I found The Writer's Guide to Book Editors Publishers and Literary Agents quite insightful. Make sure you get the latest edition. I've also gone extensively online looking up Literary Agents. Check out the AAR website for the reputable ones (www.aar-online.org). It's also a good idea to e-mail agents to make sure they are still in business and still located at the addresses in the listings. Most have responded back to me when I checked.
