Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

I have really enjoyed this book about the Salem witchcraft trials .  The is just as good as the lasted First book.  I couldn't put the book down the more I read the more I couldn't wait to finish it.  Now that I have more time off now that I just got laid off.  I am going to start the book over so that I can write a review of it for another great pick for First book.

This was a wonderful book that I enjoyed immensely.  I plan on writing a more detailed review as soon as I get the chance.

I like the book so far but am getting a little bit nervous it is going to turn out to be a harlequin romance type story, just written with a bit more to the plot and character development.  I hope I am wrong, but i do have to admit that I know several people in my immediate circle who would adore it if it does.

Don't worry too much. I really dislike harlequin style books, and I loved this one. I didn't feel that they took the romance too far... and it certainly wasn't trashy or trite. There is romance there, but it deffinetly takes back seat to the storyline.

But the romance is also very integral to the storyline.  Jo

Maria,

This is my favorite of the First Look choices so far.  It seems as though the book club is more active than the ones past. Is this just my perception or would you, as administrator, agree with this assessment?

Are the same number of books given out each time? Perhaps there are more readers in this particular book club?

Or do you think it might be the mix of readers?  Or that the book really spoke more strongly to us as a group?

Thanks!
GL

There definitely seems to be more interest in this book by the staggering number of posts already.
I agree that this is my favorite so far as well. It's just really well written fiction with a great many facts thrown in, enough history to keep those people satisfied, the characters are really good and it has a hint of fantasy so I think it may appeal to a greater number of readers because of that wide scope.

I certainly agree with those that think this is the best book of the arc's we have received.

One word, one sentence, one paragraph does not explain this sensational novel. Its drama at its best, romance  that meanders about but doesn't overwhelm the story. Suspense that lurks at the edges and history that most people relish to know about. It shows the harshness that was shown women if a word was uttered concerning witchcraft.  The Author definitely knows her craft to a "T" and practices it well.

Response of readers to PBDD

I know that there has definitely been more talk on the boards than in the past.  Although this has been an enjoyable book, I think the readers' response has been so active also because before the ARC's were even distributed there was the announcement that nonparticipating readers aren't getting books.  Because of that, there was much talk about what causes people to not comment (don't want to be repetitive, nervous, not sure HOW to post).

I know that there were probably a lot of people in the past who just got the books without an intention to post or review. That totally wasn't in the spirit of the authors and Barnes and Noble sharing these books with us.  I think we readers are being much more conscientious and less nervous about posting.

Everyman (thank you so much by the way) explained to me how to make new posts and change the subject because it seemed it was hit or miss before for whether or not I could get it to post. On top of that, I then discovered that you have to sign in in order to post.  While I know that sounds obvious, I didn't realize that when you get a notice in your email that there are new messages and you click on the message, that doesn't sign you in.  Many times I would directly pull up the website and sign in.  Then I could post.  Sometimes I would enter thru email and I couldn't post.  I suppose you could say that I am not computer savvy because it took me this long to figure that out!! LOL  The point I was trying to make is that in the past, if I couldn't post I just gave up.  But having the warning from the moderator that if we don't post we won't get to participate gave me much more incentive to figure out how to do it.

Sorry this is so long guys.  But if anyone out there still doesn't know how to add their comments just ask for help.  There are a lot of very helpful readers in this group.  Good luck!!

Good points gringorn!  I hardly posted with Sag Harbor because I was new and overwhelmed and intimidated. :smileysad: This time around with TPBODD I am a posting maniac, nut, fool, <ahem> participant. :smileyhappy: Sorry, it took me a minute there to find the right word!!! :smileywink: I now over use emoticons and should be charged with exclamation abuse as well!!!!!!  See!!!!!! :smileytongue: But I am having a great time posting and interacting. :smileyvery-happy: The PM option is nice, too.

I think you are right about "the announcement" regarding nonparticipating readers not getting ARCs in the future.  Tho that is not me this time, I recently told an interested friend of mine who wants to sign up for the next FL that unless she's going to have the time or make the time to participate that it would be her last First Look!!!  I, too, love that all you have to do if you don't get how to do somerhing is put it out there and so many people are willing to help and encourage.  I even got a crystal ball reading early on from VermontCozy correctly predicting the arrival of my copy of TPBODD!!!:smileywink:

I also think TPBODD is a better book - at least for me.  No offense to Colson Whitehead.  I read and even liked Sag Harbor but the type of book it was and the content (as well as it being my first FL) was just different and didn't "brew up" :smileytongue: as much as this one.

And no worry about long posts.  I have been known to go on and on myself sometimes...

and there are others...we are not the only 2!!!!!!!:smileywink::smileytongue::smileyvery-happy:

Re: Response of readers to PBDD

I was really touched by your letter to all who have contributed to TPBODD.I have contributed in last two which were the first,FL book clubs for me.Unfortunately I have not been able to read this one,and I am hoping to start the book as  soon as I can .Giving people the confidence to post is a hugh part of this opportunity that BN has given us.I am sure your post is appreciated by all.I just wanted you to know how I feel.Eman is the "Bear of the Boards..he is a quite helpful..in many aspects..Knowing he will read this, he is appreciated.  ,I am sure you are looking forward to the next"present" from BN..They seem to pick such wonderful authors, each so different, each so talented..Vtc

Yes, we saw Liam Neeson and Laura Linney on Broadway a few years ago -- amazing, powerful performances, I thought it was very moving.

I saw it at a local theatre and it was very powerful and captivating.  Jo

I just read it for the first time last night...and was blown away!  I can ony imagine what it would be like to experience it live.

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

Dear Katherine and fellow F.L. Reader Team:

At the start of opening the package I received, I was immediately smiling at the feel of the cover of the book; the texture, look of mystery, my instant bookmark....I was tickled!

I snuck away to my bedroom and enjoyed my escape. I felt as if I was reading a history book, with an added bonus of some unfolding story telling. I kept an open mind, trying not to over analyze the contents of each chapter. I did however, have to re-read the previous paragraphs at times, while I was trying to identify the women. Overall, I must say BRAVO!

I travelled abroad and took a history class in London on Witchcraft. I think the book puts

it in a much better perspective for me now.

Mrs. Howe, please write another book. Your insight, is beyond in years. I think you have an

esoteric quality that you've tapped into within your family heritage....there is more to 'you' in your character (and as an author) than your character was even willing to acknowledge.

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

After I calmed down from the drama of receiving my "ARC" since the brown truck driver and I couldn't seem to connect very well those first few days that it was in my city. So I had gotten really upset with UPS. But finally I canceled all appointments and stayed home and got my book! That was really special when I opened the package and the unusual book awaited me in the unigue design of the cover and bookmark.

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

I read this book when it first came out because I was fascinated with Witches.  I really liked it.  It kept going back and forth through time.  It became a little like fantasy to me toward the end of the book.  It almost seemed like the author wasn't exactly sure where to go with the story.  It's a good book none the less and a fast read.
