Re: Dear Readers

Sarah, the ARC of "The Postmistress" is a thing of beauty... the high-quality paper with the rippled edging, the intriguing cover photo... You must be very proud of your creation.

I read the first chapter, and you have a wonderful gift. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Re: Dear Readers

Beautiful book and the beginning grabbed my attention right away.  I have already read the 1st chapter but will try to stay with the group.  I have read a lot of books about this era but this is the first one that made me feel I was there.  I won't say more but I want to.  "The Postmistress"  is one that I will recommend to my book club as soon as it is available to the public.

Re: Dear Readers

Sarah, I cannot wait to start this book (tonight I hope!).

I mentioned in another post that I have a fascination with World War II -- not so much the military battles (though those are interesting too) but the war's effects on civilians caught in the crossfire and those on the home front.

I've been listening to the 40s music station on XM radio this week to get myself into the mood!

If the book is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside, you've got a winner.  I haven't started reading yet, but I can't wait.  Welcome!

Re: Dear Readers

Dear Sarah,

Thank you for sharing the pre-history of The Postmistress.  I sat this morning with my cup of tea to read for a few minutes before work.  I ended up 20 minutes late as I had difficulty stopping myself from reading "one more paragraph".

I am looking forward to brewing a cup of tea this evening and going to my chair by the fireplace to continue the journey.

Thank you for sharing the book with us.

Re: Dear Readers

Sarah-Thank you for this lovely offering to read this advanced copy of a book you seem to hold very dear to your heart.  Books are treasures and I am looking forward to unwrapping the hidden treasures that wait for us inside.  Historical novels are certainly a way for all of us to relive the moments of our ancestors and as you stated to view parallels to our own lives now.  Respectfully- Sue

It's a deep satisfaction to address you-to know that you are out there reading! I am thrilled (and a bit terrified) to think of you bent over my book in the next few weeks, your eyes on these pages, considering. But then I look forward tremendously to the conversation that follows once you have finished. What a privilege, and what a pleasure, for me to have been asked to join the First Look Book Club.

The book you hold in your hands has taken a long while to come through the many thickets of false starts, dead ends, and sudden flashes of insight that demand yet another draft. I have been living with my characters-Iris and Frankie and Emma-for as long as my second child has been alive; in the past eight years I have moved from one state to another, then out of the country and back again, always carrying these women, the London Blitz, the refugees of Europe, in my head. And the crystal summer of 1941, before this country went to war, hovered there at the back of my mind while the present days saw the US invasion of Iraq, the 2006 bombing of Lebanon, and then the election of Barack Obama, a wartime leader whose eloquence seems to reach the old-fashioned, stately heights of Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill.

So it has been with a curious kind of double vision that I have experienced the events of these last several years. And it occurred to me, as I wrote and watched, that though we may be told we are in "historic times," it is nearly impossible to know what that means. What that means on a personal, immediate level, that is. THE POSTMISTRESS, by dint of its long gestation, evolved from a single question-what would happen if a postmistress didn't deliver the mail?-to my fascination with characters caught off guard by war. Caught, that is, in the web of history.

Thank you for being this story's first readers. I so look forward to hearing how it catches you.

Re: Dear Readers

Dear Ms Blake-

What a joy it is to participate in this book group.  I have to confess that I have already read the first section and it is tremendous!  I will do my best to hold off on the rest.

I have just finished reading Grange House and I assume that is one of your works too.  So totally different and very interesting.

Thanks so much for giving us the opportunity to share your book in pre-publication.

Re: Dear Readers

Sarah,

It is so nice to hear from the author ahead of schedule!  Any insight that you offer us about your book is greatly appreciated!  Conversing with the author is one of the most rewarding experiences of the First Look Club.  There is no better way to discuss the work than with those that created it.  This group has always been a very insightful, enthusiastic crew.  I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I have in the past!

Re: Dear Readers

Sarah,

Thank you in advance for allowing us all to read this advance copy.  I just finished it the other night and I loved it! I have many of my friends around the world waiting for its arrival in February.  I am in a group on Goodreads, so many people saw my review and have already emailed me asking when it is out.  Way to go!  I loved how you intertwined all these lives together.  I can't wait to go back and read Grange house soon!

Thanks for such a wonderful book,

Sara

Re: Dear Readers

Sarah, Thank you so much for this opportunity.  I have always loved to read but have found myself not indulging as much lately due to the craziness of having children.  I am extremely excited to read and discuss what is sure to be a wonderful and insightful book.  I must admit I have cracked the book open and I am delighted already.  My curiosity is starting to take over but I am holding back and reading slowly - taking my time to enjoy every word.

Thank you and I look forward to further discussions.

Re: Dear Readers

Hi Sarah,

I want to thank you not only for allowing us First Lookers to be some of the first to experience your book but also for opening up a dialog between generations regarding subjects that we may have never touched upon regarding the WWII era.

Looking forward to our discussion...............Lynda

Re: Dear Readers

Sarah,

Thank you for your insight about the writing of this novel.   I am looking forward to hearing more about how these characters came to be and your process of writing the novel.  I have just started reading and am fascinated so far.  Looking forward to discussions next week.

Re: Dear Readers

I decided tl let myself start reading today, last time I read the book too fast and too far ahead of schedule so this time I decided to wait.  Fingers crossed I will stay on the schedule this time instead of racing ahead!

Re: Dear Readers

  Sarah,

First of all let me thank you for allowing us to read your novel before its' publication.  As a member of the B&N First Look Club, I have enjoyed many stories from first time authors.  I have not been disappointed and  I don't believe that you or your writing style will disappoint me this time.

I'm sure that you have had some inner discussions with yourself as to whether you really wanted others to read and critique your book before publication, bust rest assured, we are a friendly group and we all love to read.  Your book has me extremely interested as I enjoy historical fiction as well as non-fiction alike.  You have woven a very thought provoking story, and I can't wait to get into the book.

Good luck to you in your writing.  Something tells me that you are going to go far.
