Re: Nook Tips at B&N stores

Congratulations, Thayer!!  I love using my own pictures as wallpaper. There are lots of tips and tricks (including how to add pictures to wallpaper and screensavers) on the Nook boards here. If your B&N has a "Nook at Night," or something like that, it is helpful too. We loved the group we were with tonight - lots of help both from the facilitator and from each other.  :smileyhappy:

Now I just want to try to get some pics for wallpaper-not sure how that process works. Haven't gotten a cover yet. Anyone have any advice?  And I love that B & N offers coupons while in store. Haven't taken mine yet-our nearest B & N is like 40 minutes away. I actually bought my Nook at BestBuy.

Can't wait for our ebooks to appear in our lockers!

Re: Nook Tips at B&N stores

Congratulations Thayer. Isn't it fun to play with.

I have been so busy reading that I haven't tried a lot of things. Last night at B&N I couldn't get the free 7 layer bar coupon to come up. I was there again tonight and I had to turn it off, then on and the coupon was there. Not sure why, but persistence paid off. Off course I got a free bar, but I needed to buy a drink to go with the bar.

I also read 50 more pages in the book I started last night. I might get the whole book read at this rate.

Donna, keep us up to date with any good tips you heard from your "Nook at Night" session. I didn't see one at my store. I was going to ask. But there were so many people asking questions that were thinking of buying nooks, I decided to ask when it isn't so busy. It is nice that they have so many covers now. I bought a cover, I put the link to it below. I like that the cover folds to the back while I read, making it very comfortable to read. I also like that there is pockets for my notecards and such. There are a lot of covers to choose from.

Re: Nook Tips at B&N stores

Nice cover, Pen! Our B&N hasn't received any covers and probably won't until June. They were also pretty much sold out of everything but the book lights. I am thinking of making a cover for now to keep it protected, which will give us time to decide which cover we want and order it online.

BTW, If you can't get to someone at the store, call and ask about the Nook informational sessions. If they don't have one, ask that they start one. Not only did we learn how to take off the back cover properly, but also how to change the battery, do a hard reboot, add more memory, use the highlighting feature, add books, get to the coupons, etc. There was a lot of information, some of which we shared with each other. We also had at least one person trying to decide whether or not to buy the Nook, so it is in the store's best interest to offer the sessions.  :smileyhappy: We also all got our 7-layer bars. LOL

Donna,

Sounds liked you learned a lot of good things.

Describe the highlight if you can, I have not tried that. pen21

Also i heard the link to my nook cover wasn't always working. So here it is again.

Highlighting text

Here is what I learned about highlighting text.  :smileyhappy:

Open what you are reading to the place you want to highlight.

Scroll "up" from the "Find" area to find "Highlights and notes."

Touch "Add highlight or note."

Use the arrows on the next screen to locate the beginning of your selection, then "Start selection."

Use the arrows to Move to the end of your selection, then touch "End selection."

Name your highlight or note, then touch "Submit."

You will see the highlight or note after that.

Scrolling up was the opposite of what I was thinking and the reason I couldn't find the pictures I added for wallpaper at first. Once you figure out the up and down of scrolling, you will find lots of things! <grin>

Re: Highlighting text

Thank you Donna. I will give it a try.

I agree on the scroll up and down. It is the opposite of what I thought.

I got a new cell phone and it scrolls up and down like the nook.

So I guess the cell phone and nook are right, and I have it all backwards.

I am getting more accustomed to the touch of the screen, like for turning pages and navigating. That took me a bit to master. I like that we also have the buttons for paging.

Rooms

I LOVE my Nook and the renewed joy in reading it has brought me!  My daughter teases that my Nook is permanently attatched to my hands!

Right now I am reading Rooms.  If you liked The Shack you may want to give

Rooms a try.  Best of all it is available to download free at B&N!

I figured out the highlighting and notes but did they tell you how to get back to them once you have highlighted them?

Re: Highlighting text

No, they didn't tell us that, and I didn't think to ask. As I was just looking, I found a "view notes for this page" but nothing about highlights. My work around for now would be to bookmark the pages and then use that to get back to them. Hopefully this feature will be improved in the next upgrade. :smileyhappy:

Think of it this way: when you scroll on your computer, the actual screen moves UP to get to the BOTTOM and moves DOWN to get to the TOP.  You may move a scroll bar up or down, but the screen moves in the oppostie direction.  It's the same with scrolling on a touch screen, except that you're moving the actual screen with your finger instead of a scroll bar, so have to move in the actual direction of the screen.  :smileyhappy:

For those who asked, as of right now, you can only get to your highlights and notes by going to the pages in the book where you put them.  Being able to access a separate list of them is one of the most requested features.

You should all spend some time on the NOOK boards.  Everyone there is really helpful and they often know more than the people who work in the stores.  :smileyhappy:

I am so excited that you got a Nook.  I absolutely love mine.  I looked at all the covers and finally found one I really wanted.  It cost a little more, but I love the quality.  (trying to post the link to it) http://www.oberondesign.com/shop/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=1149

Not sure if it will work, but it's a company called Oberon Design out of California.  Service was fantastic, and the cover worth every penny!

I have to figure out the lend me feature.  I have at least one book that a few people would love.... but if I actually stopped reading books (and playing) and actually read the guide, I would be all set!:smileyhappy:

One of the first things I did was to put some of my own pictures on my Nook. The first being a shot of Jackson Square from St Louis Cathedral.  It looks great!!

Keep me posted on your new love!!!

Re: I have one too!

Actually, I bought a nook for my mother-in-law, but had it sent to me so I could set it up for her (and so I can do the FL).  Since my MIL is low tech (or should I say no tech), I think she will be pleased with this e-reader.  I am more of an i-person and catch myself trying to do something by touching the top screen.

I considered the daVinci cover, but got Bold Celtic in black:

I had a great experience with Oberon, too. I love this cover and I agree, it is worth it. My mother looked at me like I was nuts when she found out what I paid, but I spent more on the Nook. Since I spent that much on the Nook, I'm going to spend money to protect it and get something I want to look at and to hold.

Re: Nook Tips at B&N stores

Glad you got the NOOK it is an awesome thing to have.   Someone recommend the site  http://www.nook-look.com/  for screen savers and wallpaper, it's  great site I've already down loaded wallpapers.   I also bought the Jonathan Adler Punctuation cover http://gifts.barnesandnoble.com/Jonathan-Adler-Punctuation-Cover/e/9781615600625/?bnit=H&cds2Pid=303... and love it.  But I am looking at a 2nd cover and really like http://www.oberondesign.com/shop/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=1149  that someone posted earlier.
