Re: Tiny questions that don't matter but I'm asking anyway

Maybe more would understand if I included background sound effects of typewriters and Telexes in my posts.  :smileyhappy:

(But if anyone doesn't understand and wants to know, just ask)

Now a question -- did JKR herself say that Harry's death was to be the horcrux?  I remember that that was Dumbledore's speculation.    I wish there was a list of everything she said -- maybe that could be her #1 proroity for the Scottish Book (HP Encyclopedia) and she could release it in chapters.  Get that Jo?  LoL

Oh, Jules.  Have I got a nice surprise for you!  There already exists a pretty comprehensive compendium of things JKR has said in interviews.   It is a labor of love by fans, and it is called Accio Quote!  You should check it out -- there's a LOT of good stuff there.

I refer to it quite often when I'm researching stuff for the board.

And, just in case you don't know about this resource, either, it is called The Lexicon and it covers the HP world in encyclopedia format.

Re: Tiny questions that don't matter but I'm asking anyway

Thank you!!!!  I didn't know it was still around.  Had a bad crash and lost so many links a while back.

Whilewe're on the subject of broken wands -- what about Hagrid's?  I always wondered why Dumledore never went to the Ministry and had Hagrid's name cleared and his wand repaired.  Then Hagrid would have been free to do the magic he could and learn more.  We know the Elder Wand was capable of repairing wands, and if there was enchantment saying a criminal's wand ( misbehaving student's) couldn't repaired, setting the record straight should take care of that.

Dumbledore went to the trouble of trying to clear Morfin's name.  (And, if there is any justice in the Wizarding World, why  didn't the Wizengamot continue their deliberations even tho Morfin had died.  It was too late to release him from Askaban, but they could have set that record straight.  DD was Chief Warlock, after all.)

It was so sad, watching Hagrid trying to put out his burning hut with his umbrella.

Sirius' name should have been cleared too.

Re: Tiny questions that don't matter but I'm asking anyway

[ Edited ]

Hagrid's name was cleared at the point where he was taken out of Azkaban.  But his wand was never repaired.

I don't think there was any kind of enchantment keeping that from happening, though.  I think people just believed that there was no way to fix a broken wand.

I must admit, that after Harry fixed his own wand, I wanted him to fix Hagrid's, too, before returning the wand to Dumbledore's coffin.

Maybe he did and we just didn't get to hear about it???  That is a nice thought....

But as to why Dumbledore didn't fix it himself, I don't know.  Maybe he just never thought it was possible to fix -- Harry got the idea to use the Elder Wand because he was desperate to get his own wand back and refused to leave any stone unturned.  Dumbledore didn't have the same degree of motivation, as Hagrid never complained about his wand, as far as we know.

Wait a minute... come to think about it, how do we know that Hagrid's wand was never fixed?  It was always kept inside the umbrella.

Re: Tiny questions that don't matter but I'm asking anyway

If i remember correctly, we were told it was broken and assumed that the pieces were in the umbrella.  Did Olivander make a comment about it too?  Asking of Hagrid still had the pieces???-- at the Weighing of the Wands????  But, if they didn't fix it, they should have at least relpaced it.

Unless, the umbrella was/is really the wand!!!!!

Re: Tiny questions that don't matter but I'm asking anyway

I was thinking that Dumbledore might have actually secretly fixed the wand but told Hagrid to always keep it inside the trunk of the umbrella, lest someone from the Ministry make a big deal about it.   Sort of like what he did by re-naming Buckbeak Witherwings.

Re: Tiny questions that don't matter but I'm asking anyway

Wouldn't Hagrid, even after his wand was broken, still have had the Trace on him until he turned 17?  Or does breaking a wizards wand mean that the Trace is removed too?  I don't see why it would, though.  Even if a wizard's wand is broken, they can still presumably do spontaneous magic without a wand.

I guess since Hagrid was living at Hogwarts, it would be impossible for the Ministry to tell if he was doing magic, with a wand or without one-too much magic in the air to determine who was doing it.

Re: Tiny questions that don't matter but I'm asking anyway

I don't think the trace is related to the wand.  Harry got in trouble the first time for something Dobby did and the second time for something that happened spontaneously, blowing up his aunt (not that he actually got in trouble for that -- I just think the Trace had cued the Ministry in on the problem there ).

But I also don't think the Trace works at Hogwarts, since underage wizards are freely allowed to use magic while there.

Speaking of the Weighing of the Wands, I wonder why Olivander used the spells he did?

The orchids made sense for Fleur (her name meaning flower) and the birds made sense for Krum, I guess because he like to fly, and I forgot what it was for Cedric, but why the fountain wine for Harry?

Why didn't Trevor the toad have a carrying case?  And what happened to him after Neville got his Mimbulus Mimbletonia?

Re: Tiny questions that don't matter but I'm asking anyway

ok I have a new question:

in the DH, how did Ron know about where Bill lived? Because it seems like Harry and Hermione don't know about it until he comes back and tells them where he was. And if he do know before they left why hadn't he told them before, they tell each other everything.

Are you asking how Ron knew to go there when he left Harry and Hermione?  Real good question! I imagine that he hid out near the Burrow at first, afraid to go in, and caught Bill when he visited there.   Alternatively, and riskier, would be for him to disguise himself and hang out near Gringotts until he caught his brother emerging from there.

He might have also overheard some conversations about where Bill was going to live before the marriage, and then went to find the place with the few details he had.  The problem with that, though, is that he was not in on "the secret", so it would have been impossible for him to actually see the place without Bill actually leading him there.

Re: Tiny questions that don't matter but I'm asking anyway

I'd say that Ron knew where Bill and fleur lived because they were family, and just because one of them got married does not mean that he moved away and never told his family where they were living.  After all, if JKR wrote every little thing, it would haven taken a trailer to bring the books home from B&N, and taken time from reading to return it to the rental place the next day!

So, OOTP, Harry gets back to school and sees Thestrals on the way up to Hogwarts.   And I'm sure the answer that it has to do with how she wanted to present it, however, why didn't Harry see the Thestrals at the end of GOF on his way down to Hogsmeade to catch the train home?

Re: Tiny questions that don't matter but I'm asking anyway

Readers asked JKR this question and she replied that it took awhile for the death of Cedric to "sink in", therefore he couldn't see the Thestrals until the beginning of the new school year.  But she acknowledged that from a writer's perspective she found it impossible to introduce the Thestrals so late in GOF and therefore had to come up with a good explanation for the delay.

Near the end of HBP, Mundungus Fletcher is put in Azkaban for having impersonated an Inferius.  Yet, in DH, he was no longer in prison.  How did he get out?

The crime was probably just a "mis-dementor".  Really sorry about that.

Dung was always into petty stuff, impersonating an inferius would probably just rank with selling stolen goods. So I guess he just got a short sentence for a minor crime.
