I took my Mac laptop into the genius at the Apple Store. Turns out B & N ereader will only work if my laptop is 10.5 or better. Mine is 10.411. Looks like I am out of First Look for this book.

Any chance of a hard copy somewhere?

Thanks for this information; I was having the same problem. You saved me probably hours worth of work trying to do something that wouldn't work.

Have you been in touch with Paul H? If not, send him a PM and I'm pretty sure he can help you. (Sorry, I didn't have time to check through the thread to see if you did or did not communicate with Paul.)

Re: Downloading and E-Reading Issues

Sorry to say I will not be able to read this book,  Thankfully I read the  previous post about the gal who took her laptop to the Apple Store and it has to be 10.5.  I have the same problem she does --mine is 10.4.    Sorry, I have rad at least 7 First Look Books so I am disappointed, but I can't afford new computer now either  Thanks for letting me try--can you give my space to someone else?

Do you have a Blackberry or ipod touch you can download the ereader to either of those and read from them.

Re: Downloading and E-Reading Issues

I am unable to open the copy of this book on my Nook.  It opens in the PC eReader just fine.  I archived and unarchived the copy on the Nook, no luck.  I deleted the copy off the Nook (after figuring out which one of the ISBN's it was (there was no name) and redownloaded, still it won't open.

So, I sideloaded it and that one opens.  Here is the really weird part.  As I was reading, I finished a chapter, went to the next, and realized I had already read it.  So, I checked the TOC in the book and they aren't listed twice.  I checked the contents in the touchscreen under goto and here's what I see starting at Virginia's first chapter, I see Virginia, Nancy, Paul, Gillian, Adam, Nancy, Adam, Nancy, Chris ....   So the Adam and Nancy chapters are duplicated.  I checked the first and last pages of all 4 chapters and they are the same for Adam - Adam and Nancy - Nancy so I assume the entire chapter is the same.  Once I get to Chris it seems to get back to normal.

And even more strange, it is ok on the PC eReader, which is reading the same copy of the book as the Nook.

Re: Downloading and E-Reading Issues

[ Edited ]

i made notes in certain parts of the book. however, when i click on annotations...the column opens with the list of my notes but it only shows the first few words of each. i select them but i cannot open any of them fully to read what i actually wrote. does anyone know what i am doing wrong? i am reading it on a laptop.

also, the highlights are not highlighted on all my computers...do highlights have to be accessed only from the original computer used...oops, i started in florida and i am at the cape in ma, now!

also, i broke my foot so i am using whatever computer happens to be closest to me...do i need to use the same one all the time? when i tried to get to the last page read it went to the title page.

thank you all for any suggestions!

Re: Downloading and E-Reading Issues

I've never been able to synchronize my nook, my desktop, and my netbook as far as notes and highlights are concerned.

For "Reading  Now" I write down the last page read, in case I go to another computer. I think this feature will be fixed soon in a software update. At least it has been discussed a lot.

. Right-clicking on the highlighted area produces the whole note. You can then either edit it or delete it (or just read the whole note.)

Re: Downloading and E-Reading Issues

Thanks Sunlt. I am not sure why, but that did not work for me all the time. Right clicking brought up the option to edit it, but not all of the notes. i must have some notes without highlights, apparently. Something must have gone wrong with the way I did it. Now I don't know how to view those notes without accompanying highlights...This is a learning process.

I have 10.5.8 and I can't even open my book.  In addition, the reader locks up; the books don't show up in the reader either.  I manager to open some of the books in preview mode on my computer, but never in reader.  It's getting frustrating.  I've taken part in the past 7 or 8 or maybe more.  I hate to miss this one.  I'm not a fan of this e-reader so far, unfortunately.

Hi Bonnie,

To get back to the menu from the book you're currently reading there is a tab on the left-hand side of the book - if you click on it the navigation pane will pop up.  From there you can go to your B&N library.  Similarly, the "settings" portion of the navigation pane will all you to enlarge the text of your book and decrease the margins; this will help with the column problem.

Melissa,

Thank you so much for your reply!  I completely overlooked the tab on the left.  To tell you the truth, it looks almost identical to the tab for my Wacom Intuos3 Tablet and it's located in the same spot, so I just assumed it was the tab I was used to seeing.  Once I clicked it and saw all of the options, I was one happy camper.

Thanks again! <3

Re: Downloading and E-Reading Issues

I think my nook croaked last night.  It froze Sunday and I was able to thaw it several times.  Yesterday It froze again...but now I have a white screen.  When the battery or cord is plugged in it flashs white black white black white and just stays there.  I took the battery out and let the nook sit all night with no power what so ever and it did the same thing today.  BTW the nook is from the January shipment.

Suggestions will be welcome....I guess I will take it to the store tomorrow night...we live to far away to just run to the store and see if they can help me.

All that to say guess I won't be participating.  I carried the nook with me everywhere!  Sure will miss it.

Re: Downloading and E-Reading Issues

Re: Downloading and E-Reading Issues

If it loads successfully you just keep on reading. If you have more problems you might want to go to the nook help board and do a search or start reading some of their threads on sick nooks.

The nook stopped the loading process and I guess it is toast.  Well see what happens tomorrow night.

Re: Downloading and E-Reading Issues

[ Edited ]

Hi everyone,

Corinne just brought up a problem with the typeface in some of the electronic versions of the books. Please use this thread to reply with questions or comments about this.

In each of the chapters where the Leopardis have a meeting, the novel includes samples of the writing that the group members are reading for each other to critique. Those samples should be obvious by being indented and set in a smaller type. In many of the readers, this text shows up looking just like the surrounding text--not set off at all.

This would certainly be confusing, because the writing samples won't make sense if they are read as part of the narrative of this story!

I don't know how our page numbers sync up, but I'll try to post those tomorrow evening.

Formatting for Writing Circle excerpts: Pages

Hi all,

I think these are the passages which include samples of writings from each of the Leopardi's during the writing circle's meetings:

Bernard--p 33/34
Gilliam--p 35
Chris--p 99
Virginia 102/103
Chris--p135
Adam--137/140

Re: Downloading and E-Reading Issues

I had no problem with the download to my nook. I also had no problem with reading the novel on my nook. I would not want to read it on a computer screen though. The only disadvantage of the nook is that I can't read in the bathtub!
