Hi Angel, it's your neighbor from St. Charles. I know what you mean about the growing community here. How I've done it now is to just read and respond to Rachel or Paul's questions without reading any of the other responses first. Because even if someone else has the same thoughts yours and mine and everyone's are unique in some way. Then I read the others and respond to the one's that move me or make me think or rethink my position.
Your opinion matters to me.

Paul,
...totally unrelated to our book discussion but I just wanted to get your (and everyone's) thoughts regarding the new Barnes and Noble nook.
I have as yet to jump on the ebook bandwagon, but this device looks enticing. Just wondered if you have tried it yet.
Would be interested to hear members thoughts on the ebook experience as well. Wonder if we will ever be involved in a first look via electronic device?

Let me preface this by saying I'm a physical book person, but, that said, nook is quite a device. It's features and capabilities are really amazing and were I to take the leap (I'm on the fence too) into ereading, it would certainly be with nook. And I don't even get an employee discount on it!
I'm actually already thinking about an eFirst Look Group ![]()

Hi Dawn,
I am also a physical book person. I do some reviews for a romance blog and they send pdfs for me to review and since I don't have an ereader I have two choices and I always end up printing the darn thing because I don't like reading off my monitor. But I would be interested in an ereader when the price comes down a little $250. is a bit high for me.

Hi Dawn, Paul and Thayer,
I have been reading ebooks for a few years. My first ebooks were on my Palm Pilot, and now I read on my iPod Touch. I still read from books, after all, there is nothing like a good book, is there?
My experience has been positive with the ereaders I use. You can adjust the size of the print to your requirements, the background can change, when you leave the book it is always bookmarked to the last page you read, and the software is pretty intuitive. Easy to start reading immediately. I usually download books that are on sale, such as the classics, a lot of books are free, and the bestsellers are usually a little cheaper.
It is not the same as reading from a good ole book, but it makes it very easy to have a lot of books wherever you go. My iPod Touch fits nicely in my pocket. I can grab a read on short trips, or anywhere. It is very convenient. Another thing I like about it is if I cannot sleep, I can read without turning on the light and disturbing my husband.
I have no experience with the Nook or the Kindle. They are a bit larger than my iPod, but the features are pretty much the same. The Nook looks smaller then the Kindle and the Sony EReader. Size would be a personal preference. I prefer the smaller one precisely because it is small. It fits almost anywhere. I have not had any problems with either my Palm Pilot or my iPod.
I hope this helps a little. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

Cathy has already reported on most of the features of the ebook readers, but I want to add just a couple of things that came to mind while reading these posts. I've used the Kindle for a couple of years now and love it. That doesn't mean that I don't buy "real" books any more; I just buy more books. Whenever I travel I take the Kindle along; it gives me a choice of around 100 books that I've downloaded, some free, some cheap, and some brand new. The screen is very different from the screens of computer or cell phone, not backlit, and readable anywhere, even at the beach in the sun. And, as impulsive reader, I tend to download magazines and newspapers along the way. Of course, so far, this is not yet possible outside the US.
One of the drawbacks for students or for book group participants (in conventional groups) is the lack of page numbers. Since the fonts can be adjusted to various sizes there needs to be a common denominator; in the case of the Kindle it is the "location." Whatever part of a page I highlight or make notes about shows up as location, and can be retrieved as such. And my second complaint, that e-ink is not yet allowing for color photographs and graphics, seems to have been answered in the nook.
I've always been told to wait with any gadget until the second generation, but was impatient and bought the first generation Kindle and will probably get the nook too in the near future. So, Paul, I'll probably be ready for the"First Nook Look" soon.

With all due respect and the risk of sounding like an ole fuddy duddy, I just have to put in my two cents worth. Frankly, I'm a bit put off by modern technology getting shoved down my throat at every opportunity. ie. digital tv, electronic books. It continues to be stuffed in until one finally caves. I certainly do not need to carry a library of 10,000 books around with me so that I have a selection of reads while waiting at the dentists office and I would not participate in any First Look Nook Book Clubs. Ahhhh, that feels better

Correction to my earlier post about nook. I stated that nook seemed to have the capacity for color. After reading Barnes & Noble blog about nook I realized that this is not true. The color screen one sees at the bottom of nook is an LCD screen which shows the book covers in color but the content on the upper screen is still only available in gray scale.

Hi marciliogq,
I'm sorry about your father's illness and hope he is doing better. I missed your input this time around, but understand how life takes precedent over book club discussions. I am regularly taking turns with other family members to care for my 97-year old mother-in-law in another town, and my life seems to be divided into two separate worlds right now; one of them being totally dominated by her well-being and the difficulties she faces, and upon my return home the effort to continue my own life and whatever comes with it.
Best wishes to you and your family from California

Just a head's up that we'll be announcing a new program next week called Sneak Peek!
Essentially, it's an early read program like First Look but on the lighter side. You'll receive an ARC and be enrolled in a two week discussion -- the author will participate for one of those weeks!
Our first selection is a ROMANCE title and the discussion will take place in our Romantic Reads Board beginning December 7th and running through December 18th.
Take note: the ARCs for this program are extremely limited, so if you're a die hard Romance fan, make sure you check out the Romantics Reads boards on Monday, November 2nd at 12:00 P.M. EST.

Sounds interesting! I am not a die hard Romance fan, but I do enjoy a "light read" every now and then. I will be on the look out on Monday!

Do give it a try, I think you will find it fun. I use eReader and Stanza (the software is free). There are a lot of others out there. An interesting one is Audiovox. It is a spoken book, the readers are all volunteers. Most of the books are classics and are free. Have fun and please let me know what you think.
