. What do you make of our opening scene in 1565? What impression do you get of Chauncey, or the mysterious boy who seems to be able to manipulate him?
Was is jarring to turn the page and find yourself in a contemporary setting? What might the opening tell us about the novel to come?
Remember, no spoilers in this thread, please!
My initial thoughts were that starting with Chauncey kind of gave too much away. I would have preferred him to have this flashback later- whichever him Patch is.
-----------------------------------
I did not think the that too much was given away in the prolouge; in fact after i finished the book. I went back to re-read it, to see what, if anything, was given away.

The only thing I can think of of the Prologue giving away any information, is when you get that part of the story, you know what is going to happen for the next couple of minutes. Beyond that, nothing was given away.

I have to say that I enjoyed the beginning of the book. I think that it may not be vital information right now, but will come back later to help us understand the story. Chauncey seemed like a young adult, so I didn't expect him to be complacent to do what this mysterious boy wanted and why should he?
As for turning into a contemporary setting, I liked it. I was somewhat pleased because I did really want to meet Patch and Nora. So I was happy. Also the beginning gives good humor to the book which made me want to continue reading.
I can't wait to see whats to come!

I really liked the beginning of the book. I put the first chapter in the back of my mind as I started to read but through the entire book I was trying to make connections to both of the boys mentioned. I loved how there was always something happening through out the entire book. I wasn't reading on and wishing something would happen. I loved the book so much that I just read it all the way through in the first sitting.

I'll admit it, when I saw the beginning opening up in 1565, I was a bit worried! It's rare that I read historical YA, though I've enjoyed a few. Thankfully, it was just the right length. Chauncey rubbed me the wrong way immediately. I knew he probably wouldn't be someone I'd be rooting for.
I was looking forward to the time jump, so it wasn't jarring at all for me. The beginning definitely gave me the feeling that Nora was going to get herself into something much larger than she ever dreamed.
Other First Impressions:
The cover is a keeper! I love the cover of this book. I know, don't judge a book by it's cover, but a perfect cover like this helps tremendously!

Yeah definitely when this story opens in the past and then goes to the present you know that there is something about the past that will weave itself into the present. I think Patch is the fallen angel who meets the duke in the beginning of this book.

I enjoyed the Prologue, the look into the past, and was hoping it would stay there for a longer duration. I, like everyone else, think Chauncey is just bad news. The immediate transition into the present was not jarring; it just seems like it was written like a movie.

Hi Everyone
My first impression is I don't like Chauncey! The author quickly managed to portray the arrogance of a 16th century French aristocrat in a few pages.
The mystery boy had little impact on me, personally I feel that there was not enough 'atmosphere' around his interaction with Chauncey or in his description.
Many of the books I have read start in the past and have a big time jump so I don't find this confusing or off-putting, and it will be interesting to see where these two fit into the story. It also left me wondering which of the characters is Patch ('cause I'm sure one of them is), my bet is on the mysterious boy

I liked how they started out like this it didn't give much away, but it also had you wondering what was the oath this guy had just been forced to

I loved the Prologue! It made me want to read more to find out what was the connection between Chauncey, the mysterious boy and the present day characters.
Chauncey feels high & mighty while the mysterious boy is like someone from the mafia!

I'm curious about Chauncey because I'm certain that he is one of the boys interested in Nora. I also wonder how her father's murder will come into play. I assume that something as big as a murdered father isn't just some throwaway bit of background.

To be honest, this part didn't seem necessary to me. I didn't completely understand who was who and why this was happening. Maybe I needed a little more written or make it clearer.
i like the others was happy when it switched to present time with the next part. I do not enjoy historical pieces.

The opening was just the right length in my opinion. If it had gone on and on or if the story jumped back and forth between the past and present, I wouldn't have enjoyed it quite so much. I've only read through chapter 9, but find the story very mysterious to this point. I also like the pace of the narrative.
I'm anxious to read more and find out how the beginning ties in with the present time characters. The fallen angel in the opening has the ability to manipulate thoughts and feelings...like Patch does with Nora. Did Patch also do that with Coach so that they would be seated together? Hmmm....

First, I'd like to thanks all those who have finished the story and have kindly refrained from spoiling anything for the rest of us.
Second, like Leandra Martinelli, I don't find the cover entirely attractive. I don't dislike it from a belief standpoint, I just think it looks REALLY dark. It needs a bit of color (red or hot pink, maybe) to make the title pop and a little embossing on the angel might be attractive, too.
Regarding my first impressions, I like a story that includes pertinent background, even if it is a bit cryptic at first. I will admit to having required my dictionary in the prologue. I didn't know what the word vassal meant, and I felt that I needed to know what it meant to understand the sentence.
I have decided to read according to the schedule, so I haven't gotten very far into the story, but I do like the building tension between Nora and Patch. My only major complaint so far is with Patch's name (or nickname). It brings to mind a character with a patch over his eye, and I find it distracting each time I read his name. I'd have preferred to have him named something more traditional, even if old-fashioned.

I am pleased to say that I found it hard to put this book down. I read the first 17 chapters in one sitting. No worries, I won't spoil anything. I knew this was going to be a good book the moment I read the blurb months ago on Authors Now. The cover art is completely amazing. I think color would have taken away from the tone of the story, as well as the "fallen angel" mythos. Stories about Lucifer aren't portrayed as puppy dogs and ice cream. I wanted to read a dark and dangerous story. I think the prologue is just fine. The behavior is consistent with the timeframe and it made me want to read more to find out what's going on. Overall these things stood out to me:
1. Pacing: the story flowed and kept my attention
2. Style: I really enjoy Becca's writing style. This is a well written book with no filler. Each scene built on the next. I didn't find the writing or POV jarring.
3. Show vs. Tell: Basically means that the author did an excellent job showing me actions and not just telling me about said “fill in the blank”. It was very easy to picture scenes while I was reading.
4. Characters: I adore both Patch and Nora. I like the fact that Patch is rough around the edges. He would have to be given his circumstance. Both characters are sympathetic at times. Very realistic interactions IMO.
I love the lurking element of the book. You never really know when the "stalker/crazy" is going to strike.

I really liked the opening because it grabbed my attention right away. Plus, I like historical books so it was kind of interesting. Chauncey seemed to be really hung up on his title as the Duc, but I was confused for a little bit after the first chapter trying to relate Chauncey to Patch. But overall I really enjoyed it.

I didn't have a problem with the prologue being set in 1565 then zooming right ahead to the present day - I liked that we got this sneak peek into the past that surely will have a connection later on it the book. It gives us questions to already ponder - what exactly did this mysterious boy require from Chauncey? So much so that he practically forced him to swear by oath? I didn't get much of a good feel for Chauncey from the prologue - he seemed too full of himself, clinging to his title. Although of course, if a mysterious boy suddenly appeared to me and began inflicting pain, insisting I swear to an oath... I probably wouldn't be the kindest person either.
I also liked it because it gave us some information on the Nephilim and fallen angels and gave the reader an idea what to expect from this book later on. Then we we're transported to the present day, Biology class. I must say that even though I enjoyed the prologue - the first chapter is what completely drew me in. I loved it and after that could not put the book down for a rest!
I also loved the cover. It was gorgeous! It's definitely an image that I would stop to look twice at if it were sitting in a book store and see what the book is about.

I agree that any color added to the cover would have ruined it for me. The book itself is very dark and mysterious, especially in the prologue. I think the cover being in black and gray tones fits well with the story and the artwork itself is great!
