I'm really excited about this book and the fact that we're reading Asian fiction.  I wish we could read the first few pages right away!

Thank you, Barnes & Noble - this is wonderful!  Can't wait!:smileyhappy:

Re: About Of Bees and Mist and Erick Setiawan

I did some searching to try & find some information on the author & this as all I could locate for now:

Born in Jakarta to Chinese parents, Setiawan grew up surrounded by gifted storytellers and became engrossed by the complex system of beliefs, superstitions, and folklore that encompassed both the Chinese and Indonesian cultures. At sixteen he moved to the United States, where he earned a degree in Computer Science at Stanford University. OF BEES AND MIST is rooted in Setiawan’s experiences and is an amalgamation of the cultural influences in his life. Setiawan currently resides in San Francisco, CA.

I don't know if anybody here has paid any attention to details in a literary text and their matter to the narrative construction. Before discussions officialy start a purpose/challenge one thing to be solved only when discussions finally start. "What are the relations of bees and the magical or superstitional atmosphere of the book?"

Just think of it but don't answer until discussions are open, please.

I unsuccessfully tried to find some information about the author. Nothing is still on the internet except some release information or covers of the book. Hope we have more information about the author and his previous career and influences in literature.

Re: About Of Bees and Mist and Erick Setiawan

This sounds like another book that it will be hard to put down. I really like the first read club because these are books I might not pick out but I just love them when I get them. I can't ever figure out why I don't pick these books out on my own.

Re: About Of Bees and Mist and Erick Setiawan

I have owned Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell on cd's for a long time. In the past I listened to about a third of them (i think there must be 16 or so) as we drove back and forth from ct to fl. now that we are planning our trip back up north, i am inspired to start them all over again. It was really good but it was hard to have continuity when we didn't listen consistently. We will try to do better this time!

I am really looking forward to this First Look book, also.

I've had Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell since it was first published, but never got around to reading it. I dug it out this afternoon. This seems like the perfect time to read it. And, it will keep me occupied until Bees and Mist arrives.

Re: About Of Bees and Mist and Erick Setiawan

I have to laugh.  I get all excited about the new First Look book and before it's even here, I've accumulated all of these other "leads" from people about great books they mention here.  So many books, so little time...

This, like Katherine's book, sounds very inviting!  Hoping to get picked and find out soon!   Like a great mystery, the suspense is wonderful...and terrible!

I'm in the same boat.  Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell has been sitting on my TBR pile FOREVER and something always seemed to supplant it.  Good to know this is in the same vein.  Can't wait to read Bees and Mist.  I just love the title!

Can anyone explain why there are different covers here and there?  Seems like it would be more costly than selecting just one!  And our culture is so similar to the UK, so it seems that it wouldn't come from a cultural difference type of thing.

Re: About Of Bees and Mist and Erick Setiawan

I think I like the UK cover better.  BUT, perhaps it looks more like a YA book there.  The US cover seems more 'adult.'  The flowery vine motif isn't really my thing, but mixed with the interesting color combination on background and typeface it's more attention grabbing.  It surely doesn't give ANYTHING about the book away!

My book club is taking a summer break; it's time to encounter a genre I haven't paid particular attention to in the past.

Re: About Of Bees and Mist and Erick Setiawan

I was trying to find out some more information on the author. He looks so young and yet is so accomplished. In the process I found the website for his literary agent.

Then I found something else which a lot of people on Barnes and Noble's site have asked about in the past. Some of you are seeking ways to get your own work published and have inquired how to go about it. On this website they say they are actively seeking new authors. Maybe this is a place to go to get published. They explain how to go about it and what you need to submit to them. It seems like it would be worth a try.

Re: About Of Bees and Mist and Erick Setiawan

I'm jumping on the bandwagon of people who loved Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell  . I'm eagerly awaiting her next book (although who knows when it will come out... the internet doesn't seem too...). If you're waiting, though, she's got a collection of short stories calledLadies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories out that I found most enjoyable. Also, if you're not sure whether you want to commit to Jonathan Strange or not, you might try the short stories first--less of a time investment until you know whether you like the style or not.
