Re: What are you reading?

I also have to read this. It does sound pretty good. It's a little ways down in my TBR pile, but I think I'll be there in a few weeks.

Re: Reading preferences

I really like to read on the train, but since I don't take the train that often the next best place is the bathtub or the couch in the family room covered up with my quilt.

I usually just have a coke or some water when I read, and I don't usually have snacks sitting by (I'm a big girl so they distract me from the task at hand :-P).

Re: Reading preferences & online bookswapping sites

gl,

I LOVE paperbackswap.com... I've been unemployed for quite a while, and I am currently going to school full time. So my $ is tight. BF gives me some extra, but since it's hard to swap yarn I usually buy knitting stuff.

Plus I've found lots of sites that send you review copies, as well as book contest sites... It's a great way to keep up on my reading habit without having to wait till someone I know gets it and then try to borrow it.

I also tend to find garage sales, a few weeks ago I got 9 books for $5! Even with my limited cash flow I couldn't pass that one up.

Re: Reading preferences

I've not read many U.S. History books, but I did pick up Founding Mothers by Cokie Roberts. I'm about halfway through it. I just keep picking up other things, but I am liking it so far.

I think it's amazing to see what these women accomplished given their roles and social staus at the time. I was really turned on to finding information about Abigail Adams after watching the HBO series John Adams, and this book just happened to be the first one I found.

Re: anticipation

Vivico,

I too have noticed the trailer phenomenon. Over the weekend I saw two different trailers on TV! One was for the new James Patterson book and I can't remember what the other one was. But I think it's a good idea.

I hope book trailers are here to stay!

Re: Reading preferences

Ok, I'm gonna have to stop reading this thread. My TBR books have doubled since I started this thread... I guess that's what I get for being involved in a book group huh? LOL

I keep joking that even if I read a book a day for the rest of my life I will never ever finish my wish list because I keep adding to it. Now if I were to stop adding right now I could probably clear it out in a few years!!!

Re: Community Room

Jersey,

I use paperbackswap all the time. I LOVE it. You get two "free" credits when you post your first 10 books. Then after that it's a credit per book. They also have audio books (which are two credits). I happen to like the wish list and the reminder list, and they also let you add notes to the books that you put on your lists. I've looked at bookmooch but I was already a paperbackswap member so I didn't joing there.

If you're just looking to get rid of some books LibraryThing has a member giveaway program. I don't think you get anything in return, but it's a good way to clear off your shelves.

Also there' bookcrossing where you can print a label for your book then just leave it somewhere, in hopes that when someone picks it up they will go the the site and then leave it someplace else when they are done. It's just a way to track the books you've gotten rid of.

Hope I didn't give you too many options...

Re: Community Room

I've been working on theEarth Children's Series forever. I've read Clan of the Cave Bears twice, I read Valley of the Horses and I'm in the middle of Mamoth Hunter, but they seem to be getting a little heavy on the sex thing, not that I'm against it, I just think it's getting a little overdone. But I do love the series (Hated the movie though, and I like Darryl Hannah....) I have Plains of Passage and just recently picked up Shelters of Stone at Half-Price Books. Not that I'm ready to read it, but I wish the next one would come out... She's been working on it forever!

Re: Community Room

I loved the Clan of the Cave Bear. I remember when it was first published, I was amazed to find out that was her very first novel.

I never read her later novels. There are so many books to read, I find I move on and if the author takes a really long time to write the next in a series, I don't find myself rushing to read itUsually by then I've moved on to so many other books and series.

Someone mentioned the Twilight series, I never cared for Vampire books.

Just not my interest. My favorites are Mysteries, True Crime, and some books that may be intended for children, such as Neil Gaiman who wrote "The Graveyard Book", "Coraline",

"Neverwhere" and some more. Harry Potter series were really good, I read all of them.

When I was younger I read mostly Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Robin Cook Novels.

I've since discovered tons more authors that interest me, it must come with age

I read True Crime only when I'm in the mood for it and don't have anything else around at the moment.

Someone asked where is your favorite place to read, I like to read in bed or on the couch.

I'm not a sitting readerReading also helps me sleep, but also reading in bed allows my cat

Charlie to join meAnyone else who has cats find that when they're in bed with you, they start to drool?I get slobbered with this drool dripping from his mouth, and it only happens when he's in bed with me and doing his kneading and rubbingOne time I didn't see it, and I gave him a nice Peck on his cheek/mouth and YUCK! I had drool stuck on my lips.

Good Lord, is he turned on??  Perhaps this is the same as when the dog licks your face with love and more love

Anyway, I hope I'll be joining the group. This is my first time

I'm a night owl and now it's bedtime for me and mr drool

Goodnight everyone.

My favorite place to read is the porch! Of course this is difficult in a New England winter so I have to make due with the couch then!:smileywink: I do like some soft music in the background. Either way it's me with my pup BJ next to me while I'm reading. And speaking of reading I just got finished with The Gargoyle  by Andrew Davidson. It was a bit bizzare at the start, but turned out to be a great read... Anyone else read this yet?

Hi Quzygirl, and welcome to this great community of literature lovers.
I did read the Gargoyle and was very impressed by the dark love story. The writing was excellent and you couldn't help but want to know the characters better. I really enjoyed it and recommend it. If you liked that you might try MJ Rose her

I read Founding Mothers some years back.  I thought it was a good book.  A few weeks back our local play house did the Musical  1776.  The entire play took place in the Continental Congress with all the delegates and their debates.  It was very good.

I would love to know the other sites that send ARC for reviews, as well as the book contest sites.  I love reading, but sometimes find it difficult to pick out something.  I throughly enjoy having someone else to throw a book at me and tell me to read it!

Re: What are you reading?

Last night I heard Michael Perry discuss and read from his new book Coop: A Year of  Poultry, Pigs and Parenting.  Very fun.  Came right home and put my name on the list for the book at the library.  I greatly enjoyed his other 2 books; Population 485: Meeting Your Neighbors One Siren at a Time and Truck: A Love Story.

Cathy,

I am about half way through Twilight and while I'm enjoying the story line, the teen age angst is a bit much for me :smileywink:

I'm sure that I would have loved it 30-40 years ago.  Oh my...that makes me feel old!

I'll let you know if I've changed my mind when I finish. Will you go on to the next book in the series?

I haven't decided whether to go on or not. I find the girl so annoying that I am vascilating. The story is kind of interesting, the writing is not really very good, but I did want to find out what happened to her. However, I'm losing even that desire.  Some of the characters I find interesting, which makes me want to continue.
