Maxcat, glad to hear your kitty is fine, I lost mine a few years ago and still can't find it in my heart to replace her.

maxcat wrote:Yes, Paul and Charlie, it has been a pleasure reading Paul's book and hope it does well. I'll take a Mimosa too, please. My cat had an ultrasound yesterday on his kidneys. Needless to say, I am wiped out! He's fine but aging and very skinny.
I am glad your cat is okay. We all age but unfortunately, not all of us are skinny! all kidding aside, I know how you felt. Years ago, people thought I was foolish because I put my dog on life support. I would do it again if I thought he would recover. Unfortunately, it was a bad batch of parvo vaccine that did him in...the vaccine that was supposed to protect him.

Hi CAG,
I'm reading "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" for one of my book clubs and find it very difficult to get into. Did it take you a while or were you taken in immediately? I know that sometimes you have to give a book a good 50-60 pages or so and then you can't put it down. I've read about 40 pages and just keep pushing. Would appreciate hearing from you.

It took me awhile to get into and then I couldn't put it down...I think somewhere between 80 and 100 it grabbed me. Try to keep reading.

Thanks, I will keep keep reading. Right now the book is overdue and I can't renew it because there are too many holds. I will have to restrain myself from TPS for a day or two and get into it.thewanderingjew wrote:It took me awhile to get into and then I couldn't put it down...I think somewhere between 80 and 100 it grabbed me. Thanks,Debbie, my cat is old and I realize he is at the point where I need to care for him. He helped me so much when I was having attacks similiar to heart attacks and the last one had me sitting up all night. He is the main reason that I went to te doctor the next day and was diagnosed with acid reflux. He knew something was wrong and would lay on my chest. So, he's a special cat to me, my buddy. I love him dearly and will be in tears when he goes.

Thanks, twj, I understand completely. We had to put down our Lab 2 months ago. He was 12 years old. He was diagnosed with lymphoma last May and we didn't want to use chemotherapy but our vet insisted that we talk to an oncologist and we finally went 2 weeks later. She could do chemo on him but he would only live 6-8 months. We thought that at least he would get to see his birthday and Christmas. What do you buy for someone that you know is not going to be here for his next Christmas? He started failing right before Christmas and the oncolgist offered more chemo for 4 months. We denied that and went with prednisone as it helped with the pain. I think I cried more at the announcement that Mocha had cancer than at the end. I guess we were prepared for it. But it was my husband's dog and he cried which made me cry. We still take walks at night when we used to walk the dog but we're more comfortable with each other as it was a great stress for the both of us.

If I were Paul H, after the week he must have had, I think I'd be looking for something stronger than a mimosa -- or a tech leader/organization deserving of a case of champagne.
It is nice to "be back", but gonna say, it aint'a clear but what it's goina to be time to say sad farewells if these snafus keep periodically reappearing. I obviously like what is offered here and enjoy the posts and interactions with so many wonderful people. Yet....

Well, everyone, I met our wonderful moderator, Rachel k. today at the library where she works. She is a wonderful person and we talked a lot about The Poachers son. She had some thoughts on it but knew that Jack was the killer just by clues found in the book. She is a very intelligent woman and enjoyed meeting her. You always think about the person who makes a comment on these threads and I must admit I did have a picture of her in mind before we met. That sort of went out the window as she was better than I expected. Very nice meeting you, Rachel and hope to meet again.

Maxcat, I'm jealous that you got to meet Rachel.
And I'm so glad that you'll not be loosing any libraries.

Unfortunately, this is only a temporary fix, sort of a bandaid to stop the bleeding. Rachel said she has survived 5 cuts so far but she is worried about July 1st as that is when the new fiscal budget rolls out and the libraries will be cut by 17 million dollars. Maybe, the library board of trustees will do a better job at cutting libraries this time as this first round they target libraries in the southeastern part of the city. Maybe they can spread the cuts out so a few libraries from each sector of the city will be affected. I truly hope she keeps her job. She is a fascinating woman and deserves to be in the library system.

Hi Maxcat! You beat me to it!
I wanted to tell the group how great it was to meet you, and that we got to talk books and cats. I can report that Maxcat says such wonderful things about her fellow book group friends that you guys would really be touched. Isn't it funny that we can know so much about each other's thoughts, but never recognize each other on the street?
But I didn't know it was Jack--I must have given the wrong impression! I wanted it to be Truman. What I thought was so fascinating about the book was that it seems obvious it was Jack only after we know--I think it is because we want so much for Mike to be right.
Rachel
