When you enter into the world of Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series you enter into a world that is bold and vibrant and that is neither easy nor predictable. This is an exciting series, and the first three books have been wondrous, exhilarating and some of the best story telling I’ve read. With a full, rich and unique mythology, and characters that are well developed, distinct and exceptional, I’m captivated.
In Archangel's Consort, the third book in the Guild Hunter Series, our heroine Elena has returned to New York as both an angel and a vampire hunter. Belonging to the immortal world of angels, with all the attendant trappings and privileges that implies is a slippery slope to traverse and she finds herself having to take baby steps as she discovers how to be an angel. This includes not only learning how to fly but also learning how to deal with her new status in the world. As an immortal and as the consort of one of the most powerful Archangels in the world she needs to find a way to embrace this new life while staying true to herself.
Raphael, Elena’s lover and the Archangel of New York, is also in a precarious position. Raphael is an alpha hero with NO apologies. He has lived for centuries, his word is absolute and his command is unquestioned; yet he must be ever vigilant in protecting his power, his people and his consort. The world he lives in is all about the balance of this power, and when you factor in the other venerable Archangels who are not the least bit trustworthy, due to their thirst for control and supremacy, you have the makings of an explosive situation. The politics of power are ever present and Elena is new to the game. Jealousy and danger surround her, but her ability to stay level headed and grounded, to think in the most harrowing of situations, to be brave, courageous and loyal, serve her in good stead. She’s the kind of heroine that while she has her foibles, also has a sense of humor, a conscious and a quick mind, and most of all she can give and feel love and is thankful for it. She’s a rare breed of heroine and one you want to stand up and applaud for. Together Elena and Raphael are explosive, exciting and extraordinary. They love each other with a great passion and ferocity as they learn the intricate dance of give and take.
When an ancient Archangel who happens to be one of the most powerful Archangels that ever lived begins to create havoc on the world, the balance of power is in immediate and perilous danger. That she also happens to be Raphael’s mother makes the danger tenfold. With Elena by his side Raphael must face his mother and make a decision that may change the very fabric of the world.
With each book in this series we get another look at how Elena and Raphael deal with the perils of his position and the world they live in. With Archangels ruling the world, rogue vampires, vampire hunters and of course humans, it’s a complex world with a clear hierarchy, and Ms. Singh makes it all work with a clever orchestration of the right notes that are sometimes subtle and at other times dynamic, but always harmonious in the beauty of the story telling.
If you've yet to read this series start with the first two books, Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter Series #1) and Archangel's Kiss (Guild Hunter Series #2), and enter into a world that will surprise your imagination.
