Lhate to the Pahrty

Some of us take longer to catch on than others, and many might accuse me of being queen of th' aforementioned "some."
For instance, first time a friend told me a series 'bout a band of studly vampire warriors would be the Next Big Thang, I agreed to check 'em out, then closed the first tome at chap 2, unable to take another mohment of extrhaneous Hs.
Upon second reading, I got over that qhuirk - and m'self - and for some time became addicted like much of the romance-loving free world to the Black Dagger Brotherhood.
Never one to learn from my mistakes when mortification borne of repeated blunders might be enjoyed, I also failed to jump on board in a timely manner the bandwagons hitched to the bright stars of Jaci Burton's Wild Riders, Sabrina Jeffries' Royal Brotherhood of Bastards and, oy, my greatest humiliation, Suz Brockmann's Troubleshooters to name just a few among the myriad times I've been late to the party.
Recently, H2H viewer Princess Bumblebee's comments here and at Unabashedly Bookish reminded me I probably, um, mislaid my invitation - yeah, that's it! -- to one of the hottest bright-star events in the romantic-suspense series universe that's been going on for, well, a couple years. That'd be the supernova that is Tara Janzen and her Loose series.
Janzen's rom susps have everything a girl could want: hot government operatives who love sleek rides and who also have heroic-yet-varied pasts; don't-wanna-be-on-the-wrong-end-of-her-weapon-in-a-firefight heroines who're as vulnerable as they're sexy (just, you know, not until the firefight's over); well-written tales of intrigue, spy vs. spy change-ups and thrilling, hang-on-for-dear-life action. All of these things - plus the ultra sexy emotional push/pull Janzen sets up between her heroes/heroines - make the reader breathless with anticipation for the next bits of danger and adventure, and subsequent books in the series.
In Janzen's newest, "Breaking Loose," a the possibility of scoring immortality lures super-bad guys toward a supposedly magic ancient artifact, one that the U.S. government has sent sultry sometimes-operative-and-arts/antiquities-expert Suzi Toussi to Ciudad del Este, the evil armpit of humanity, to make a grab for.
Suzi's got reasons to make the quick take including using the money she'll receive to fund her side gig of saving women from "white" slavery. Yet Suzi doesn't count on the job going to crap from jump, or reluctantly being rescued by Dax Killian, the hottie-secret-agent-guy type she stood up months ago, but whom she's not forgotten.
Yet Dax knows Suzi doesn't trust him, and for good reason; if she found out whose team he's on, she could blow his cover, his game and his chances for saving the free world - even if he's kind of going around the bad-guy block to get next door. Still, a man could give up a lot for a woman as hot as Suzi, especially after she stood him up, and all...
Most folks say, "Learn from your mistakes." I suggest it's always easier, and less work, to learn from others'. Consider mine a cautionary tale: Friends don't let friends miss out on great reads.
What are the great books you missed out on, then got hooked on when you finally gave 'em a shot? What do you love about Tara Janzen's reads? What do you dig about spy vs. spy romances?

I'm ALWAYS late to the partay. Still haven't made it through all of the BDB, and The Royal Brotherhood Of Bastards? How did I miss that? There are TONS of series I've missed, really. So I'm leaving it to you and trhe Bellas to remind me.

There's probably a bazillion books I've missed out on because of the cover, the title or heck even if it was a blue day for me and the darn book was in green. But I tend to learn from my mistakes and give em a try later. Troubleshooters and BDB are both series that I passed over at one time but then JUMPED on the bandwagon before they were too far out of the shoot.
I'm afraid I haven't read Tara yet, oh my aching TBR pile, but Linda Howard had a great mini series about black ops CIA operatives that was really out there and really good. I think the main thing I like about spy romances is the adrenalin rush that comes with it, plus the love scenes are usually a little more x rated in these types of reads I guess because of the kind of business these people are in. You know you snooze you die sort of thing.
But Tara I will be trying out the series. looks intense. Just the way I like my romance. On the sizzle burner.

I've read most (but not all) of the series you were late in discovering, but my biggest hold-out is Twilight. I know I'll read it eventually -- just not yet. And, oh yeah, Diana Gaboldon's Outlander series. Now I suspect I'm going to love that series, so I've bought all the books but I'm waiting until I have a free week or two before I dive into them.
As to Tara Janzen -- wow! I know a lot of H2H readers are fans of Roxanne St. Claire, and Tara's stories have a similar heat level, pace and intensity. I went on a mad Janzen binge about a month ago, but I still have a couple left to read. I'm rationing them because they are soooo good!

