I have appreciated the opportunity to read a book by an author that is new to me. I was pulled into this book immediately. I felt this was a very well written book. I don't normally like the switch in time mode of storytelling but I thought it worked with this story. I thought that it held the suspense for a longer period of time. The characters were well developed. Mr. Machart wrote in such a way that I cared about them and what would happen to them. His writing is so very descriptive that I felt I was there in the story watching the sunsets, watching the horse races. The story came alive and leapt from the pages. I must agree with what a few others have said about some of the content being somewhat more graphic than I would have chosen to read but I felt it was just a part of the descriptive writing involved in the telling of this family's story. I couldn't stop reading this book as soon as I started it. I was so impressed by this writers storytelling. He has a way with words. I was pleased with how the story ended as well.
Again, thanks for this opportunity Barnes and Noble, First Look and most of all Mr. Machart for sharing his story with us.
