Re: Community Room

jenn0108,

I love Lisa See's writing. I have read most of her books.

I am working my way through her mysteries now.

There was an entire board for the discussion of Peony in Love with Lisa See partcipating.

Take a look and see what the author said about the books and she answered questions.

The discussion is broken down by parts of the book and discussion topics.

Hi Barb, I'm Cathy from southern Massachusetts. How do you like Matterhorn? I have it, but have not read it yet. It's next on my tbr list.

I have always been interested in the Vietnam War so am liking Matterhorn - so sad what our soldiers went through.  The conditions they were forced to endure are just astounding.  I don't think anyone can ever really understand unless they experienced it first hand.  I have a lot of respect for our veterans.  It's a big book (which I like) but an easy read because of the content.  Would be a great book club pick.

Re: Community Room

Hello, I am Chrys in Houston.  I signed up for this FL yesterday but have not received my confirmation.  I have been waiting for a E-Book FL, so glad to see it.  I am looking forward to my first FL and B&N's first E-FL.

I am currently reading the Percy Jackson series along with my two 11 yr. olds.  I just finished book three, The Titans Curse.  I am reading Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and Ella Minow Pea by Mark Dunn.

Re: Community Room

Now you're really tempting me.  Sudoku on the Nook.  What about jigsaw puzzles?  I do a jigsaw every single day on line and especially enjoy the circular puzzles with diagonal pieces.  I have to see how reading from my computer (not a laptop) is.  If the FL keeps digital I will just have to give in as I won't give up the FL.  I wish we could start reading The Writing Circle already.

I have read The Help, and yes, it was fantastic.  Another one I have downloaded a sample of is The Known World. I seem to have a theme going.  :smileywink: (that was one in Oprah's magazine)

I'm enjoying the third in the Bride Quartet,  I also really enjoyed Every Last One,by Anna Quindlan.  I hadn't read anything by her since Black & Blue.(which was also very enjoyable.)

(oh and the other thing with the Nook, it now has Sudoku, which I love! and chess, on it!!)

Nancy,

It seems we have more than just our love for NOLA in common...I too read and enjoyed Wench, as well as the Nora Roberts "bride quartet" series (plan to download the latest onto my laptop).

Have you read The Help? I am reading it now and it is really good. I think you might enjoy it as well.

Glad you are joining this First Look as well.

Re: Community Room

I just finished reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and loved it.  I had problems with the first 60 or so pages and someone in The Poacher's Son" Community Room told me to keep reading and it would pick up.  I'm trying to figure out how to start the next book, The Girl Who Played With Fire"...maybe I'll do the audio.  I saw The Dragon Tattoo movie and it was unbelievable.

I'm very disappointed that this is an e-book only. After so many great ARC selections I had hoped that Barnes and Noble would continue, but it looks like they might be moving in a new direction. It's a shame. I can't get in to reading books on my computer nor do I have any interest in an electronic reader. I like my books the way they've been produced for centuries. Guess this will give me an opportunity to not get distracted from my growing TBR list.

I just can't help but feel that it is unfair to those of us who have been faithful participants of the FL process for years. But maybe that's just me, it seems everyone else is excited.

Nobody said that this was the end of the physical First Look Book Club.

THANK YOU, PAUL!

Hi Jillian,

I loved Eat, Pray, Love and am anxiously waiting for the movie to come out in August.  I was disappointed, though, with Committed.  I felt like she was writing a thesis and stopped reading it about 20 pages from the   end.  I recently attended a women's series where Elizabeth Gilbert was the guest speaker.   She's a great speaker, from the heart just as she wrote in EPL.

Re: Community Room

After buying a case, a reading light and designing a custom gelaskin, I decided to get cracking buying books!

I have finished Shutter Island, 2 Jesse Stone books by the late Robert Parker and 2 in the #1 Ladies Detective Agency (including the new one) plus a couple free books. I love the freebie on Friday.

As I am a professional genealogist, I am reading the companion book to the TV series, "Who Do You Think You Are?" I recommend this for anyone who wants to get involved in researching their family history.

Re: Community Room

I love my Nook.  It is super easy to use, although you will need a light if you like to read before bed.  It isn't backlit, so if you don't have light, you don't see.  (I did, however, find a fantastic LED light that uses 3 AAA batteries - so I can use rechargeable ones - much more eco-friendly).  In addition to the other poster who liked the ability to carry around many books without the added weight, it is also a plus that I feel better about the eco-friendly benefits of my Nook.  I'm not a totally green person, mind you, but my husband works for a large disposal company and I hear, regularly, about the landfill situation!  It is something I think about without even being conscious of thinking it anymore.