Hi Michelle!
I'm late to the party too! But, you can bet that when I get fully into it, I'm going to partay and read all those books that I missed. I've started with the Black Dagger Brotherhood and have read six of those and loved them. So it's onward and upward as I work on my TBR pile that has ballooned beyond belief! ![]()

Hi, all! Sorry I've been mia for the last week, recooping from a little nothing surgery. But you know how it is when even hanging on line makes you tired? Anyways, I'll totally cop to being behind the times on some big books, much as I love to snatch a run on a book and break the news occasionally; I mean, who wouldn't, right?
Eva, you're in good company w/those of us happy to admit that we're not always quick onthe uptake w/this stuff. It's one of those things where you're cool by being uncool, least that's what I tell myself. recently I heard this rocker say he's refusing to get tats to make the not getting cool (his band happens to own a bunch of hip tat shops, btw). Anywayz, I rely on folks to tell me about books, cause there's just no way to stay on top of everything great coming out. no matter how big your staff, or how many reader friends you have, stuff slips. or maybe i'm just a mess. The RBB are illegitimate sons of Prinny, a trio of historicals which I really loved. You can't go wrong with a Prinny riff and, yeah, there are carriage scenes...

hey, deb. Your point about covers and flat-out subjectivity was one I was pondering as I wrote this: What makes us take a look at a read? And what gives us an inkling it's going to be 'big.' I'll have to check out the HOward, too. And yeah, that whole "emergency sex" aspect is cool in the spy/spy book. Plus the pairing of strong/strong h/hn. My empathies toyour TBR.
becke, were you just getting a little sa-mug? Sheesh. Let us know when you start the Gabaldon so's we know not to expect you around for a couple weeks... I like the Janzen because she never lets us forget about the h/hn, despite the fact that the 'suspensful'-story stakes are so high. You're the rom susp expert, and I know we have this discussion a lot, but for me, the rom susp needs to be more about the rom to be a, well, satisfying rom. Janzen makes that happen. I love how knocked out this hero is by this hn.

ooo, that's right, 1la. And I've been living vicariously through your experiencing the BDB for the first time. Lucky girl. Better late than never for us, no?
Hiya, Anne! "Breaking Loose" is the 4th in the Loose series, which is 10th in the overall Steele Street series. The Loose books are kind of a sub-series, mostly delineated by title. Another Loose book's due in '10. And I'm still laughing about your TBR's little sister. I can only imagine the sibling rivalry over whose books get read first...

AnneB - you can't go wrong with Linda Howard. I love all her books, and I think you'll like them, too. You should also check out Roxanne St. Claire if you like romantic suspense. Shannon K. Butcher and Shannon McKenna are also good romantic suspense authors.
I'm so frustrated. I've been down with the flu, and I hoped the upside of being sick would be tons of time to read. Unfortunately, fever = dizzy, so I've totally wasted this time. I'm eager to get back on track!
Michelle -- I'm with you on liking lots of romance in my romantic suspense, and plenty of heat, too. I do like regular mysteries, too, so I'm happy with romantic suspense that's heavy on mystery and lighter on romance as long as I know what to expect.

Hi Anne and everyone, Becke I know you're recovering from the flu so I hope you're feeling better and Michelle take care of yourself and let that hunk of your take care of you until you're back in the pink.
The black ops CIA series from Linda Howard was
Kill and Tell 1998
All the Queens Men 1999
Kiss Me While I Sleep 2004
If I missed any I'm sorry but she doesn't have a dedicated web-site so I picked this up from Wickipedia (what would we do without it)

I've been at both ends, early and late ![]()
I'm still late to the BDB series... haven't started them yet, yikes.
I was late with Linda Howard and Diana Palmer... but I blame it on the fact that I was too young when they started, lol. It's been a slow process, but I have most of Diana Palmer's backlist, and am working on Linda Howard's ![]()
Now with authors like Maya Banks and Beth Williamson, I've read them since the beginning and definitely recommend to friends ![]()

