J.K Rowling Replied!

I wrote a letter to J.K Rowling. We were waiting about 2 and a half months but finally a reply came sent to me and my friend! It wasn't a personal letter but it was really nice and she was saying how she thought her life would be a little more serene after she published Beedle the Bard but it was still as busy as ever, so she was sorry but she couldn't send individual replies. I don't have the letter right now - my friend has it - but when I get it, if you like I can tell you word for word what it says.

I wrote the letter to her publishers in New York. I heard that if you send it to her publishers in the United Kingdom she acually replies with a personal letter! I'm working on trying to send my letter there. I'll let you know when she replies to that.

So if you are thinking of writing to JKR it is really nice to get the letter personal or not personal. Her signature was at the bottom but I don't know if it was signed or copied. Still, it had our names on it!

That is so cool!    I really appreciate an author who appreciates her fans that much that she answers their letters.  What did your letter say?

That's fantastic, Ale! It's a great feeling to be recognized by a person you look up to and admire. I am happy she recognizes her fan base in some form espcially considering she is one of the most famous authors living, if not the most famous.

Re: J.K Rowling Replied!

here's what it says:

                           Dear Friend,

Thank you so much for your letter. I wish I could answer personally, but I receive so much mail these days that it is impossible. I do hope you understand.

I thought that life would be a little more serene once I had published Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but in fact, it has been as busy as ever! I loved writing The Tales of Beedle the Bard, along with Professor Dumbledore's commentary (all royalties to be donated to the Children's High Level Group, which campaigns on behalf of all institutionalized children, mostly in Eastern Europe). I particularly liked writing as Dumbledore again; he is a character who is hard to get out of my system (not that I would ever want him to leave for good).

I have no immediate plans to publish anything else, though that does not mean I am not writing; I have to write to feel sane! I am enjoying a temporary respite from deadlines, but at the same time, I am lucky enough to have an ongoing connection with the world of Harry Potter through the films.

I shall always be grateful and humbled by the loyalty of Harry's fans through his long journey, and the letters I continue to recieve remind me, as nothing else can, how very lucky I have been in my readers.

                                                     With very best wishes,

                                                                                           J. K. Rowling

Re: J.K Rowling Replied!

It's a bit embarrassing but I asked her politely to sign one of my books. It cost me $12 for international shipping. That means that she has to pay $12 ( or whatever's worth $12 over there) to ship it back.

Re: J.K Rowling Replied!

Oh dear.  I wonder what her publisher is going to do with that book when it arrives!    It may actually cost her a whole lot more to send the book back to you than it cost you to send the book from here.

I hope she responds the way you expect, Alejandro.

Re: J.K Rowling Replied!

I suppose it is possible that they might send it back to you C.O.D., and you might have to pay customs duties and insurance costs as well.

Still, you may get a learning experience out of it, and that is a priceless thing.

Just so you know in the future, if you send something to someone who did not request it they are not legally obligated to send it back to you.   And if you ever again send something overseas with the expectation of a reply, you need to include enough International Reply Coupons to cover the cost of the reply.   You can buy IRCs at your local post office.

You probably ought to talk to your parents about this and have them consider with you the idea of sending a separate letter explaining your mistake and including the necessary IRC's for getting the book back.   With the thousands of letters that JKR receives, though, you would be taking a risk that your package and your new letter might not get connected.   It would be far cheaper to just buy another book, but this is something that your parents can help you decide.

Actually, I have a collectors edition of the same book! I just sent that my other one because I had a feeling that THIS  was going to happen.

Good thing I thought ahead! Can you imagine if I sent that $70 Collectors edition?

Why does this kind of thing always happen to me?

Re: J.K Rowling Replied!

I don't know what other things have happened to you, but I think you can attribute this one to your youthful enthusiasm.  That's not a bad thing.

Next time you have an impulse to do something "risky", it might help to force yourself to wait a few days while you talk about it with others and think about all the things that could wrong and how you could prevent them.

Easier said than done, though, I'm afaid, when you are young.  :smileyhappy:

But good planning on your part to not send the more expensive book!

Re: J.K Rowling Replied!

It's interesting to see how these innocent situations can mushroom..

I would think that the publisher, however, would send a letter  explaining that, alas,  JKR couldn't sign books under these conditions and explain the options and costs if Alejandro wanted the book returned.   That way, he wouldn't be under obligation.  Then, if he didn't want to go thru the expense, I would think that they would donate the book to a library, school, etc, where it would do the most good.  Of course, if they returned the book unsigned, which I'm afraid they would,  I would think that he would be under no more obligation to pay any charges than the publisher would have been to accept delivery in the first place.  But I doubt the publisher would do that; the British are known for their good manners.

Double "of course", if she did autograph it -- well, it would certainly be worth the expense!!!!:smileysurprised:!!!!

Psychee, thanks for the info on how to handle sending materials overseas.  I'm always suprised at what the Post Office can do.

Alejandro, e'thing will be cool.  It's just that some simple things can get so complicated..I'm sure they get all sorts of requests from folks and yours wasn't the most unusual of them.:smileyhappy:

Thanks for that. I guess that the reason I prefer this book club rather than any other is because everyone is so helpful! :smileywink:

Aw. Amen to that, Alejandro!  People in our Harry Potter Book Club are very helpful, indeed.

One thing you *could* have done is to enclose a self-addressed envelope big enough to hold the book (like a padded envelope) and enough IRCs (International Reply Coupons, as Psychee says) to cover the return shipping cost.  Even then, though, I don't know that you would receive your book back signed.  Popular authors aren't always able to do this simply because they receive so many requests.  Authors/publishers of books for young people sometimes take the tender ages of their audience into account, though, and have some kind of accommodations made for the way you sent your request, so you never know.  The letter you received was much easier for them.  It probably was a form letter with a printed signature (sorry to say, but you mentioned that you surmised as much).  Those are fairly easy for publishers to send back as replies from authors.

Do let us know what happens, A.  It might take quite some time for you to get something back from the U.K., if you receive anything at all.  I do hope you get something and have not lost your book!

Re: J.K Rowling Replied!

It says that she won't sign the books sent to her, that she no longer even gets to see the books sent to her, but that they are returned to the sender, right?   Does that give you the hope that they will at least send the book back to you, Alejandro?
