krb2g:
Thanks! You are the first person (that I can remember) hearing from about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo . It is currently in my TBR pile. It is sad about the author.

The author apparently had 10 books planned, but died shortly after turning in the first three manuscripts. If the other two are as good as the first, they will definitely be worth reading too...

I think I signed up for just about all of them. I like Thomas Nelson, Bostick Communications, Shelf Awareness and Library Thing.
Bostick sends me emails almost daily with a new book and you just reply to the email with your address and then they'll mail you the book.
Shelf Awareness sends and email everyday and some of the ads on there will say "click here for a review copy".
Thomas Nelson lets you review one book at a time. There's no specific due date for the reviews, you just can't get a new book till you've posted the review for the one you have (This one does require you have a blog, they want a link to the review on your blog as well as the permalink for the review on a bookstore site, like B&N or amazon).
Library Thing actually has two giveaway sections, the first is Early Reviewers which is monthly then they have member giveaways which aren't always new books, sometimes people just get rid of a bunch of their books.
There's also Goodreads. They have a giveaway program, but you seem to have to be pretty active on their site to win.
And then the Book Divas is a nice group, though it can be a little confusing. They'll post a message when new books are avaialble and then its first come first serve, you send a PM listing 3 -5 books you'd like. You don't get any kind of confirmation, if in a few days you have a book sitting at your door step you know you were choosen... Then you just PM Melissa when you've finished your review. That one they do have a 30-day due date, but I think they're a little flexible if you let them know you're having trouble with the deadline.
There are also sites that do monthly giveaways they are: Writer's Space, Fresh Fiction, and BookLoons You have to watch out with bookloons, they repeat some of the writer's space contests, and if you enter twice you are disqualified...
Sorry this one got so long, I just love sharing free stuff!!!
Thanks so much!! I have tried to find other outlets ( or would that be in-lets
) for books and reviewing, but have not had much luck in finding.
Thanks again.

Hi I loved The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo also and my sneaky friend just ordered his copy of the next one from Amazon UK so we should be reading it very soon. Can't wait.
It is very sad about the author and I found out that there were supposed to be a series of at least 10 books and there were seven unfinished manuscripts left and the author's family doesn't want them published by someone else so that's sad too.

I've enjoyed everyone's comments on their reading habits. I live on a lake and I love reading outside sitting on my wooden swing with a cup of coffee. I like it perfectly quiet while I read. In the winter I sit in my mother's old wingback chair with a big ottoman for my feet. Reading is a huge part of my life now that I'm retired and the kids all have their own families. There is nothing I'd rather do than read, except be with my grandchildren. I also use alot of reading products from Levenger.com. They have the most wonderful reading tools and paper products. I love to highlight ni my books and take notes and bookmark pages and quotes. I guess I study a book as I read it.
I just finished The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. It was wonderful, I highly recommend it. Also The Last Dickens by Matthew Pearl. Yvonne

I hope you can enter. I'm not sure if what's avaialble is anything you would like, but both sites have new giveaways posted all of the time.

Thanks Jennifer for your attention. I tried both of them but think nothing is so practical and brilliant as B&N First Look. Here in Brazil a program for changing books has been recently created and think it'll be great to change some repeated books by others I don't have yet.
I'll explore more the websites you sent me. I subscribed both and joined some communities in goodreads.

I read Loving Frank a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it; it's a story that will stick to me for quite some time. Let me know what you think of it when you're finished!

I keep joking that even if I read a book a day for the rest of my life I will never ever finish my wish list because I keep adding to it. Now if I were to stop adding right now I could probably clear it out in a few years!!!
You took the words right from my fingertips, Jennmarie. I keep adding to my wish list on a daily basis and already feel as if I need to retire, just so I can read the pile that's accumulating in my room.

I'm currently reading The King's Grace by Anne Easter Smith (I heard her speak a couple of weeks ago; she is fantastic). I'm not making much headway though as I seem to be a little bit obsessed with the FL board at the moment. ![]()

Book Crossing is a wonderful idea. I used to give my books away through it while traveling; having the book crossing label on a book makes people less afraid to pick it up. I often left books in small inns, on buses, or on trains. Now I use kindle when I travel; just loaded it up with about twenty free classics. For my book clubs I still use paper based books because the only problem I have with kindle is the fact that the notes I enter are based on locations and not page numbers. This is because one can choose the font size which in turn would change the page number.
And then there are the books I purchase during my travels, the ones that make my suitcase feel like a ton of bricks. Since they are rather limited in scope (ie: eight memoirs from Guernsey in the Channel Islands or five accounts of the Donner Party in Truckee, California) the only solution for those is ... building another bookcase.
krb2g wrote:Jersey Angel,
The book crossing website is: http://www.bookcrossing.com/. Like I said, I can't often bear to part with a book, so I don't use it a lot, but I think it's a really neat idea.
JerseyAngel wrote:No, the ones I would give up, I wouldn't care if I got back or not. Since I just don't have the room, I would rather pass them on to someone else that could enjoy them. I've never heard of the book crossing thing... are there websites for that? Thanks!!

I know how to link directly to the first unread (or NEW) message in a thread, but once you're on that page (and have read the messages that are NEW to you) is there a way to go directly to the next NEW message without clicking on either the "back" button or the link to the FL board that lives above the posting area?
Thank you in advance for your help!

My experience has been that when there are new posts in a thread, the link to the thread is in bold. Once I have read through all the new posts, the link is no longer bold. When there are new posts again, the link goes bold again & when I click on it, it automatically takes me the next newest post. No scrolling through the older posts.

LOL.... Yeah, I know what you mean. I usually get 1 new book a day, sometimes 2. Then there's always the FOTL Book sale on the 3rd Friday of the month, plus it's garage sale season.... I think I need to quit taking on ARC's for a while and whittle down just what I have sitting here right now (With the acceptions of OBAM, of course)! 20 books in 35 days... I can do it :-)

I really haven't found a place that I love to read. Most of my reading is done in my bed because right now it's my one quiet place that I can shut the door and zone out. I'm also going to have my Ipod on and a cold Dr. Pepper at my side. If I'm not in my bed, I'm on the couch curled up at one of the corners reading away with the radio or tv on just to give me some background noise.

Kaye, when you read New Moon, STICK TO IT! I will admit it's a little boring and whatnot, but Eclipse is SOO good! Breaking Dawn is my favorite of the whole series. not sure why exactly, but it is. so just be sure to stick to New Moon if you start it and read Eclipse.

WH is one of the most wonderful books in existence; the best parts are Emily Bronte's description of the Yorkshire countryside (beautiful) and Heathcliff's over-riding desire to control everything and have his revenge.

I read and knit and dance. Compulsively feel yarn. Consume books. Darn tights. Drink too much caffiene. All that good stuff.