Hey everyone,

I am Dawn from Tennessee. I am excited about this First Look since it is the inaugural digital version.  I am still contemplating a Nook purchase and a couple of weeks ago I downloaded the free e-reader from B & N.

I must confess I am enjoying the convenience of downloading the books and having so many choices available on my laptop at all times. It truly is great when travelling. I think I definitely see a Nook purchase in my near future.   :smileyvery-happy:    I just wonder if the Nook is easy to navigate. Any of you who have one please give your feedback.

This story looks as if it will be a fun one to get into.  Oh and yes, it will be great not to have the anxiety of watching for the UPS driver.   Can't wait to begin!

Oh yeah, I just finished reading "Twenties Girl" from Sophie Kinsella.  I just love her style!  I think I'll select something light and fairly short next, so I'll have it done when our new FL Book hits my digital shelf.

Re: Community Room

Donna,

If you liked SAA's other two titles, you'll no doubt enjoy this one also.  I finished listening to it last week and it was quite enjoyable.  It was as different and as similar as Garden Spells and The Sugar Queen were to each other.  Did that even make sense?  What I am trying to say is that SAA's distinct "voice" is here, along with her mystical, magical style.

Re: Community Room

Yep, you can side load your own pictures on your Nook.  I have my favorite pictures of my cats, my niece and a wallpaper picture from the newest release of my All-Time Fav Author!  It tickles me each time I turn off my Nook to see which of my favorite things will show up on the screen.  Its like the Alice-in-Wonderland downloads, but sooo much better, because they're mine.  However, I do want the pretty little flower picture currently seen on the Nook page.  I wonder if B&N will ever add more pictures for downloading to our Nooks?

Hey, pen, you have an option of 3 wallpapers on the nook and a few screensavers. But the one I have is the Alice in Wonderland screensaver. I think you can download pictures on the nook but I'm not sure.

As I have mentioned elsewhere, I love my [redacted name of an e-book reader]. I'm certainly not throwing out the copies of books that I buy (I can't even stand to part with books I don't like, or with multiple editions of the same book), the waste that I'm saving is actually books/.pdfs (I do a lot of reading for school in the form of .pdf articles, chapters, and essays)/writing that I would print in hard copy and then never know what to do with. Now I keep a copy on my desktop computer, and do my reading on my [e-reader]. I also love the instant gratification aspect--I can get my books at any time of the day or night, and without waiting for shipping. It's great for travel (except the beach, of course).

On an unrelated note, I just finished

Beatrice and Virgil. I liked this one so much better than The Life of Pi, though at times it felt a little self-indulgent (in a sort of smarmy, auto-biographical way) and at times it was disturbingly violent. Has anyone else here read this one? If so, what did you think?

Good morning, Paul!

I am currently reading The Heights by Peter Hedges after recently meeting him at a Book & Author event in Indianapolis. Elizabeth Berg was also one of the authors at the event and I just finished her latest book The Last Time I Saw You.

What are you currently reading, Paul?

Re: Community Room

Hi everybody!

Super excited to be doing this First Look selection on the Nook. I just got mine a month ago and I am still getting used to the idea of reading books in this format. I am a staunch - I want to feel the book in my hand and be able to smell the pages, etc - bookworm and bibliophile.I doubt I will be a complete ebook convert, but I definitely see the benefit of something like this and I am also really excited to see how the Nook faires on a vacation coming up this month!

I just finished Little Bee by Chris Cleave last night and I am moving on to The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters now.

I have recently read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society, Sarah's Key, The Girl She Used to Be, and  The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Out of those, I think "Guernsey" has been my favorite lately :smileyhappy:

Re: Community Room

Yay, I just got the message that I'm confirmed :smileyhappy:  And I finally figured out how to get ebooks from the library onto my nook, so it's a good reading day!  Thanks for the tip on the Dragon Keeper download.  I just went and got that one too.  I'm building up quite a backlog of books to read.

Speaking of wallpapers and screen savers, have any of you guys tried nook-look.com?  I just went on yesterday and downloaded a wallpaper from one of my favorite tv shows.  There's some pretty stuff there.

As for this e-book, is there anything special we need to do to obtain it or should it just show up on our nook once we're confirmed?

I loved both Guernsey and Sarah's Key! I'm a sucker for WWII era fiction, though. Did you read The Postmistress by Sarah Black with First Look?