Hi everybody - Tara Janzen here - muchas gracias to Michelle for letting me know about the BREAKING LOOSE party over here :-) I've been years and years behind on a few series, most noticeably in that I just read my first J.D. Robb, started right at the beginning with Naked in Death, and yeah, it only took me a few hours to scrrreeeeeam through that one :-) Loved it! Michelle is right about the LOOSE series being a continuation of the CRAZY series, with the whole shebang starting with CRAZY HOT. There are ten books out about the chop shop boys of Steele Street, with the next one, LOOSE ENDS, coming out next year. Readers and I are fantasy casting movies over on my facebook fan page - got a hothothot pic of Hugh Jackman a reader sent in, thinking of using it as a screen saver :-) Come on over and take a peek (have oxygen handy :-) I love C. Gerard's Bodyguards and her BOI's, and Suz B - but have gotten a little behind in both of those series. Happy Reading to all ya'll

Oh, welcome, Tara! I just love your books, as already mentioned, hehe. Keep up the good work!
Becke and Michelle, glad to see you're doing better! And, Michelle, I didn't realize I was such an influence on you. (evil cackling)
I'm with you. Ms. Janzen just has a way with her stories. They're suspenseful, the hero and heroine are ALWAYS strong and can get the job done, but never annoyingly bossy, and she never detracts from the HEA and romance. Gotta love it! And those roaring muscle cars!

Hi Everyone - AnneB here - Wow, I go offline for a few hours and a party happens !!!!! Tara, I just ordered the first book of the series - I can't wait to read it. I've gotten some really good suggestions here at BN Book Clubs. Becke - hope you are feeling better. I'm really looking forward to hearing how you like the Gabaldon books. Deb - Thanks for the Linda Howard info. Michelle - I was just in the bookstore "Whose Name Shall Not Be Uttered" and I picked up Lakeshore Christmas. I can't wait to read it....

Hi Tara - Glad to see you here! I think my favorite of yours is probably Skeeter and Dylan's story -- I just love those two. I love them all, though.
Michelle - It doesn't look to me like you're taking it easy. I think we need to send over some cabana boys to do your housework, help the kids with homework and write your blogs. Or maybe they can just provide additional inspiration for them, but don't tell you-know-who I said that!

OK, can I just say that TJ may be one of my new fave peeps? Can't you just pick up on cyber energy sometimes, guys? And principessa, very nice handling of yourself in the presence of greatness. You know, I don't think you ever told us how you came about your name... And yes you are an evil influence, albeit one who has the same taste in music as I.
Anne, do I sense that you may be a series read-in-order-er? I didn't realize that about you, though maybe I should have w/the BDBs... And I offer you total BWSRN absolution. They give us that power when we start here, along with a BN.com tiara or magical toolbelt. Guess which I chose?

Hi, SimplyAli! Nice to have you here! Oh, another BDB novice to live vicarously through. sigh. and it's so cool to get to discover a backlist exists when you find a new or new-to-you author. Like you, I like to remind folks I'm way too young to have jumped on the original bandwagons for some authors. Poe and Austen come to mind...
Ooh, I just started reading Maya Banks. She's only got 2 out, yes?
Gosh, deb, I wonder if Linda H's were some of the first BlackOps, or if there were earlier. Did she start the craze?

Welcome, Tara, and de nada! So kind of you to stop by. Oh, you're brave starting the Robb. I fear the series because, while I don't have to read in order, I'm pretty obsessed with finishing the whole sheband once I start. So I better work through yours first, then consider moving on to Roarke, though I understand he may ruin me for other heroes. Looking forward to '10 and your next Loose book.
Becke, aren't cabana boys just the gift that keeps on giving? You're a good friend. I really need to post a photo of the lovely cabana-boy merman ornament you sent me, the one who so coyly decorates my desk and provides inspiration, while serving mojitos, on a dreary Midwestern day like today...

Hi Everyone!
Michelle & Becke, so glad you're better! It always seems we can read when we're sick, but the fever is the worst part. Hey, Princess missed you and Anne too! Becke you'll love Diana Gabaldon's books. So far, I've read three. Wonderful, wonderful books! To everyone else, welcome, welcome!!! ![]()

Hi Becke and Anne and 1lovealways! and that's a big YES on the cabana boys -- I'll take two -- and please make one of them the guy with the mojitos :-) Also need a cabana. Thanks :-) Anne, since you just ordered CRAZY HOT, write me on my website www.tarajanzen.com and I'll send you an autographed copy of the second book in the series, CRAZY COOL. Thanks Becke for mentioning Skeeter and Dylan, they've got a big part in the next book, LOOSE ENDS, J.T.'s story. And uh, yes, ditto, Michelle on the being waaaay too young to jump on some of those original bandwagons, like maybe Milton and Shakespeare :-)
