Another book on the subject of witches and witch hunts

Has anyone read THE WITCH'S TRINITY by Erika Mailman? It's another recent book on this subject.  It is a short read but I found it quite chilling. It demonstrated how quickly a community can look to make people scapegoats for misfortune.  It takes place in a small German village in the 1500's. Might make a nice companion read for PHYSICK.

When did you get your book?

I think everyone is anticipating when their book will arrive so. I think maybe it could be helpful if when you get your book to post when you got your confirmation, where you live, and who delivered it (so the rest of us know which delivery person to butter up... LOL) It's just a thought.

I know I can't wait to get my copy, and I got my mom to sign up, so now she's chomping at the bit to get hers also... If we lived closer (and my dogs didn't aggrivate her asthma) we'd probably just share a copy, but 500 miles is a long distance to try to share a book!!!

Re: Community Room

[ Edited ]

I've read both The Dante Club and The Poe Shadow by Matthew Pearl.  Of the two, I preferred The Dante Club the most.  I do enjoy historical fiction and the feeling of "hey, this COULD have happened this way...REALLY!".  LOL  Something about picturing Oliver Wendell Holmes et al solving a murder mystery was just enjoyable reading for me...or someone digging into the reason Edgar Allan Poe died...excellent stuff (Pearl's continued digging into Poe's death has actually unearthed evidence that may solve the mystery!).  I found Pearl's writing to be realistic of the time the stories are set but not stuffy.  I will definitely be getting his newest regardless of reviews (I never listen to those things because what one person likes someone else doesn't and vice-versa...it's the diversity that makes this world great!)

Oh, and both my girls read both books and enjoyed them.  For me, anything that gets my daughters to read is well worth reading myself! :smileywink:

It doesn't spoil anything so I think it is OK but if it is not OK to put this here, someone let me know. (and sorry)

Re: More on the Salem Witch Trials

I may have to check out that one.

Anyone read A Break With Charity by Ann Rinaldi?  My daughter had to read it when she was in middle school and she gave it to me (because she knows my fascination with witches and witchcraft...don't think me TOO daft when I say I wonder sometimes if I was there at those trials! I promise I'm completely sane.).  Anyway, A Break With Charity gives another perspective on the reason why the witch hunt panic hit in Salem.  A quick, interesting read.

Wow, when you put "Salem Witches" into B & N search you get a LOT of interesting-sounding selections.  I may be in trouble here...

Here's the product page at bn.com - there are 209 ratings and 193 reviews. :smileysurprised:

I read it with my girls when they were in middle school and remember liking it very much.

Re: Community Room

Hi guys! I have a question for those of you who have done all (or most) of the First Look books. Deliverance Dane will be only the second First Look book I've done; I didn't know it existed before! I'm curious about how many other First Look books there have been, and what they were. Anyone happen to know?

Thanks!

Re: Community Room

Hey Kelly!  Look up at the top right hand corner of the thread page and you'll see a box that says "Featured Titles"...it has a picture of our current selection (I believe it's on every page).  In that box is a link saying "More First Look Selections".  When you click it, it will take you to a page that has all the books that have been featured.  You can then click on each book to get to the typical B & N buying page to read the synopsis, reviews and to order the book if you like!  Hope that helps you.

Re: Community Room

After reading some of you talk about these books, I'm rather interested.  However, I'm really, really not interested in reading anything remotely Dan Brown-ish!!!!  Is this in that league?

Thanks!

Re: Community Room

Thanks Deb!

Looks like I missed out on some good ones:-(. The Believers, Songs for the Missing, and The Monsters of Templeton have all been on my TBR list. And I really enjoyed The House at Riverton, after it came out;-).

.

Thanks for the feedback Debs and Cathy.  I'm going to begin with The Dante Club first and move on from there.

Lynda:

I have read and enjoyed The Dante Club. I was looking forward to Matthew Pearl's

next book, The Poe Shadow; however, the reviews were not too good. I don't usually

let reviews influence my decisions but, in this case it did.:smileysad: As a result, I did not purchase

nor read the Poe Shadow. I just purchased the Last Dickens and have added it to my

TBR pile. It may be some time until I am able to read it - the TBR pile is quite large.:smileyvery-happy:

I would give the Dante Club a read and if you enjoy it, try the others.

Re: Community Room

As someone who thinks Dan Brown is one of the most overrated writers of all time, I can safely say that Dan Brown is not even close to being in Matthew Pearl's league.  Pearl is a much more literary writer whereas Dan Brown is a better screenwriter.

I received my book in the mail this morning.  I live in Virginia and the book was delivered by UPS 2nd day Air.  I got my confirmation on 3/23.

Re: Community Room

Yeah, I made the mistake of reading four of Brown's books in a row.  This was a number of years ago and I needed something light and entertaining.  However, it became very apparent that it was sort of a fill-in-the blank formula and I really felt I'd wasted my time.

I'm going to order a Matthew Pearl book!  I'll read him after The Physick Book.

Cheers,

Amanda

Re: When did you get your book?

That's good to know!  I received my confirmation on 3/16 and I'm still waiting but I live in California. Hope it comes soon so I can get the first few chapters before the discussion starts.

Re: When did you get your book?

I got my confirmation on 3/16 also and I still did not receive my book either. I am in Fl. I remember Sag Harbor came later also. Hopefully it will arrive soon. Usually the book discussion is divided into sections so we should have time to read it even if it doesn't come for a few days.

I have not read this one, but have just added it to my wishlist. The witch trials are an interesting subject, in my opinion.

Re: When did you get your book?

I received my confirmation on the 16th and just received my book today via UPS.  The return address indicated it shipped from NJ and I'm in MA.  I had just about given up hope!  I'm so excited to dive right in!  I love the cover art and got goosebumps reading Matthew Pearl's tribute on the back cover.

Re: When did you get your book?

I am happy to say that my book arrived today! (confirmation on the 16th, I live in MA)  It is beautiful. Thanks, B&N! I am already caught up in the story and can't wait for the discussion to begin. It was worth the wait.
