Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

I'm looking forward to this one.  The history of House at Riverton with the digging into the family aspect like The Monsters of Templeton.  I wasn't a big fan of Riverton, but I loved Monsters so there's hope for this one!

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

The book sounds fascinating and I can't wait to read the comments from everyone.  I think it'll be particularly interesting with descendants of survivors of the Salem witch trials on in the group.

I've been to Salem and Marblehead a few times, I can't wait!

I really hope I get into the group.

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

This book is right up my alley!  I was disappoined with the 2 previous ones, but I absolutely can't wait to get this one! I just signed up today as I have had internet issues, that are hoopefully resolved.

I love Salem and have been fascinated with this since I was a kid growing up in Mass.!

It is a really good idea to revisit "The Crucible".  It has been YEARS for me, too!  It seems to me that we are all a lot more excited about this book than we have been the last few!:smileywink:
Have to also agree with the re-reading of "The Crucible" !  Many years for me as well.  Better yet, I think I will have my English class red it as well!  ( they are a Special Needs class and don't usually get to read these types of books. Til this year! We have read "To Kill a Mockingbird", "Of Mice and Men" and finished today "All Quiet on the Western Front" abridged)

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

I hope this question doesn't make me sound like a goofball :smileytongue: but I was wondering if anyone else was under the misconception that the word Physick (in the title) was related to psychic?

I came across this same word in one of Stephanie Barron's Jane Austen mysteries the other night. The doctor performed a physick (examination) on the unfortunate murder victim. After a little investigation, I discovered that the work is actually very old and related to medicine. Curious enough, according to wikipedia, there was actually a Dr. Physick who is deemed to be the father of modern surgery. He sounds a little spooky to me though.  :smileysurprised:

Anyway, now my curiosity is really piqued. I am wondering if Deliverence Dane will turn out to be a medicine woman of eldertimes and be persecuted from other's lack of understanding in her skills. I can't wait to get the book & satisfy my curiosity. :smileyhappy:

Oh I think I am going to like this one. I too had thought about skipping a session because there really hasn't been much substance to the last couple of books. But the historical aspect of this one got my attention and i am in for another round of good reading.

I too had thought about skipping one even though most of the First Looks have been pretty good.  Plus on top of that, I find that reading them takes me out of my "comfort zone" of authors and subjects.

You described my thoughts exactly Ebony.
By far the most enjoyable of all the reads are the lively discussions and points of view that I didn't have and made me think twice, and the generous time given by the authors to talk to us.

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

Will be out of town until April 1, but hoping to get my copy before I leave Saturday.  Should be a great "escape" book for the plane.

Not sure if it is the same Dr. Physick, but there is also a Physick (Emlen) mansion in Cape May.  Coincidence or common name?!  If you ever go, it's an interesting tour.

Hi TRJ4SQ,

I wasn't sure what it meant either, but like you, I recently came across it in a book.  I am reading some historical fiction with a group of my fifth graders, and in our book there is a Pequot medicine woman who makes "physicks" for the ill people of their village; in this book, at least, physicks seems to mean medicines.  It mentions all kinds of herbal remedies.  My students think they are practically medical experts!

I cannot wait to start this book; I just got it today and even the cover has me excited!  I am a little relieved to hear a few people say that they had trouble getting through Sag Harbor.  It was my first First Look and I almost felt guilty for not thoroughly enjoying it.  I am hoping that The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane will hold my interest a little better.  I'm going to go start it now :smileyhappy:

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

I really tend to stay in my comfort zone with what I read, like I've seen other readers mention here. Previous first looks have taken me way out of my zone, so I put those books down. I'm so glad this book was offered. I really have to credit Ms. Howe for broading the boundaries of my zone! I don't want to put the book down! I cannot wait for the formal disscussions to begin, curious to see if others are piecing things together like I am! Or if I am way off!

I got my copy yesterday - the book looks great! I started last night and can't wait until our discussion begins.

Will we weave  The Crucible in the discussions?  Will look for it today.

I think that is part of the reason I do like the FL books; they do take me away from what I would typically choose to read.  I haven't particularly liked the other two I have read, however I did fully read them.

I hope mine is waiting for me at home today!

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

I've never actually read The Crucible (how did I make it through high school without that?) but after all of these suggestions to read it as a companion to Physick Book, I will now be adding it to my to-be-read pile.

Thanks!

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

I received my book last night after dinner.  Will be trying hard to be ready to start the discussion on Monday.  I have a question about the schedule.  Week one is Chapters 1-6.  What about the Interlude.  Is that part of Week One, or does it go into Week 2?  I am really excited about this book.

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

I am treating the "Interlude" between chapters 6 and 7 as part of the first week simply because the schedule says chapter 7 begins the second week. I hope I am right! :smileyvery-happy:

Re: About The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane & Katherine Howe

I got my copy a couple of nights ago and haven't been able to put it down. I even really like the cover. Somehow it adds to the ambiance of the book. A lot of people mention that the books in the first read club are out of their comfort zone. Me too. That's why I like it so much. I have a tendancy to stay too much in my zone-this is a safe way to venture out.

Your not alone, Samantha!  I've never read The Crucible either, but have no added it to my wish list!  At the rate I'm going, I may be able to fit it in before the discussion ends.  I just won't want to put Physick Book down!
