Ruthless Game, the ninth book in Christine Feehan’s GhostWalker series, is filled with high octane suspense, friendship, loyalty, and love. With hostage rescues, drug cartels, a redoubtable and loyal group of fellow GhostWalkers, a courageous and loving hero and a heroine who can shoot an Uzi with the best of them and also happens to be pregnant, well, you have the makings of hold-on-to your seats, exciting romantic suspense. I have to say I don’t usually enjoy books where the heroine is pregnant, but this one broke through all of my prejudices and was one of my favorite books of the series.
When Kane Cannon is sent to Mexico with his fellow GhostWalkers to rescue hostages, he never anticipated finding Rose Patterson. Rose. The one woman he cannot forget. They were both part of Dr. Whitney’s GhostWalker program and were forever changed by experiments that made them super warriors with paranormal powers, keen intelligence and superior fighting skills. In Dr. Whitney’s quest to make the most powerful and elite warrior imaginable he started a ‘breeding’ program. Rose and Kane were part of that breeding program and put together in hopes of creating a super warrior. They were together for only one night, never to see each other again, but Kane continued to think of Rose and has spent the last eight months searching for her.
During those eight months Rose has been on the run trying to save herself and her unborn child. Pregnant and alone she never imagined she’d meet Kane in a small Mexican village. When things go to hell in a hand basket during the hostage rescue Kane and Rose are stranded and left to fend for themselves until the GhostWalkers can rescue them. In hiding, both Rose and Kane have to deal with several enemies as well as the immanent birth of their child.
I found Ruthless Game to be a dynamic read on a many levels. I was particularly excited about the birth of Rose and Kane's child and the interplay that created for our protaganists. As I’ve said, I’m not one who gets excited about the ‘pregnant heroine’, but in this case I found the device to be an integral part of the relationship between Kane and Rose, while adding a unique twist to this series that now has an even more intriguing aspect with the birth of this very special child.
One of the highlights for me was getting to re-visit characters from other GhostWalker books. The camaraderie between the men and women of this series is endearing and Feehan hits all the right notes when it comes to this group and how they interact and work together. The relationship between Kane and Rose is both electric and engaging. Kane is as most of the male GhostWalkers are, he walks the fine line of “I am Man – You are Woman”. But Feehan pulls this off with just the right amount of humility coupled with “I would walk through broken glass for the woman I love” in her hero; and with Rose as the heroine, Kane has no choice but to become the man that she needs. Rose a warrior, a woman and now a mother is exciting, brave, vulnerable and equal to the task of saving her new family.
Ruthless Game is a great addition to the GhostWalker series. Its adventurous, suspenseful, exciting and romantic and I’m looking forward to the next chapter in this series.
