I can remember like it was yesterday.
Although I consider myself somewhat of a risk taker, I must admit, I was nervous that first time. After all it was a new experience and I didn’t know what to expect. But I took the risk and it paid off; actually it more than paid off, it got me addicted. Now I’ve become of those people who can’t seem to stop, and like Oliver, I wait with hope, always saying, ‘more please, more’.
Flashback:
Several years ago on one of my monthly trips to my local Barnes and Noble Store, which happens to be one of those HUGE mega stores with a really big romance section, I was stocking up on that month’s new releases. Like Carrie and her shoes, books are my thing, and with my lovely B&N gift certificate in hand, the stocking up was sweet. After putting all the books on my list in my handy dandy carry all, I realized I had $8 left on my card. To me the extra “free” money meant I could buy a new author. So I pranced down the isles – yes I prance when buying books, the excitement brings out the inner child in me - until a shinny and attractive red and black cover caught my eye. I usually NEVER buy books by their cover but this one called out to me. I read the back cover blurb and said “hmm, why not?” and chucked it with my other purchases.
It took me two weeks to get to that book and when I did it was one of those existential reading moments where time stops and one becomes immersed in a fantastical world that looms larger than one’s own life. Sounds a bit extreme – but you know what I’m talking about; the kind of reading experience where you stay up to 2 o’clock in the morning even though you have to get up in a few hours to go to work. And so began my addiction to the Black Dagger Brotherhood.
Present Day:
Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood Series #1) was my first, and it will always be special to me because, well, we always remember our first. Now, with the reissue of Dark Lover from paperback to the collector’s hardcover edition I’m reminded of why I fell in love with the series. It brings back all the good times, of being introduced to and getting to know Beth and Wrath, Zadist, Phury, Rhage, Butch, Vishous, Thor and John Matthews. The Black Dagger Brotherhood is a series I can’t seem to get enough of. The story arcs, character development and relationships hooked me in from the first. The language, pop culture references, irreverence, wit, action and complex/complicated but loving relationships captured my attention. Wanting to know what happens to each of the brothers and the other assorted cast of characters has become my yearly obsession. And so once a year when the new installment is released I turn off the phone and clear my calendar for a day or two of visiting upstate New York and the vampires known as the Black Dagger Brotherhood.
I’m curious – are you a fan of BDB? Do you remember your first time?
