and Nora related?
- What else happened in Patch's past?
- Can Nora and Patch even *have* a future now?
- What is Ms. Greene plotting for the future?

Re: All Spoilers Welcome Thread

I have read alot of books like this and I thought by far this was the best. Unlike many teenage fantasy romance novels, the plot is not predictable and the characters actually have personalities. I found myself feeling the emotions Nora was feeling in the book. Patch was amazing. He might be a better male character than Edward Cullen. This book needs to be made into a movie in the near future =] I loved it!!!

Re: All Spoilers Welcome Thread

When I started the book , I figured I would read a little at a time until the discussion started. I simply could not put it down and finished it within a day! I loved the way the characters developed. Nora and Vee remind me of some girls I knew in my high school days so it made it easier to see them in a "real" sense and begin to care about them. Patch was a devilish delight and I loved watching the relationship between him and Nora develop. I had a feeling there would be an altercation with Jules, but rather than ruin the story it made me want to read on. All in all I enjoyed it very much! :robothappy:

Re: All Spoilers Welcome Thread

OK, i was suspicious at the very beginning about Jules. He, I don't know, there was just something about him at the coffee shop, and at the amusement park, I knew he was the one in the shadows. hehehe but the fact that he was clancey was a brilliant twist!

They don't teach you how to know what's going on in someone else's mind. They don't teach you what to say to someone who's dying. They don't teach you anything worth knowing."

Re: All Spoilers Welcome Thread

I wouldn't say that I outright hated the book; however, there are some plot things that are just out of left field.  The iron pills just being one of many.   I keep getting the feeling that it was just getting good and then the scene changed.  This happened for me several times throughout the book.

I, along with you, was confused as to why he would be trying to kill her if she's his descendant.  Again, it goes back to that whole change the scene right when I am beginning to get the drift of it thing.

Maybe I will read it again to see if it's any clearer the second time around.  I was going through it trying to get to the part where the "Ah-ha!" moment was.  I can't say that I ever got to it.  So, looks like I will try second time around and see where it gets me.

Re: All Spoilers Welcome Thread

Here's part of my review from my website.

REVIEW:

Things that rocked:

--The cover is awesome, seriously cool.

--I love a bad boy. Patch in this book is a great one—sarcastic, confident, handsome, and frustrating.

--I enjoy angel stories, and this was done in an interesting way

--Pacing was good, I read it really quickly.

--Maine was a great setting, very atmospheric. Made me want to visit, I love fog.

--The end, although open for sequels, was satisfying

--Nora, the MC, is likeable and spunky.

Sour notes:

--Nora’s best friend, Vee, was a little annoying and not so bright. Nora tells her Elliot is suspected of a murder, and she goes flitting off with him alone—repeatedly. I thought we would find out later that the friend was being supernaturally influenced or something, but no, she was just dumb.

--The Marcie Millar character was straight out of central casting—witchy popular girl at your service

--The motive behind the main villain wanting to harm Nora was a little weak.

--I didn’t understand the full story behind the Elliot character, maybe I missed something.

Those are my thoughts.  But overall, I really enjoyed the book.  If you'd like to read my full review, visit me http://fictiongroupie.blogspot.com

Re: All Spoilers Welcome Thread

TIDESONG: but if nora was a descendant wouldn't that be like killing your own child, or grandchild? Or great great grandchild? The part I didn't get was not WHY he was doing, but how he could do it if the reason patch was going to kill nora was because she was a descendant of Chauncey.

I have a general question here, Nora's father was a Nephilim as well, was he not? Nephilim in this story dont seem to age or die. How could he have died, then? Actually the whole this is sort of tangled and doesn't make much sense when you try to get into the details... I guess it's like twilight in that way as well :smileytongue:

But on the bright side, while I may not have liked it, my friend is squealing over it, she says she's going to buy the finished copy and reread it just in case they change something. She likes twilight :smileyvery-happy:

When Elliot & Jules were introduced in the book, I really thought it was Elliot doing all the bad stuff. It never crossed my mind that Jules was the bad guy. His character wasn't built up too much.

Re: All Spoilers Welcome Thread

This book far surpassed my expectations. This is the first book I opened recently that I simply could not put down until I finished it. I HAD to know what happened at the end. The story flowed smoothly, and the character development was excellent. And the suspense -- it hooked me from the start. I won't spoil the story for anyone, but if there's one sequel I am looking forward to, it's this one.
