Re: Community Room

I just finished "The Strain" by Chuck Hogan & Guillermo del Toro. Right now I am reading "The Devil's Queen" by Jeanne Kalogridis.

I participated in the FL selection "Of Bees and Mist" by Erick Setiawan and I just have to say what a great person he is! I joined his Facebook page & I think he responds to just about every person that posts something to him. In honor of the release of the book into paperback, he held a giveaway for autographed copies. I was so excited to win one and he remembered me from the First Look club. It's these kinds of moments that make what B&N does so special here. Not only do we get to read & discuss novels from authors just beginning their careers but there's a special relationship that develops in the memories created during those few short weeks. Can't wait to start this one!!

I remember the paper ones with the metal strips, and the stamps on the back of books. Now I have mine attached to my keyring. I love that because I always have it with me, even when i go to the gym. Who knows maybe working out will send me to the library next for a new read!

I remember the first book I checked out from the library was Where the Wild Things Are. I read The Bobsey Twins, Trixie Belden, Nancy Drew, and the Hardy Boys. After that I moved to Black Beauty followed by all of the Agatha Christie mysteries, Ellery Queen, and the Hobbit series. What fun!

I can't remember the first book- but also read Bobbsey twins, Trixie Belden, nancy drew, hardy boys, Black Beauty, The Black Stallion series.  Yes, lots of fun!!

Hi socalreader,

I really like LIsa See's books. She also wrote 3 mystery books that give you an insight into China. Be sure to read Shanghai Girls. It is hard for me to choose a favorite book, I have liked every book I have read of hers.

Hi Stephanie,

Are you a true "Jersey" angel?  I live in central NJ and always wanted to meet someone from the B&N club.

I did the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society with Annie Barrows on B&N about a year or so ago.  Annie Barrows writes children books and I had emailed her about her children's books, prefacing the B&N club, and she, too, remembered me.  There is definitely a special relationship that forms not only with the author, but also with the participants as well as the B&N staff.  I hope B&N never stops these book clubs.

Re: Community Room

I just finished The Scent of Rain and Lightning last week.  I am in progress on Antiphon in the sneak peak for sci-fi.  Getting ready to pick it up again to read the second section.

Looking forward to reading Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett soon.

Re: Community Room

I just bought The Scent of Lightning and Rain yesterday. I had heard so much about this book and it sounds so interesting that I just had to have it. Did you like it? I also have Pillars of the Earth but haven't read it yet.

Deb,

I liked it.  It had some interesting twists and was a good mystery.  I really felt like it makes you think about the assumptions you make in life and how they can affect others and the future.

Re: Community Room

Hi debbaker, "The Scent of Rain and Lightning" is very good. I read "Pillars" and found it hard to get into, but ultimately gave it 4 out of 5 stars. =)

Re: Community Room

Hi DSaff, I was thinking that I would read it in between my other reads. They have made it into a series on Starz I believe, but I have not watched the series. I want to read the book. I have heard others say that they had a hard time getting into it. Maybe that is why I haven't read more than a couple of paragraphs in the entire time that I have owned it. I am looking forward to The Scent of Lightening and Rain though. I may read it this weekend. I heard so many good things about this book. I am very excited. Good to know that you liked it. You are a tremendous reader from what I have seen on the boards. We will have to chat about it sometime.  :smileyhappy:

Re: Community Room

I'm nearing the end of "The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet" - just out, that I was lucky enough to score from my library.  Historical novel, takes place in a port city of Japan in 1799 and shortly thereafter.  Many, many characters.  I heard an interview with the author, David Mitchell, on NPR;  he said someone counted about 100 'speaking parts' in the novel.  Terrific story, with the warring Dutch and English both interacting with the very closed-off Japanese society of the time.

On my nook in the last few weeks, I've read "Rock Paper Tiger", "Memory Wall", and "The Cookbook Collection."   I've been traveling and it's sooo nice to have the nook in my carryon and not worry about weighing down my luggage with the three or four books I always need to survive a trip.

Fingers are still crossed for that confirmation notice!  That trailer Paul posted was chilling... Makes me even greedier for the book.

Re: BookMarks-Library Card

I remember getting my book written in then came the stamp.  Then the paper card, then the plastic and now I carry the little tag on my key chain.  I didn't use it much though because I come from a family of readers and books were traded back and forth and there was always plenty in the house.  My problem came when a book was really good, I wanted to own it.  Guess that's why I have so many now.  I still have those from then and keep adding to it.

For a while, my best friend in grade school, who also loved to read and own books ran a neighborhood library for the kids in our neighborhood.  We used paper cards and everything, also a card catalog.  We used our own books and our parents books too, lol.  Any book we could get our hands on.  I wanted to be a librarian and/or writer when I grew up.  Alas, I found out I had to have a degree to be one, which I didn't understand (since I thought I knew about it already, lol), and writing sorta got lost when everyday life took over.

Re: Community Room

I would love to chat about the books, Deb. I am watching the "Pillars" series and while it is good, it is somewhat different from the book. Happy reading.  :smileyhappy:

Hi Stephanie

Of Bees and Mist was one of the best books I've read in a long time. And I read it here at FL.

Thank you for sharing, and I couldn't be more excited for you. I love, and I mean love, to get signed copies.
