Sorry, Maria; move over, Claudia; forgive me, Lily; but my new BFF is my brand new NOOK and I’ve named her ‘girlfriend’.
I started reading eBooks back when I was still using a dial-up connection to get internet service and my computer screen was so big I needed a separate room just to house it. With eBooks I discovered many new authors, like Deidre Knight, Lora Leigh, and Jaci Burton, just to name a few. It was great. The one drawback was that I could only read these books while I sat at my desk. I couldn’t read them while I was waiting on line at the grocery store, or while I was commuting to work, or in bed, or at the beach, or ANYWHERE, except at my desk in my home. Pure torture. However, there were so many new authors I wanted to discover and read that I kept buying eBooks even though it meant being chained to my desk in order to read them.
Then, hallelujah—and can I get an amen?—they invented the eReader. I sure did covet those slim, sleek, portable bookstores/libraries in a bag; and I talked about them non-stop. Maria, my BFF (at the time), told me to stop pressing my nose against the window and buy one already. It was only recently, when Barnes & Noble came out with the NOOK Wi-Fi that I thought, OK, this could be a reality in my life. I could actually be the owner of an eReader. So that very day I called Maria and said "I’m thinking of heading over to Barnes & Noble and looking at the new NOOK Wi-Fi. Just looking, mind you. I just want to hold it in my hands and see what it feels like.” So, off I went to my local Barnes and Noble store, just to look—and the rest is history. I held one in my hands and my reading life was changed forever.
I’m in love. How can I explain this so you really get it? Reading on the Nook is a unique and wonderful experience. I know I sound like I’m doing an advertisement, but the truth of the matter is I feel as if I’ve discovered a whole new way to read. With so many books at the ready, it doesn’t matter what I’m in the mood for because I’m not limited to the 3 or 6 books I used to carry around in my ginormous hand bag—said huge handbag expressly purchased just to be able to house those 3 to 6 books I carried around with me everywhere. Now, if I feel like reading a romantic suspense? Yep, I’ve got that. Or maybe I’m in the mood for the latest Christine Feehan—no worries. Perhaps I'm thinking I’d like to read the new Lisa Kleypas? Again, no problem, because I’ve got them all in my handy dandy, brand spanking new NOOK. Feel like reading while I’m eating? No fuss, no muss, no ketchup on the pages, just lean it against a salt shaker and I’m eating and reading; I’m a true multi-tasker. Perhaps I’d like to read lying down on my left side, instead of my right. Not an issue. Holding on to a subway strap on the #6 train going to work? Pshaw—a baby could do it. Traveling to visit friends or going on vacation? No more limits on the amount of books I can take. I can take them all. I feel like Alice peering through the looking glass, a brand new world has opened up and I’m having more fun than I thought possible.
Now I take my new BFF (aka, ‘girlfriend’) everywhere, and I’m trying to convince Maria (you know, my other BFF) to buy one so we can lend each other books.
Until next Monday, remember there’s always a book waiting to be read, or in my case about 50 on my brand new NOOK…decisions, decisions.
I’m curious, are any of you e-readers? Did you discover any of your favorite authors on eBooks? If you have an eReader what’s your favorite thing about it? Or are you all about holding a ‘real’ book and feeling the pages between your fingers?
