A positive review overall (a 4 out of 5). A good thought provoking read, but not really a novel.

This was my first, and I enjoyed the experience!  Thanks, B & N, and Colson Whitehead.

Re: Post Your Reviews of the Book

Hi,

I have to say that I am enjoying this book quite a bit! It is well written, the characters are distinct and well developed and the setting and description is sufficient - and not over done - to get me into the scenes immediately!  I give it an A!!

I have only one complaint - I like to read and read quite a bit during the course of the year.  I read on airplanes and before bed most times and because of that I prefer shorter chapters - so that I can sit down and read a full chapter - fall asleep - and then do it again the next night.  These chapters were so long - it was difficult to find time to tackle a full chapter.  I hate to get started on a chapter and then set it down only to pick it up and forget what the heck is going on....That's my only complaint - rather minor since the points of praise I mentioned above are really the main components of a good novel and story.

Thanks for picking a good one!!

Susan

Re: Post Your Reviews of the Book

I wasn't sure at first that I would like this book, but as I read I began to see what a great writer Mr Whitehead is. The book flowed seamlessly which made for an easy read. I loved his characters, especially Benji. Yvonne

I could not get the link to post here. But I did post a review.

Even though the book was not my favorite, I have enjoyed this experience.

I appreciate getting to read these advance copies.

Thayer,

I really liked your review.  I think it did the book great justice and got your point across beautifully.  That's the kind of review I find very helpful when I'm looking for a book.

Re: Post Your Reviews of the Book

I wanted so much to love Colson Whitehead's newest novel, Sag Harbor.  I began enthusiastically reading my ARC just as soon as it arrived.  Unfortunately, I never really got into this novel.  Perhaps I had unrealistic expectations or perhaps it's because I couldn't identify with any of the characters or the setting of this novel.  I certainly have nothing in common with any of the characters, incidents, or locations he writes about.  Perhaps I am not part of the target audience for which this novel is intended. For whatever reason, the novel didn't work for me.  For brief moments, as I was drawn into one of Benji's many narratives, trying my best to invision those situations as they were described, I would more often than not find myself jolted out of the novel as the story line suddenly shifted without explanation or direction. I felt very out of touch most of the time, trying to figure out what was meant by something said or done by one of the characters. By the time I finished the novel, I was more confused and disappointed than anything.  I never saw even a glimmer of the humor the other readers indicate they found. For me, the few beautifully written descriptive passages this novel contains are not enough to make it stand on it's own.  I can't say I would ever reread this book or recommend it to any of my friends.
