Yes, it is a great read! It is so magical, the words float slowly to your brain taking in the divine meaning of each and every one of them. I just can't stop! I keep reading and reading!
Me too! I was unable to put the book down and finished it this morning! Can't wait for the discussion!

Thank you for sharing your message with us, for someone who has had a tough time with language you have overcome and conquered. I have already started reading "Of Bees and Mist" and am looking forward to sharing with everyone. Congratulations!

Oh! Carol, you are so right! Noone would ever know that Erick had any problems what so ever with the language. It sounds like he was literally born into the English Language. I guess with the barriers that cropped up into your life, learning languages became your main focus. You never have to sweat English ever again. You have fully conguered it, Erick!

Hello, Mr. Setiawan,
Thank you for introducing yourself to us. i am enjoying reading your book, and will have to make an effort to pace myself this time around. I tend to read the books at once instead of following the suggested reading/discussion guide. I'm sure Of Bees and Mist will do well. Good luck!

Erick,
Thanks so much for the "First Look" and for your introduction. In my humble opinion, you've mastered the "language dragon".
Best Wishes on your book.
Diane

Erick,
Your life story has moved me as much as your book has. You have also inspired me and many others I'm sure, into the world of reading and writing. I am an accountant by profession. Although my daily world is around numbers, I love to read and dream of writing a book someday. It's a long shot but being here at B&N's first look is one of the first steps I've taken into making my dream a reality. Thank you for inspiring us all!

I had to giggle when I read your post. I was also going to try to follow the reading/discussion guide ...well, needless to say, that didn't work for me, as I couldn't wait to see what happened. I did not finish the book yet, but I'm close to it. Great Read! I can't wait to start the discussions.

Hi Erick,
You have really made a success of your life in the face of tremendous adversity and difficulty. Is there anyone in particular in your life whom you would credit with inspiring you to follow your dream, at the tender age of 16? Is there one particular person from whom you gathered the courage to move, alone, to a strange land with a strange language and customs?
I was wondering how did you encounter the myths and customs you incorporated into your book? Were they tales told by your parents, grandparents?
Also, whose idea was it to create such a magical cover with all of the hidden symbolism? We have had fun searching for them?

Dear Reader,
For most of my life, I have had an uneasy relationship with language, and even though I dreamed of it, I never seriously believed I could become a published writer. Silence was the language I was most comfortable speaking while growing up.
I was born in 1975 in Jakarta to Chinese parents. Routinely targeted as scapegoats, we were forbidden to speak Chinese or embrace any part of our heritage. Instead, we were forced to speak Indonesian, the same tongue used by the government and the masses to denounce us. I learned from early on that language could be used to oppress and discriminate and the only way I knew how to handle it was to withdraw into silence. Being painfully shy did not help. In fact, I was so quiet that for a long time my fourth grade teacher thought I was mute.
At sixteen, I left my family and moved to the States. I barely spoke English. The challenges of learning a new language and living in a new country brought all my insecurity to the forefront. I was ashamed of my accent. I remember sweating with apprehension while I waited in line to order at McDonald's. My uneasy affair with language continued after I enrolled at Stanford two years later (to this day, I believe they admitted me by mistake). Feeling inferior to all the brilliant students who had spoken English all their lives, I chose to major in Computer Science and stay away from classes that required me to speak. Yet something else happened to me in college. Reading fiction on the sly, I began to take comfort in the written word, and to discern avenues in English where my own native tongue had failed to afford me. I worked as a software engineer after graduation, but I was always reading and writing. I persisted, despite my doubts, and my novel is the result of that labor.
Of Bees and Mist is a literary fantasy about three generations of women in two families. The world they inhabit is entirely imagined, woven from customs and mythologies I have had the privilege of encountering. The book is my attempt to give words to the daydreams that saturated the silences of my childhood, and to show that language-more than an instrument of division-can also embrace and emancipate.
Sincerely,
Erick
