I am thinking of a thing that is mentioned in passing in many of the books...
1. No, this thing would not fit in a shoebox
2. Does this thing does not stay in or near the same place throughout the books, but it is associated with some one/thing that moves around.
3. No, it would not be considered a piece of art (pictures, sculptures, gargoyles, wall hangings, etc.).
4. Yes, It has been found at Hogwarts.
5. Alas, there may more than one of them, but we don't know for certain. One of them would certainly be enuf in both the wizarding and the muggle worlds.
6. Alas, we don't know if it is magical or not.
7. No, it is not alive.
8. Yes, the person/thing it is associated with it is alive.
((Perhaps the associated answer wasn't as clear as it should have been, and I certainly don't want to confuse anyone (baffle, yes, but not confuse) so I wrote the reply as I expected the query would have been had it (the abswer) been worded clearly.))
9. Psychee just asked this too. Alas we don't know if it is magical or not.
10. As we don't know if it has powers of its own, I can only say that it might be up to the powers of the summoner whether it could be summoned. Once summoned, what it could do would be up to its own powers, if any, or to the powers of the summoner. Remembering, of course, that it could have the power, or have been enchanted with the power, not to be summoned in the first place. In other words, It depends..........
11. No, It is not one of the Hogwarts statues.
12. Yes, we see someone using/touching it (I know we can't "see them" in the books, but I don't know how else to ask! ((That's the p[erfect way to ask!))).
13. Yes, it is always mentioned by the same person.
As the thing I am thinking of was just "mentioned in passing", It would take a focused reread of all the likely chapters in all 7 books to say what books it is mentioned in. Sorry for not being more specific.
14 No, I do not believe it was mentioned in Book 1.
15 Yes, at least I think it was mentioned in Book 2.
16 Yes, at least I think it was mentioned in Book 3
17. No, it is not used for naughty, bad, or evil puposes.
18. No, it is not associated with Hagrid.
19. No, it is not associated with a staff member at Hogwarts.
20. No, it is not associated with a student at Hogwarts.
21. No, it is not bigger than 12 feet square.
22. Yes, the person who mentions it is female, but don't get hung up on that.
23. No, the person who mentions it is not the same person or thing that it is "associated with".
24. No, I think this thing (the one particular one mentioned) is not only found at Hogwarts. And if it was, it certainly could have been mentioned when it was somewhere else.
25. No, it is not part of the castle (stairway, tower, door, etc.).
26. No, the person who mentions it is not a student or a Hogwarts staff member.
27. Yes, the thing or person it is associated with is a person.
28. No,the thing or person it is associated with is not a creature.

Could you please clarify your answer to 24? The first sentence seems to indicate that it is found at other locations besides Hogwarts, but the second sentence seems to indicate that it has never been mentioned outside of Hogwarts. Is it or is it not seen in the books outside of Hogwarts?
29. Is this thing ever seen at all in the books?
30. Is it something that might not exist, such as some of the things the Lovegoods believe in?
31. Is it bigger than 6 foot square?
32. Does it have anything to do with ghosts?

As I recall, it was seen outside of Hogwarts. By the 2nd sentence I meant that if my recollection is in error and it hasn't been mentioned as being outside of Hogwarts, it certainly copuld have been, because it is so closely associated with a person who is definately seen outside of Hogwarts. For example, it it were Harry's wand (which it is not) if it were never mentioned when Harry was outside of Hogwarts, it certainly could have been because he (almost) always has it with him. My apologies for the confusion.

Well, I was going to wait and see if Psychee got it, since she did most of the work, but...
.
I'm thinking of a thing and it is only seen in one book, but is mentioned in more than one (I think, I'll check).

1. Is it a creature or being (or whatever JKR calls centaurs, etc)?
2. Is it alive, or was it ever alive?
3. Are there more than one of them?
4. Is it magical?
5. Would it fit in our shoebox?

3. Yes, there are more than one of them.
4. I don't know if it would be classified magical, but I would say yes.
5. No, it would not fit in our shoebox.

6 Is it a creature?
7 If so, are you thinking of a specific creature (Buckbeak) as opposed to all creatures of that kind (Hippogriffs)?
8 Is it a being?
9 If so, are you thinking of a specific being (Dobby) as opposed to all beings of that kind (House Elves)?

7. (Whoa!! Just noticed a conflicting message here. Sorry.) I am not thinking of just one of the creatures, but of a species (if you will)
8&9. No, it is not a being.
10. No, it does not have more than two legs.
11. No, it does not have more than four legs.
12. No, no one in the Trio owns it.
13. No, it does not have feathers.
14. No, it does not have fur.
15. I guess it could be larger than a pony. I think it is (would not dwell on that).
16. No, it is not introduced in Lupin's class.
17. No, it is not introduced in Hagrid's class.
18. No, it is not a basilisk.
19. If you mean like "do the creatures all have individual names", they are never mentioned if they do. We do know the name of the species.
