I started out reading fantasy and sci-fi.  I never knew I would love a romance book until I got a freebie.  Now I read them more and more often.  I am getting a bit spoiled by love and happy endings, but as long as a fantasy/ sci-fi story doesn't have too bleak of a plot then I can usually step away from the romances.

I read fantasy/sci-fi, but also thrillers and mysteries. I do prefer the story to have some romance in it, but can enjoy the book without it as well. It helps to have a "palate cleanser" book every now and then to keep things fresh. After reading too many romance novels I tend to need something to mix it up so I can go back to the romance genre fresh and "in love" with love again.

Great article Melanie, well I read a LOT of romances a month and the number just went up too :smileyhappy:

but then love makes the world go round and i never really need a "break" from romance, but I'm a genre-hopper anyway I love hard fantasy, adult fairy tales, si-fi, thrillers and mysteris too and once in a great while I'll find a non-fiction I can stomache :smileyhappy:

But it's true what you said above that when you take a break from romance a love story just comes up and hits you on the head

my perfect example of this is Overseas by Beatriz Williams

I started out reading mysteries, but eventually realized many of my favorites (Mary Stewart's books, for instance) featured a romance. Now I'm a hardcore fan of both mystery AND romance - and, like you, I especially like books with a touch of magic. When it comes to best sellers, if there's no romance, no happy ending? Not for me.

I'll still read mysteries that don't include a romantic storyline, but the ones on my keeper shelf almost always have a little of both.

I generally read mysteries (historical ones) when I am not reading romances. But even those often have some aspect of romance to them (I like the Deanna Raybourn and Tasha Alexander mysteries). I recently branched out into a contemporary thriller (Chris Pavone's The Expats--I really liked it). Other than that, I read science fiction or fantasy. I have Connie Willis' Blackout sitting nearby and Naomi Novik's latest Temeraire novel waiting for me. Hope to get to them soon. I keep finding books at the library that I want to read first.
