I’m thrilled and honored that my novel The Writing Circle has been selected to be part of the Barnes and Noble First Look Book Club, and I’m excited about the literary adventure we’re about to embark upon together. You’re my first readers, and so quite important to me. You can imagine how eagerly I await hearing your thoughts about my book.
I’ve always been intrigued by the unexpected connections I discover between different people I know, and the way the things we do and say reverberate through the many threads that link us. In The Writing Circle I wanted to consider a group of people who are connected in more complex ways than they realize, and the unintended consequences that the actions of one person can have on someone else whom they may not even know.
I chose to center my story on a group of writers because they’re the people I understand best. I’ve been in several different writing groups in the past, and am currently a member of two. One is an informal gathering of writers that meets in a local café on Friday afternoons. The other is a critique group where we read aloud from our current manuscripts, and where I read my first draft of The Writing Circle. (No, none of them are models for characters in my book.)
The Writing Circle is about six writers—three men and three women—who call themselves The Leopardi Circle, and gather regularly to share their work-in-progress. There are two novelists (one unpublished), a well-known poet, a biographer, a historian (who was once married to the biographer), and a successful writer of thrillers—all of them feeling somewhat competitive as well as vulnerable (and yes, writers do feel vulnerable about their work!) In their group, as is often the case, there are unwritten rules, and I was interested in what happens when one member of the group does something that other members group see as a betrayal. I wanted to explore the moral struggle within the characters, as well as the struggles between them.
Although some of the characters in The writing Circle are more endearing than others, I came to have affection for all of them (even one whom I would definitely not be friends with if my story were real life.) When I finished the novel and turned it over to my editor I felt bereft, as if I had parted with close members of my family. It will be fun to talk about these characters with you, and to see whom you empathize with.
Thank you for being of our select circle. I can’t wait to hear from you!
Warm wishes,
Corinne

Corinne,
Thank you so much for joining us. I will be starting to read the first section of your book in a few days. I like it fresh in mind for the discussion next week. It is also exciting that this is a digital read. I will be reading on the nook. Do you have a digital device to read on? It will be a new experience for all of us, as this is the first First Look to be digital.
Looking forward to your comments on all our postings as we read your book.

This is the first time I'll be able to interact with an author as I read their novel.
I am looking forward to the experience, especially since I've had to tear myself away from "The Writing Circle" after finishing the first reading assignment.
I definitely did NOT want to stop.

While you may have felt you were parting with members of your family...I think your family is actually about to grow much larger;-)
Looking forward to reading your work and the discussions to come.

Hi Corinne,
Welcome to the First Look group. Just as in your story, we are an informal group of readers that meet via B&N and just love to discuss novels. The characters will be discussed in every which way, maybe we'll even (temporarily) change them a bit or even change the plot. But, not to worry, we always finish up with the novel in tact for the next readers to enjoy.
I started reading last night and this is a first for me because I've never read a book sitting at my computer before. I started my list of questions/comments and can't wait for the discussion to begin.
So, Corinne, get ready because next week we will take you on an amazing journey and you may be surprised at what you don't know about your group of writers.

Corinne,
it's us who should be thanking you, it takes a courageous author to stand by and let amateurs pick apart your work. But we're a friendly group so I promise we'll be gentle.
I am looking forward to reading the novel on schedule and chatting with my fellow first lookers and you.
Thanks again and good luck with the novel

Hello,
Welcome and thank you. This is my first B&N book club adventure and being able to write to the author of the book will make that adventure even more exciting and enjoyable.
Looking forward to getting to know you, the characters, and other members of the club better in the very near future!

Hello Corinne!
I am so excited to be part of First Look and to be reading your book. I can't wait for the discussions to begin. I am on my second time reading the first part because I am having a hard time putting it down and don't want to get ahead of the assignment.
Thank you so much for letting us be part of this exciting journey with you.

Corinne,
I got confused on our time line and have just finished the first reading section. I am enjoying your book very much already and look forward to the questions and discussion. I have been a part of several First Look selections and The Writer's Circle is a nother hit as far as I'm concerned. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to read an advance copy and have the opportunity to have you join our discussion.

Hello Corinne. Hello everyone else. It seems we are eager to plunge in. I've been in book clubs for the last 20 years or so, but never with the author taking part in the discussion. What a wonderful dimension this will add.
I am new to this group, and new to the Nook as well. May I confess that I don't love reading a book electronically? It is cumbersome to go back to pages already read to check a detail that I may have missed. Hmm....what page was that on? Here? No, here. Now where was I? I really prefer an actual book with actual pages.
I think I'll try what Jacquie is doing. I'm almost done with the first section of reading; I'll just reread it a second time to catch the missed details and keep it fresh in my mind.

Hi Corinne,
Welcome to our little corner of the world. I am looking forward to the ensuing weeks of reading your novel and discussing it with our little family of rabid readers and also with you. Thank you for allowing into your world.
We are a friendly group and enjoy reading and experiencing new authors and new novels. Somehow, I think you are going to have a hit on your hands with this story.
For now, sit back and enjoy. I know as for me, that I am going to enjoy this story.

Hello Corinne,
I have started reading The Writing Circle. At this point I am being introduced to each of the characters. After reading your thoughts behind the writing of the book, I am very much looking forward to seeing these characters interact and the story really develop.
I hope you will find your experience with the First Look Group beneficial and enjoyable.

Corinne,
Thank you for allowing us to be the first to read your work, and for your participation with our group. As you can tell if you have read the other threads, we are very eager readers (WHERE IS MY DOWNLOAD!!!) ![]()
As this is the inaugural electronic First Look, I was interested to hear your views on e-reading versus actual books. I have recently purchased a nook, and am surprised by how much I am enjoying it.
Thanks again for joining us. I look forward to the discussion.

Welcome Corinne, I am enjoying The Writing Circle so far. I find that I have to read the whole book first and then go back to the parts that we are discussing to review. I am curious as to which character you would not be friends with, I know which one I would not be but I am also curious if my opinon will change as I finish the book. Looking forward to the discussions with you and the other readers.
