Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

Mmmm, I "see" you're already beyond chapter 6 :smileywink:.   They're calling for rain tomorrow and I am thinking that's a sign that I'm meant to hunker down on the couch with The Physick Book!  I just don't want to put it down!

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

Only through the "Interlude" <grin> Now, though stopped in my reading, I am looking up more sites on the Salem Witch Trials. We have rain coming tomorrow as well, but I really want to keep reading with the schedule with this book. I get to speculate that way. hahahaha

I am treating the "Interlude" between chapters 6 and 7 as part of the first week simply because the schedule says chapter 7 begins the second week. I hope I am right! :smileyvery-happy:

I received my book last night after dinner.  Will be trying hard to be ready to start the discussion on Monday.  I have a question about the schedule.  Week one is Chapters 1-6.  What about the Interlude.  Is that part of Week One, or does it go into Week 2?  I am really excited about this book.

Yes! Because the "Interlude" sections aren't numbered like the chapters are, they are treated (in the schedule) as if they are a part of their preceding chapters. Thanks for the question. I'll clarify that on the Schedule thread, too!

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

II too cannot put the book down. Last nite in bed it was "I will only read one more page". one page became one chapter, then another, then one more page, no another chapter. Love the cover, it adds so much to the book.  I never read the Crucible in high school although I remember my high school lit teacher making us go and sit thru the dress rehearsal of the play. Not sure if that was because he felt we wouldn't actually read the book (we were really into Cliff Notes) or because the lead in the play was one of his students and he felt we would pay better attention if we saw it rather than read it.  I don't think any play, no matter how well done, can replace the book it was adapted from.

Will be out of town until April 1, but hoping to get my copy before I leave Saturday.  Should be a great "escape" book for the plane.

Not sure if it is the same Dr. Physick, but there is also a Physick (Emlen) mansion in Cape May.  Coincidence or common name?!  If you ever go, it's an interesting tour.

Getting anxious...!

I've been to the Physick mansion many times. Jo

You are certainly right!  It's a must-keep-reading book!  I myself have said: Just until I finish this chapter.....And it turns out to be 100 pages later.....:-)

This book is awesome!  I love history and have always had a more than passing interest in the Salem Witch Trials.  Can't wait to finish.

Yes, we saw Liam Neeson and Laura Linney on Broadway a few years ago -- amazing, powerful performances, I thought it was very moving.

I saw it at a local theatre and it was very powerful and captivating.  Jo

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

Hi Bridget, Isn't it funny how we can often overlook a word until it has specific meaning? Then it stand out like a sore thumb. :smileyhappy:

I commend you for choosing the noble and trying occupation of teaching. It's awesome that you are introducing your kids to the world of historical fiction. I think that in this day & age and more than ever, kids need to be encouraged to read real books. I'm sure your efforts will help lay a solid foundation for a future passion.

I didn't opt in for the Sag Harbour First Look as I didn't think it would hold my interest. Judging from your note, it appears that I made a wise decision. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

Good Morning,

It appears that Dr. Emlen Physick was the grandson of the Dr. (Philip Syng) Physick that I mentioned. Interesting that Emlen completed his medical training to follow family tradition but never practiced. Their mansion is really neat! Would love to take a tour someday....

Have a safe and productive trip!

questions for the author

I really enjoy what I've read so far and plan to recommend the book to friends - I have been having a very hard time keeping to the 6 chapter/week limit.  Thank you for writing the book, generously partnering with Barnes & Noble in this First Look Book Club, and taking the time to answer questions.  This is wonderful!

Personal link - Elizabeth Proctor and Elizabeth Howe

I'm not that familiar with the people directly involved in the Salem witch trials and am very curious as to how your family's link to Elizabeth Proctor and Elizabeth Howe directly affected your own childhood and life.  Did you grow up in the New England area or did you move there during your college and graduate school years?  Are there family stories that you'd be willing to share with the group?

Have you always been interested in the period of the witch trials, in part because of the family history?

Inspiration for the novel

Are you fond of fantasy novels and magic? How did you get the idea for your story? How did you come up with characters of Deliverance and Mercy?

Is there a particular house that inspired the description of Sophia's cottage in Marblehead?  The image of the house, its furnishings and the type of life that they had to live there was fascinating.

Re: questions for the author

Okay... got the book Friday... Started it Monday morning... finished it in one sitting.

Guess that shows my opinion of it!!

I can't wait untill the discussion gets to the end!!! I have a million things to say about the Scooby-Doo style ending (And we pull the mask off and _____ is really ____!). But I don't want to spoil it for anyone so I'll wait...

One thing I will say is that I HATED the extra panel on the cover. It was so awkward to hold (the book was thick and tightly bound as it was!) and I spent a lot of time checking between chapters to make sure I wasn't creasing it beyond repair.  I've reviewed a lot of ARCs and this is only the second with the extra cover-flap. Seriously people- it's a waste of a tree. If I wasn't so spastic about my books I'd have cut it off back in chapter three.

/rant off =)

I am hoping to receive my copy soon.  I LOVED The Crucible...it has been a long time since I have read it.  I need to pick it up again.

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

I got this one and just couldn't put it down until I finished it.  What a great book choice for the book club- I can't wait to hear what other people think of The Physick Book.  After three rough choices from my perspective, Sag Harbor and The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane have really redeemed the First Look program (for me at least!)

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

I like the book so far but am getting a little bit nervous it is going to turn out to be a harlequin romance type story, just written with a bit more to the plot and character development.  I hope I am wrong, but i do have to admit that I know several people in my immediate circle who would adore it if it does.
