Re: Last Thoughts

The image that will always stay with me is the last chapter I gotta say I love happy endings and when you read the last part there is such a feeling and energy of joy , peace and compassion that make you day so much happier than it already is.

"People disappoint you so often. I hardly knew how to react when they surpassed all your hopes"

I believe this quote is the essence of human nature and it talks about how people always keep on surprising us whether for good or for bad people are always changing and this quote expresses this. This quote shoes that even though you may have a concept of someone this concept may change drastically without notice by just one act or something this person says and that is indeed a part of Human Nature not being completely defined and always at the edge of changing a situation by our actions or thoughts this quote resumed the whole story and part of Mikes thoughts in an emotional and happy way.

"The questions are more essential than the answers."

Re: Last Thoughts

I think it's great to be a part of the very beginning of what I am sure will be a successful series.  I really enjoyed this book as well as the discussion with all the First Look members.  You guys help me to see things in a way I never thought of.  I am really looking forward to the next installment where I will sit down and read cover to cover without sticking to a schedule.

My last thought about this book is:  Did anyone actually see Jack's body?  Could he become another urban legend like the missing POW?

Re: Last Thoughts

Wow, I can't believe it's the last day of the month. This FL went by so fast and I can't wait until the next one so I can re-connect with all my friends here and make new ones too. It was such a pleasure meeting and talking with Paul D and his editor Charlie.

The end of another FL is somewhat sad. Don't you think?

I agree with you.  I feel like something is missing in my life and I've been cut off by my friends..  The FL was a great idea!  Thank you Barnes & Noble.

Well Bonnie & Vtcozy, I went home and reread the ending.  On page 319, top, "We watched the state police unload two body bags...", but nowhere does it say who the two bodies belonged to.  It could have been Brenda's or Truman's or Pelletier's or Jack's.

A few thoughts come to mind.  Remember when Jack was telling Mike in the beginning about the German POW Camp and the two men that escaped, pages 2-3.  One man was never found.  I made a notation in my book "Did Jack want to vanish into the woods and never return?" and this was before I really got into the book.  On page 7, top, where Mike is talking with Mr. Thompson and says "...and there's nothing more dangerous than a wounded animal.  Except a drunk with a gun, said a voice in my head."  On page 68, middle, "But if anyone could vanish into these North Woods, it my was dad.  I wonder if the searchers knew what they were chasing."  Then bottom of page 296,  Mike to Jack "I remembered something you told me when I was a kid.  You said the secret to trapping is covering your own tracks."

Maybe Bonnie hit on something here.  Is Jack really dead?

[ Edited ]

This whole train of thought intrigues me.

It is like a hidden mystery in the book.

I think you're right, Jack could be alive. What a twist!

Re: Last Thoughts

To Pen 21, VTcozy and Bonnie C,
I just realized I never signed my name to my posting last night that Bonnie C may have hit on something...that Jack is still alive.  It's the long email  addressed to Bonnie C and Vtcozy about the two body bags.

Re: Last Thoughts

I really enjoy mystery books and after reading Poachers Son I will be looking for more from Paul Doiron.

The description of Maine let me see into it's woods and the people who were described. The next time I get there I will go back into that area and see it thanks to this to Paul's description.

I guess the best scene in the book was after Mike discovered that is dad did the crime. I wasn't sure that he would get killed. Good ending and very entertaining.

Re: Last Thoughts

When I began to read this book I was a little unsettled by all of the gore stuff,  the woodsy stuff, that kind of thing.   I love mysteries but tend to read more of the "chick" mysteries and the ones with witty repartee that take place in the big city, that kind of thing....kind of the "fluff" stuff.

However Paul really drew me in with his wonderful writing skills and most of all his hero, Mike.  I found Mike to be a confused person because of his unfortunate upbringing....a mother who doesn't seem to be quite the warm and fuzzy person you might want, and a father who certainly did not match the template of a father that everyone would like to have.  Every young man wants to adore his father but unfortunately Mike is one of the ones who aren't that lucky with the gene pool.    But Mike did his very, very best to work through things and to be true to himself (ie his romantic relationship such as it is).    You can see that he wants to be a good person.   I was so happy when he was taken in, so to speak, by Charley and Ora and I expect in the future they may provide him with the comfort, when they can, that he deserves.

So even though there will probably be more of the "blood and gore" stuff I would definitely like to read about what Mike does next and how he is able to continue to develop into a fine man.

This is just different enough...how many game warden heros do we have?....and well written enough to hopefully be a best seller.

Re: Last Thoughts

I totally enjoyed the book. It kept me intrigued throughout the whole story.

I was hoping that his dad hadn't committed the murders, but it was a good ending.

Can't wait for the next novel!

Re: Last Thoughts

Oh my goodness. . . it never occurred to me that Jack might. . . just might. . . still be alive.  Now, wouldn't THAT be something.

Books are not made for furniture, but there is nothing else that so beautifully furnishes a house.
