Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

Hi all!

I've seen people talking about this a lot, so i started a thread. What really happens during the summer vacation? Do teachers go home? Are they married? Do they have families? Share your predictions.

Re: Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

Apparently, Snape, at least, has a home away from Hogwarts.  But that may be necessary since he's leading such a double life.  In college I had a 'dorm mother' who lived at the dorm all year round....so I suppose not everyone has a second home.  It seems Professor Trelawny stayed at Hogwarts all the time - I suppose so Dumbledore could protect her from Voldemort.

I'm not sure about the others...can't wait to see other people's opinions.

Re: Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

I think that all of the teachers, except perhaps Snape,  live full time at Hogwarts.  However, I must explain this theory.  I think they would be able to use the summer to travel, experience new magical concepts, visit family, etc.  Just like in our muggle world, this would be the time for personal expansion and the teachers' opportunity to do what they want, be it travel, further education, or leisure.  I can imagine conferences with the International Teachers Association to network with teachers in other countries!

Additionally, I do not believe that any of the teachers would be married.  I just don't see how a teacher who spends 9 months at work would be able to devote enough time to a family.  I don't think it impossible, just improbable.  I think that not every person is meant to marry and have children, so with that in mind, a teacher who felt this way, would probably love working at Hogwarts.  In some way, I feel that the other Hogwarts staff and students would be their family!  However, if a teacher did have a spouse and children, I imagine their children would attend Hogwarts with discounted tuition!

Again, I want to stress that I don't believe marriage and family would be a problem from the schools' point of view, I just don't see it happening.

Re: Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

I have to take a slightly more lighthearted approach to this question.

Harry says at some point he imagines Dumbledore sitting on a beach:

-I can see Dumbledore sitting on the beach in a one-piece bathing costume, with his very long crooked nose covered in the white zinc oxide stuff we used to use  light years ago before the sun became our enemy.

-I think Hagrid takes Ballroom dancing lessons

-Flitwick goes to a gym to "bulk up"

-McGonagall goes to a wizard casino and plays the slots

-Sprout spends the summer at a spa and gets pampered

-Snape goes to a Tanning parlour, gets really brown, and then hits the clubs in disco wear

Mollywobbles,

I think I'll keep an eye out for Prof. McGonagall net time I go to Vegas.  I really like that one!

Snape in disco is something I do not think I wish to see :smileyhappy: that would leave a mental scar!  :smileyvery-happy:

I think Trelawney would spend the summer polishing glass balls and thinking of new ways to terrify the next batch of students. Or maybe she goes someplace to buy more necklaces and bigger glasses

Re: Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

Hummm...good question...one I've never actually thought of before.

I suppose that some teachers remain at Hogwarts during the summer seeing as how some are always present during the Christmas holidays.  It's probable that some live off campus seeing that Hogsmeade is near the school.  Teachers and staff could also walk off camus and apparate to their own homes.  The house heads, Dumbledore, and Flitch however do remain on campus.  The others most likely have their own lives.

It would definately be interesting to find out from J.K. herself if she ever thought about it...

Re: Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

According to the link below, teachers leave for summer break. I think I remember reading that as well before.

Re: Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

I searched that link, and did not find anything about JKRowling saying what the teachers do.  That web site is like Wikipedia...anyone can write anything on it, or edit it to say what they want.  I think the question is still up in the air.

In my new opinion (having read the previous really great ones) - I think they are all out making movies during their summer months:smileyvery-happy:.  That's why we see them everywhere.  They are not normally actors and actresses, it's their second job and in real life they are professors at Hogwarts!!!

Re: Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

I don't recall JKR saying anything in interviews about what the teachers do in the summer, but she did say that some of them were married.  She failed to identify them, though.

I know what Professor Binns does during the summer... he continues his daily lectures, unperturbed by the fact that there are no students listening to him!

Re: Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

Okay, let me restate. I am fine with my inference based on a silly wiki (why on earth anyone would edit that particular section with false info is beyond me - I mean why not go for some other idea) that most professors visit their homes and families during the summer. I mean it has common sense behind it. I would also infer that with each passing year since Harry enrolled at Hogwarts, professors, or at least the major professors, would spend more time back at school in summer making sure all was well and secure for all students. But being a teacher myself, I know would want to spend some time at home or abroad to stay up on things and recharge. At the very least I would invest in a time turner to be able to do so. :-)

You guys will believe what you will. However, if it doesn't come straight from Rowling herself, my heart is not broken.

Re: Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

Hi Star!  Long time no see.

I don't know, I rather cherish the image of Snape doing the Saturday Night Fever strut to Stayin' Alive-complete with shirt open to the waist and loads of gold chains.:smileyhappy:  It's fun to imagine the Hogwarts staff doing things which are completely out of character.  I expect that Prof. Sinistra goes spelunking, and that Madam Pince is a pole dancer.

Re: Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

Sorry, Kreacherteacher, didn't mean to offend you.  Just meant that since there's no proof either way, it was fun to think up weird stuff they might do on their breaks.  I teach too, but my summer breaks are sooooo boring.  It would be nice to have an alternate life, but just can't afford it.

Re: Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

i like to think that teachers have an exotic and glamorous life outside hogwarts. the madam pince as a pole dancer put a really scary image in my head, but funny nonetheless. it would be exciting, though, to travel after being in the castle all year.

Re: Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

No worries, Par.  I don't mean to sound so defensive. My plan is to goad Psychee into an admission that she is J.K. Rowling. One of these days I will get it.

She will say something to the effect of, "How dare you argue with me! Do you not realize who I am?! I am J.K. Rowling herself and my words shall echo in the cyber halls of Barnes and Noble forever as THE definitive word to the world of Harry Potter, and don't you ever forget it!"

Well it will be something like that. :-)

Re: Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

[ Edited ]

And I forgot to add that I will then tell her that I will forever admire her creative talent and knowledge of her fantasy world, and I shall humbly bow down before her, as best I can on the internet, to indicate my place in this meager little square on this earth that I have been given by presumably the same God.

Disclaimer: That last part about God was idle silliness and in no way should suffice as an indication to how I truly feel about God, though I do wonder if someone could spare a square from time to time. And how many prepositions are acceptable in a sentence?

ha!  Good luck with that. You'd have more success if you waited for Godot instead!  :smileyhappy:

Re: Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

She is the ultimate authority on this site, isn't she? Only problem is (sorry Psychee, but it's true) she scares me from posting sometimes, because I know if my facts aren't just so, she'll be quick to point it out.

Psychee --- are you sure you're not a teacher?  You certainly could teach a college course on Harry Potter.

Re: Hogwarts Teachers: What happens during the summer?

Psychee would never want to intimidate anyone from posting. Though I cannot speak for her, from what I have seen, she questions almost as much as she answers. Okay, it is probably more lopsided - like 5% questions to 95% answers, but my point is to not be intimidated.

The only time Psychee wouldn't want to post is if you were mentally affected by your posts or someone else's posts. For example, if you have to pick up your keyboard, hold it over your head, and turn around five times every time someone writes the word "Slytherin", then you may be affected mentally.

I'm just sayin'...that's kinda weird, you know? I think she would find that unhealthy, and she would want you to get some help.
